Basics Training - Renaissance Sword & Dagger
Exercises based on Marozzo and Manciolino, guided by the details set out very well by Di Grassi and Ghislero.
Tough, dangerous discipline, where Tempo Insieme is as effective as it is frighteningly delicate; every movement must be done to the best of its ability, every detail in its place.
Spending even half an hour a day training and taking care of details, especially in this delicate discipline, brings effective and robust results.
Accustoming the body and mind to small and seemingly simple movements is essential to then have a clear and lucid mind during fights, as the “subtle mind” is trained!
What a beautiful Sword & Dagger!

Renaissance sword & buckler - Analysis of 3 actions in free sparring

I hope to be able to make more videos like this, if time permits! The intent is to isolate, propose and analyze actions that I think are close to those set forth in Italian Renaissance treatises, in this case with a main focus on Achille Marozzo. There would be many other details to expound, such as posture and management of footwork, choice of tempo etc etc , but I would say that the main cons...

The ancient masters in the art of weapons of the Italian Renaissance expose the importance in the single sword of the "fist turns" transitions that are necessary to remain well protected behind the sword compared to the opponent. To make these transitions that end up in the guards robust and precise, it is necessary to repeatedly train even the shortest and simplest movements - the sword has a ...

I’m researching sword and dagger fighting for a novel, and I’m trying to better understand how people practice, so this video is awesome for me. Is it possible to put in some links to get more info in your little word slides where you’re telling us what you’re trying to do? It would be so great to be able to see more about what each of those things you’re trying to accomplish are. You gave us the reference texts at the end, but I wonder if there are videos that actually document the various moves. If you could make videos in which you show us what the moves are individually, that would also be so awesome. Really liked your footwork video and would have loved to know more about the steps and how people traditionally practice them. Thanks for sharing these. They’re very cool!

What masters and/or treatises are you pulling from to fight? I cannot get enough of Manciolino (with a spattering of Marozzo), and the entry into play before the exchange at 3:20 looks similar. That, and the single-double-triple feints. All this to say that I really enjoy it, if that wasn't obvious.

@@HungryMungry The Italian tradition is really very united, except for a few details or attitudes. The study I mainly apply is from Marozzo. I know Manciolino and the Anonymus Classesnse, they definitely influence it. Thank you for the compliments

Why cannot someone in HEMA just reconstruct the school of one of the masters in the same fashion that some Japanese ryuhas exists? TSKSR (tenshi shoden katori shinto ryu) for example is a system that progressively begins with the sword but then moves on to spear and halberd. But also covers the use of daggers and has a secret knowledge. What we in the west would call esoteric teachings. Cesare Borgia one of the brightes strategist during the renaissance was known to consult astrology before his campaigns. That's very similar to the secret knowledge of TSKSR.

Idk how far you've come since this post, but when cutting your edge alignment needs work. Also, I believe "Go Rin No Sho" to be the best book on strategy and learning in general. Though a youtuber demonstrating how to properly throw cuts with a two handed grip is what fixed my edge alignment. Some practicioner of the samurai sword, easy vid to find, I believe.
