The best relic job I've seen is Rory Gallagher's Bassman :)
Only morons put the mains ground on a solder tag attached with a bolt to the chassis. You should always solder the mains ground straight to the chassis with a very high wattage soldering iron because vibrations in amplifiers have the habit of loosening bolts holding solder tags on so anyone worth his salt knows this and never uses them for mains grounding but apparently you were sick the day they taught this....
So funny, my ears instantly picked up when the Goldtop was being used. Gibson guitar into a Fender amp, hard to beat.😊
You did a great job. We appreciate about your kindness to share this video to public . We learnt a lot from you . Could we ask a question? If 5D1 Tweed Champ to burn out The Stand-up Power Transformer, what brand name and what PT can you replace it ?! Please let us know because we have the same amp but unfortunately to burn out PT. Thank you so much sir.
4 years on and this video was s still relevant! Fantastic content, gentlemen
Hey Hugh you’ve been quiet for a while and I love your videos
To much mmmm yeah mmmhhhmmm yeah mmmmm. 😂, the guy in the background is all he does the whole time the other guy is talking. Get on with it I'm getting grey hair over here lol. Good video though and some good knowledge to.
I dunno about these potentionemer types with a valve head? I've had enough "scratchy" pot experience with dead spots on pots in the past and a valve head seeing no output load can be a very bad thing indeed for it's health!
good point . Maybe hardwire a version using 2 hi power resistors. but you have to know how much attenuation you want. Could us a switch with several values, if you're confident it won't fail...
I would like to expose the bias pots with screw holes, or even pots with knobs :D - That is a REAL NICE JAM!!
Blood hell, at 18:15 & 18:22 vs 19:56 you've got the "IN PUT" on the opposite side of the project !!! ; the Diagram and mate doing the "work" are at Odds ; the soldering of L-Pad terminal #1 at 22:04 is confusing vs Diagram ; the edit at 22:09... (?) and at the end of the video one of the "grounds" is not hooked up... And what's with using the "cloth wire" obstructing the view... !? Very sloppy video (guys), for those of us not so good at electronics, but I will try... sheesh ¿?!
3 YEARS LATER BUT... try changing the cover of DRY z with the cover of the Original paf....
This is amazing! I'm gonna build one! Thanks guys this is awesome.
Why is one jack stereo and the other jack mono?
Messy wiring will make these pickguards a nightmare to get on around the pickups... yours was so tidy
Tallinn about amps, but using them as stools and hiding them by sitting on them. In my eyes that's a bad concept. And, it makes you look poor. You could use a pair of chairs. The amps could be free to be displayed.
Thank you for your great tutorial video. I'm just building my own fuzz after the article you mentioned here. May I ask some questions to your remarkable work? It would have been very helpful for me to understand more of your transistor selection requirements. I'm still not sure if the 1st stage transistor has to have a much lower hfe then 2nd stage transistor. And do silicium and germanium transistors are to be in the same hfe range, if you want to change the order with the switches? If you change the order of si and ge transistors you can have a silicium transistor with a much higher hfe value in the 1st stage than the germanium transistor in the 2nd stage. Does this work? The recommended silicium transistors BC108, BC109 have a hfe that is two times higher than my AC127. It would be nice if you could explain how to connect the negative side of electrolytic capacitors (for input and volume there is no obvious negative side in the schematic) , if you are not so lucky and having film caps. And maybe you could clarify which are the final values of the caps you are using in your video (as you get confused with the caps and their values I lost track). And one last thing that would also be helpful: Please specify which type of pots (A, B, C) you are using/recommending. I've tryed to read from the photos ;-) Thanks again. This also a good source on building a diy fuzz pedal: ua-cam.com/video/cagEeiq3u98/v-deo.html
I just picked up a 90s bassman. The tweed is dirty and I'd like to lacquer it. I wondered if that would look odd or not. Anyone try this ?
Great tutorial. I love it and going to try it by myself. May I ask a question? I've a chinese mulit-testing device with a display (called T7-H) which shows me the Hfe and several other values when I test my transistors. I'm not sure which of the readings is equivalent to the leakage you are measuring. There are values called Ube, Ic, Ice0, Ices. Could you or anybody else give me a hint which of these values are to be subtracted from the Hfe to get the real leakage of the Germanium BJTs? My guess is Ice0 And one hint: the typical pin numbers of the 3PDT switches may vary if you look at schematics you'll find at google.
