    I was thinking it would be more worth it. I have a Canon R10 and I want a telephoto lens for animals. I automatically thought of the RF 100-400mm. Native and with high focusing speed in addition to the low price (in my case 600 euros). On the other hand, there is the option of the sigma 150-600 contemporary, with a higher price (800 euros) + adapter (70-100 euros). What do you think is more worth it, losing those important mm in bird photography or the focusing speed in addition to perhaps other problems you have for not being Native?

    • @MarioKilianPhotography
      @MarioKilianPhotography 8 днів тому

      Hi David, thanks for your comment. David, I'm going to base this on my experience. First, the R10 has excellent autofocus, with bird, eye, face recognition, etc., and a really good speed. I wouldn't want to have a lens that restricts those capabilities of my camera, and in that case, I would choose the 100-400 over the Sigma + adapter. Now, something that is an even bigger issue than focal length, in my opinion, is the lens aperture. The Canon lens is f/8 at 400mm, which is quite limiting. The Sigma is f/6.3 at 600mm, and f/6 at 400mm, and that extra light stop is noticeable in wildlife photography. So, the million-dollar question: how much slower will the autofocus be with the Sigma lens? I've used the Sigma lens even on the Nikon Z7 II, and I haven't noticed any drop in speed, but I have noticed that the Sigma’s AF sometimes loses focus, and I need to refocus more than once. Second, what bothers me more: I’m more bothered by a slow lens than slow autofocus. Now, other factors come into play when making the decision, such as the environment. I live in a part of Germany where it’s cloudy with low light for 10 months of the year, so a slow lens causes me much more trouble than slow autofocus. I recommend trying both lenses, buying used gear from a trusted store, and if you don't like it, you can sell it for almost the same price and go for the other one. David, as you can see, I can't give you a definitive answer like "buy this" since so much comes into play. Take care.

      @@MarioKilianPhotography Thank you very much for the quick response. Indeed I see that it is a complicated decision. Where I live the weather is good for a large part of the year, but that doesn't mean that at nightfall all places become dark. I'll see what I finally decide. Still, I hope Canon allows us to collaborate with Sigma or Tamron for their R mounts. Greetings and thanks!

    Sadly where I live. people were getting too close to a couple baby seals in the marina. I have seen a lady post a pic of her taking pics of a baby not more then 5 feet away! This is against the laws in our state and both of the babies died, abandoned they believe by their Mothers! I have always stayed a good distance away and use zoom lenses. The 70mm to 300mm first and now the 200mm to 500mm lens. I see whale watching boats running down whales out back of our house facing the water! They get too close. It does not seem to matter that they get reported! We had a whale wash up dead on the island we look out over. This was a great video to post Mario! I have no problems getting pics I want and still respecting wildlife. I have a bird blind I set up out back of my home as well as camo cover on that big lens I just got recently. Just starting to use it as I do so much free hand photography...seldom use a tripod at this point. We have a very high concentration of birds on this island, no power lines, 15 mph speed limit, private island with only around 80 folks year round. Over 300 houses, mainly secondary homes...no stores..no businesses. You boat off for groceries once a week or take the private ferry. 5.5 nautical miles from Everett which is a suburb of Seattle.

      Hello Romy!!!, sorry for the delay in my response, I was in Aachen for a few days. Romy, how sad to read what you told me, I really believe that the most important thing in wildlife is respect. Unfortunately, as you say I have also experienced similar situations, to be honest here in Germany the respect for wildlife is wonderful, there is a great culture of protecting animals and flora. However, when I was in Central and South American countries, things were very different, and it was terrible to see the behavior of many people, both towards wildlife and nature. Romy, you tell me that you live on an island near Seattle, from what you describe it must be a wonderful place!!!, I don't know much about the United States, only some sectors in Illinois and Arizona, when I worked as a Photographer for a cosmetics (body care) company. Romy, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking the time to tell this story. I send you a big hug and always take care of yourself.

I do indeed Love it and just added a used but great condition 200mm to 500mm Nikon big Zoom lens...that has been a game changer! I must say I got nearly equal the quality from the 70-300mm lens but....the extra focal length is getting me shots I couldn't with the other one.

      Hello Romy, thank you very much for sharing your experience!!! Without a doubt the 70-300 is a good lens, but the 200-500 is a game changer!!!, for many years it was the lens we all dream of and an icon in zoom´s for wildlife. @@MarioKilianPhotography Hello Mario, thank you for your kind response. Oh my, I see so much out here that is different from where you live. I am over 50% German and my name was derived from Romy Schneider the actress as my Father enjoyed her movies....my Grandfathers last name was Schneider and they changed it to Snyder to sound more American during Hitlers regime. I have wanted to visit Germany when things allow for it. I was able to shoot photos of an Osprey in a nest with her young yesterday at the marina with the 200mm to 500mm lens off a moving ferry. There were dolphins on the way back home from shopping on the private ferry happened too fast to capture though. Our boat is out of the water needing a repair. The picture in my profile here was taken with that 70mm to 300mm max zoom and I could not even see what type of bird I was shooting...I literally assumed it was a sea gull? I cropped it and found out I got some pretty good shots of a flying Osprey! I was able to get a family of seals where the couple look like they are kissing and the baby pops up playfully in front of them with water froze in the air with the big zoom lens yesterday as well as boats flying on the water and kites. How would I send you pics? You don't have your contact info below this video.

