The Tribute Gardens A Soldiers Memorial and Its Legacy
It took a community to create the Tribute Garden we all know so well, an iconic gem at the base of Franklin Avenue, unique to Millbrook. But many of those names who lent their efforts in pursuit of this concept have been lost in the dusty pages of history. Join with us as community members Alison Meyer, Lea Cornell and George Whalen III, open these pages to discover the why, the what . . . .as well as the when, who and how of the Garden. And learn how far reaching the Tribute Garden remains today!

Wow. Such great information regarding the paper. My mother, Dede McElhaney, worked here in the late 60's.

If someone passed on at the poor house in the town Washington were would one apply for a copy of a death certificate. I am doing genealogy research and my great grandmother passed on there. I emailed Millbrook with no response. Would the town she is buried in have it? I am working on my DAR membership and need this document.

Hi, I think that if someone dies at the poor house, then you would have to contact the Town of Washington, not the Village of Millbrook.

I always chuckle recalling how Kesey's crew were disappointed at the Millbrook meeting of the tribes. They quickly pronounced Tim's scene "a crypt trip" and vamoosed. ;-)

In 2015, when visiting from Minnesota with friends in Connecticut, we chanced upon this site as we drove through Millbrook, NY and were immediatly fascinated by this very striking building and surrounding campus. On the way back through town we took some time to drive as close as we could to further sight-see what was becoming apparant as a very intriguing set of ruins. In the time since, it's been fun to learn much about what was the Bennet School for Girls. I feel fortunate to have come across it before it was gone and it's unfortunate that the site was not able to be saved. Thank you for preserving it's history!

Millbrook is lucky to have such a committed Historical Society President. Great lecture. His tenacious research style is analogous to a raccoon’s efforts to get into that challenging garbage can.

Very interesting presentation. I was entranced by the abandoned exploration of the beautiful buildings and then looked at old photos of when it was operating. What an amazing place to go to school! Sad that the building was not saved, but glad that you are saving the history.

I've heard that the science center was barely even used, only open for 4-5 years and few classes were held in it even when it was open. Sad story, actually. I've seen pictures of the science center taken in 2013 and 2014 and it was still in remarkably good shape especially given that Halcyon Hall was already suffering major structural collapses by then. I remember as a child living nearby, we had a rock cliff with what we called mammoth footprints, they were huge and remarkable. That was back in the 1970's. When they found the mastodon it came as no surprise to myself and family. There is much history in that stretch of forest.
