(23/40) Sleeping Lotus - Joeb Beving
Going to use this one for my July 100x. It’s not terribly difficult to play, but benefits so much from good articulation, voicing, and dynamics. And it sounds digestible for 21st century ears, being neo-classical, so I’d like to have it in my memorized repertoire! First piece of this composer’s I have heard or played, enjoyed it!

For Robin - I didn't forget, I'm just slow ;) I didn't love any of the transcriptions I found, so I arranged it myself.

From the book “In Recital for the Advancing Pianist, Classical Themes” by FJH Publishing. I have never seen more ff and fff dynamics in a piece! Also, the accidentals in here were nightmarish. I have never circled so many things in a score 😂

Halfway point! Wanted to do something special to mark the occasion, plus getting married. This was hands down the hardest piece I have ever learned in my lifetime. I sang this piece in choir, in college, and was mostly concentrating on the piano part. I learned a little bit while in college, and couldn’t manage to sit and learn the rest for long enough for 10 years. The pandemic gave me the tim...

Nice little lyrical piece. Especially liked the rubato feel at the beginning, marked transitions between passages, and the triplet vs. eight note in the more flowing passages. And who doesn’t love a good rolled chord :)
(18/40) Rains of Castamere - Ramin Djawadi, adapted from an arrangement by atinpiano

Not my best work, but that's okay! lol. I needed some piano time amidst the last-minute wedding planning madness! I found this piece so haunting when I first heard it in Game of Thrones, and I have always wanted to learn it. I have started learning a harder version of this same piece that Patrick Pietschmann arranged to include later on, and might still include it, but it’s too difficult to fit...

I picked this one after doing “The Mystical Mariposa Grove” because of the similar accidentals and departures from the starting key that keep you on your toes! From FJH Publishing’s “Best of In Recital Throughout The Year”, Book 5 Volume One.
(16/40) The Mystical Mariposa Grove - Tom Gerou

The third and final piece of the Yosemite Splendor suite by Tom Gerou. Lots of accidentals & measures hinting at the previous or following key in the circle of fifths. Some hesitation in the middle (and the constant hum of the air conditioner) I’d probably re-record this one if this wasn’t a 40/40 challenge, but happy with it enough for now! Composer’s Note: Mariposa Grove in Yosemite National ...
(15/40) Half Dome Drama - Tom Gerou

The second of 3 pieces in the Yosemite Splendor set. “The hike to the top of Half Dome, 5,000 feet above Yosemite Valley, is a precariously arduous journey.” This one probably could have used another practice session, but since I’m an adult and can move on from things I don’t particularly like, here we are 😉
(14/40) In the Mist of Yosemite Falls - Tom Gerou

Going back to the “pieces about places” thing! This is the first of three pieces by Tom Gerou written with Yosemite National Park in mind, called "Yosemite Splendor". Yosemite Falls is the highest waterfall in Yosemite National Park, dropping a total of 2,425 feet (739 m) from the top of the upper fall to the base of the lower fall. Located in the Sierra Nevada of California, it is a major attr...

This seemed fitting with the eclipse and all :) This is an accompaniment, I remember hearing it back in high school, picking it up, and sorta faking my way through it. Was nice to actually learn it!
(12/40) Oquirrh Mountains Shining - Kevin Olson
Переглядів 1034 місяці тому
Had to do this one after Northern Lights, because of the imagery aspect that goes along with both of them. Composers note: The Oquirrh Mountains rise about the western Salt Lake Valley, not far from where I grew up. The name Oquirrh (pronounced “OAK-er”) comes from the Ute word for “shining” mountains. I will definitely come back to this one to clean it up a little bit, but it’s 40/40 challenge...

Performance/tempo marking is “Shimmering” I had this saved in my “to learn” queue for a while & was so happy that it finally made its way to the top!! I think this has been my favorite to learn so far in this challenge, I felt the title of the piece was absolutely perfectly fitting with the music. I also feel like I need to tighten the screw on my bench 😅 With the octave reaches from the top to...

I played the primo part of this duet probably 15 years ago in a Christmas recital, with a friend playing the secondo part. For piece 3, I recorded the primo part & learned the secondo part. Pressed play on the primo track, hit record, & played the secondo. Hope you enjoy
