Texas Fiber Gathering, Ep. 3: Swiss Valais, part 1
The lovely, cuddly Swiss Valais is misunderstood by many. At first glance you think it’s huggable and fluffy. They are but the fiber is lustrous, wavy and silky to the touch. It’s a pashmina on four legs. As a hand spinner I will always spin for fingering weight. As a mill I would look at my wider audience and focus on sport or dk because the yarns will look heavy but feel light and lustrous. Adding a down breed blend would make a good hiking sock. Or be brazen and and do 100%!! We like to think outside the box. #followthesheepwalk #texasfibergathering #fiberfarmer #fibershed #artisanmill #sheepwool #swissvalaiswool

Dirt to soil using wool, llama beans and minerals
Переглядів 5721 день тому
Our dirt desperately needs more than just a nitrogen injection. While wool can be used for mulch to help with water retention and nitrogen boosts. You will find yourself still getting the same old results without the microbes which also need carbon to help them develop and strengthen your dirt and make soil. We want to reach higher and work towards wards the nutrient and mineral rich ancient so...
Texas Fiber Gathering, Ep. 2: Dorper or not?
Переглядів 68Місяць тому
Believe it or not the most misunderstood breed is the Dorper mainly because it is a meat sheep that produces some wool. But this breed carries wool genetics primarily the horn Dorset so when you cross this breed with a wool breed, you generally get a potluck of Wool types. I don’t recommend crossing again. You might be compromising the quality of the wool at that point. But if your gallery says...
Texas Fiber Gathering, Ep. 1: Crap in, crap out?
Переглядів 192Місяць тому
Texas Fiber Gathering, EP. 1: crap in , crap out? But is it really crap? What I see as gold, others see as straw, but isn’t it my job as your mill to turn straw into gold? And I will own it. If I see that it’s not possible to take it to yarn or I might need to add something to make it sturdier or sexier, then I’m going to tell you so but I’ve dealt with some pretty strange fibers in the last 1...

Fiber Mill Gathering: Chimayo, part 1
Переглядів 463 місяці тому
In the next months I am going to continue to tell the story of the Chimayo weavers through our mill experience. We have sourced Navajo Churro, but it means a lot to me to make this wool accessible once again to our weavers in New Mexico. The cost per pound is based on an upscale market and not realistic for the artists who continue the tradition of the Chimayo style of weaving. I hope you will ...

I am a new subscriber and just wanted to let you know how much I love that you are sharing this information. So many breeds are underrated, and their fleece still has beauty and is useful. As a hand spinner who enjoys working from a fleece, I really appreciate what you are doing. I live in Amarillo, and wish you were closer so I could visit. That said, I am happy to know there is a fiber mill in Texas. Blessings and keep sharing the love of sheep.

Thank you for the feedback because I really love wool. Other fiber types too but I’ve realized over the years that each fleece has its own story. Now that we are past the first freeze I can fire up the washer and get to part 2 of the Valais.

Thank you! I purchased a "crap" fleece that was allegidly only good for mulch. Has a good staple length and my sample washed up white. I am not seeing the crap other than what a sheep naturally does as it lives in its own wool.

I felt like that when I opened up the bags to sort for the artist project. We really had to turn off the critics brain and go straight to artist mode. We have not been let down yet!

Wow you just gave me hope my left side is weak due to a stroke and I want to learn to weave, I loom knit a bit it helps to strengthen my fingers I think weaving will help also.

@@arthurlynnkanuha5730 I’m not good at checking comments but this was special. You can warp from both sides and with either hand. It’s a matter of slowing down and teaching ourselves. I had to do this when transitioning from continental knitting to English style. It’s easier when you can control different colors in each hand verses twisting. So it’s the little things!

Many wild animals have winter fur that they naturally build up in autumn and shed in springtime. Sheep were bred by men to not shed, so they keep growing their wool all year round. Their wool are very insulating and trap heat very effectively - if they are not sheared there is a chance a sheep can have a heatstroke if the climate becomes too warm for her fur.

Don't let anything hold you back. Weaving is loads of fun and with practice you can make it work. I might recommend a belt with a keychain doodad (can't think of what it is called!!!) so that you can use a pulley system so that your stronger hand can do the work.

    • @followthesheepwalk
      @followthesheepwalk 3 роки тому

I am so late in responding. You will see on the reed the holes and then the longer openings. It is easier to run the yarns though the holes when you are warping the loom. Then when you are ready to separate the threads you can pull out one an the other is less likely to jump out as well. I hope you found the answer long before this one.