      @@romy4593 Romy, your story is incredible!! Romy Schneider was a beautiful actress, I don't remember much of her movies but they must have undoubtedly been beautiful. How interesting to know that you are 50% German, have you been here in Germany? When you come you were welcome, we will do some photography tours together!! I have been living here for almost 4 years, I don't know exactly how many more it will be since they depend on my work. Some time ago I was on a tour in Brazil, it was also on a boat, unfortunately that day was very cloudy so the lack of light prevented me from using a high shutter speed and many photos did not turn out well, definitely photographing from a vehicle in motion is very difficult, so I congratulate you on the photos of the Osprey and Seals. Romy, my email is on the home page of my UA-cam channel, (mariokilianphoto@gmail.com). A hug and have a beautiful Sunday.

      @@MarioKilianPhotography Thank you for your kind response and invitation to shoot photography with you. That would be a wonderful time! Its on my list to visit but I have not been to Germany. The night before we were born, my father watched a movie with Romy Schneider in it. I was named after her and my twin was named Lori. The suddenly elusive pair of eagles that live below our home have not been seen in weeks! That has never happened in 18 years...hope one did not lose its mate? They are an old pair. I was standing on the ferry at the stern...taking far off shots of seals...managed to get a female and male looking like they were about to kiss? Then up in the water in front pops up a baby with a splash...I caught that shot by accident. I will send you a few shots of different things I get here and would love to get some shots back. Check your email in a little bit and you will see one from me.

    Hi, first your video is appreciated.! I type this as I'm still in New Zealand hotel and can say zoom lens in NZ forest will be more advantageous. I was at Tiriri M. Island and saw several birders with prime 500mm and was too far. I got most shot with my Nikon 70 300 and they missed the small Whiteheads that were in the bushes.

    • @MarioKilianPhotography
      @MarioKilianPhotography Місяць тому

      Hi Kenny, thank you very much for your comment. Indeed, a 500 or 600mm f4 prime lens is what is used professionally. Although a lens of this type does not make the photographer, it must be recognized that a fast lens allows you to use a teleconverter and still maintain a good aperture and obtain sharp photos. The 300mm lens is an excellent teacher, since it forces you to have more skills, so if at some point you can opt for a 600 zoom or a 600 prime it will be much easier than if you had started with one of those. A hug.

      Muito obrigado Luiz, tenho ótimas lembranças do Brasil, lindo país e povo. Luiz, na verdade você pode limitar a distância de foco de duas maneiras: 1-com o botão na lateral e seus dois modos predefinidos, 2-com o acessório sigma para programar a lente. Com o acessório Sigma é mais preciso, pois você pode escolher a faixa em que deseja que o foco funcione. No meu caso, em 90% dos casos tenho uma faixa de foco de 10 metros a 50 metros, sei que qualquer pássaro a mais de 50 metros de distância ficará muito pequeno no enquadramento. Um abraço e uma ótima semana.🤗

      Hi Angus, thank you very much for your comment. To your suggestion, my reference to maintaining a place to photograph is in the context of only learning to shoot and becoming an expert, it is easier to learn to use your equipment if you go to a place where you already know what type and at what time there will be birds. Then when you already know how to use your equipment well, obviously the best thing is to search and search for places even outside your country. Maybe in this video part I missed the phrase "until you are an expert in using your equipment." A hug and good weekend.

      @MarioKilianPhotography Місяць тому

      @@dr.chungusphd108 Hi Chungus, sorry for the delay in my response. To your question, I have never had a Tamron lens, therefore I could not give an objective opinion on the matter. I think the best thing is to search on UA-cam or Google for someone who has directly compared both lenses. What I can tell you is that the quality of Sigma is that I have used their lenses for more than 15 years as a secondary lens and I have never had any problems. On the other hand, when I have asked for a Firmware update, Sigma's response has been exceptional. . A hug.

      Thank you very much Randall for your kind comment 🤗. Indeed, this lens makes me happy, I can use it for multiple tasks without it failing, and the results are quite good. Currently I no longer have this lens, since I changed to the Sport 60-600 version, the big difference is that the Sport version is waterproof, so I can take photographs regardless of the weather conditions. Can I use this lens with EOS R6 Mark II?

    • @MarioKilianPhotography
      @MarioKilianPhotography 2 місяці тому

      Hi Paul, I have never test the R6 Mark 2 with the Sigma. With the R6M2 the focal lenght will be effective 150 to 600mm, like with my Nikon z7, and all the bennefits of the full frame sensor.....but.... The only thing is that Canon´s R5 and R6 have an focus issue called Pulsing, and the R6M2 may have it to. Duade Paton, a great Photographer, solved or at least reduced this problem a year ago changing some settings. I would recommend Googling specifically for this camera with this lens on youtube, you will surely find an appropriate answer. Big Hug.

    Excellent! At a shutter speed of 1/1000 second, I could not detect any difference between using a stable tripod versus hand-held. Being close to the bird and having the early morning sun are keys for getting razor sharp photos with waterfowl. Shooting RAW also as 12-bit pixels have more information than 8-bit JPEG pixels.

    • @MarioKilianPhotography
      @MarioKilianPhotography 2 місяці тому

      Exactly, 1/1000 is a very high shutter speed, years ago it was even the limit. But if you use a 600mm lens on a camera with Crop Sensor (+-850mm) you notice that the field of view is quite small and the vibration of the hand is very noticeable. Now if we photograph small birds in flight, without a doubt 1/1000 is the lower limit. The early morning sun is really a wonderful light. A hug and thanks for commenting. have a nice weekend.

    I would like to point out that you SHOULD give your lecture in your native German language! We here in America are way more advanced than Europeans when it comes to photography and really don't need a German with VERY limited English vocabulary to educate us. I think your expertise would be better served for your German audience.

      Don’t take the information presented here as an indicator for the state of photography in Europe. Actually the information presented here is rather basic by European standards, too. I also think that the majority of the “advantage” you claim is due to the much easier shooting conditions in America.

    • @zenadventurer69
      @zenadventurer69 2 місяці тому

      As soon as an American (better delineated as US citizen since anyone living in the Americas is technically American) says anything is better in America than in pretty much anywhere else in the world - especially when it comes to art - I immediately discount it. Most “Americans” who make comparisons with other countries have never been out of theirs. And anyone saying it is the best country on earth clearly is not aware that the US isn’t even the best country in this hemisphere. American exceptionalism needs to go.

    The longer the focal length, the more you have to pay attention to additional detail. The depth of field becomes more apparent. So your focus becomes more critical- or you have to stop down and increase DOF. Lens vibration also plays a role. How you hold the lens affects how it vibrates to both movements and things like shutter slap etc. I find from 400mm upwards these aspects affect my images. It looks like soft focus, but it is not. With practice it improves

    Some great old time tips Way back in film days , a tripod was said to be the first item that should be bought after the camera. We just had to have a good solid tripod . After too many cheap **** , I got a heavy "Manfrotto tripod 055B" with a massive "Manfrotto 168 ball head" and massive "Manfrotto hexagonal plate" . I use that for over 20 years -- maybe 30 years. There were others that were a lot heavier . However, modern digital cameras (Olympus now) have made me so lazy, so bugger using a tripod even though I know I will take less photos but with more keepers if I use a tripod. I'm not into serious bird photography , not enough patience so I need (don't use it enough ) a tripod that gets down low and dirty --- even below ground level for my "little photos inside the Big Picture" and the tripod I have now is similar to a "Alta Pro 2+ 263AB100 | Aluminum Tripod with Ball Head" . Certain not the most stable but certainly the more versatile even if it can be a bit of a Rubik cube at times . I use a Manfrotto ball head . Tripod test from film days: set up the gear with a long lens --- back then 300mm was long for most. While looking through the viewfinder , tap the lens ; if the movement continues the tripod is not good enough ! 2:14 loose screws : try a little of finger-nail polish on top of screw and surrounding metal to keep screws tight . If the screw moves you can see the break in the nail polish . A small dob of paint will do similar . There also commercially products like Lock tight that go on the screw thread. Keep the tripod in a bag so a fallen screw can be found . Trouser/pants legs can make good inexpensive bags . 3:20 straps : use a couple of small dog clips or similar on the strap to make it easier to remove/replace the strap . Also means you may only need one strap for all cameras . You may need to add key-rings to the camera also . The clips don't need be monstrously heavy --- use the rule of common sense . I have used name-tag clips Today; photography is something I do to get me out of house, and keep the brain active with Old Lr5 and Affinity Photo . And spend too much time on bloody UA-cam 😇🤣

      Hi Ian, nice to read from you. With your first sentence you reminded me of my father, who always told me that without a tripod there is no good photo. Of course, those were times when it was very common to have to shoot in low light, and keeping the camera stable was only using a tripod. My childhood was surrounded by tripods... Nowadays, as you say, cameras having stabilizers like lenses has been a big change in the way we take photos. Ian, thank you very much for the additional tips!!!