I have a 5C3. Are the only circuit difference’s between the mine and your 5A3, the 1 meg negative feedback resistor? Mine sounds a lot cleaner. Thank you and love the video and the new one on that pedal show. Do you have any preferences? Negative feedback or not?
Those heavily produced demos don't do the amps any justice, burried in the mix and who knows what else. I have that same amp and the pure sound is totally different.
I have one just like that, bought in the 1980s, extremely rare to find in Europe. Still have it. And still regret that i did not buy the small brown Amp the guy also had for sale, must have been a princeton, did not like the sound when i played it and bought only the champ.
OMG Ive been looking for this for so long Thank You Cheers 👍
Refret with which frets model?
IF he wants to sell those pickups you replaced, let me know. I'll be cruising the yard sales in the meantime. lol Otherwise, nice job. It sounds great, but the originals just sounded more Rick to me. I would love to put them on one of my hollow-bodies just to see if it sounds like a Rickenbacker. Sadly a real Rick is way over my budget, but that has been a sound I have been chasing for a while swapping out weird, cheap one off pickups. Worked for a Firefly Tele that came alive with a new pickup. The wood is just fine on those, but the hardware leaves much to be desired.
Glad you’re not wearing masks 👍🏻
nice fuzz pedal
Thanks kindly Gents - most informative! Quick question for you: I have a 5b3 (which I believe is the same circuit). Can I do the same input mod, or could I jumper my guitar into both inputs with a splitter on the 5b3? Already did the speaker swap for obvious reasons. Thanks much, Naybor Dave in Canada.
Why dont people "relic" brand new Ferraris?
I cannot understand damaging a brand new amp or guitar just to make it look vintage, Not sure how this trend got started.
Why don't just swap the speaks, 90% is the character and sensitivity in db gives the louder and more crunchy delivery.
The best demo on convincingly aging plastic parts that I have seen so far! Thank You!
High Gain pickups are pretty bland but Toasters are beautiful sounding pickups.
If it were me (speaking only for myself), and if I knew the extant frets had been side installed, I would remove them accordingly but would top install the next set of frets. It's a lovely technique, but it requires the fret wire be at the exact radius, pre-install, rather than over radiused. Without a radiusing wheel, you should not attempt this.
This is art!!!!
14:08 Little Barrie is the cat that got me into the “three-three-ohs” in the first place! So now I’m on the hunt and looking for something that doesn’t cost half of what my car did. 😂❤
Was this like $40k worth of guitars four years ago? Cuz it is now in 2024! ❤
WHAT ARE U DOING!!! 😮22 MICRO FARAD WAS FINE !! WHY, WHY, WHY??? ANSWER THE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE TO STATE YOUR REASON OTHER THAN BLIND OBEDIENCE TO ORIGINAL SCHEMATIC. THANK YOU
question to anyone who knows: What feature of pickup construction gives clarity when a chord is strummed (clean or distorted) instead of just a big muck sound that blends together?
Intro sounds like mark knopfler 😂
The blackface is way better. The brown is all nasally mids and ice pick in the earhole highs. Compared head to head the blackface is so much more pleasing and smooth. 6 speakers? Bet it was loud. Surprised it didn’t blow his pants legs off.
PRoblem is that these cheap plastic L-pads can't handle much more than a 20 watt amp. I have a 40 watt tube amp. The curernt plastic based 100 watt L-pads cant handle the heat. Mine melted and started to smoke within minutes of use.. My 15 watt super champ x2 does not make it too hot.
Hi I'm new to this iv have a 5watt and a 40 watt can anyone tell me if I can make one that works for both and is it safe please n thanks
If you're watching this in 2024 and lust after a great 330 style guitar, I am completely smitten with my Stanford CR thinline 30. Since Gibson no longer deem the 330 worth making, this is a fantastic instrument at an approachable price.
The problem with building partscasters is finding a neck. Firstly finding one that is traditional single truss rod and then one that doesn't have an extremely narrow width at nut like the Allparts necks and most other non US ones. I'm left handed which limits it even further. I hate anything narrower than 42.5mm at the nut. My US Strat is over 43mm. You can get anything you want from Warmoth but the import to the UK is obscene cost. Fender have some Mexican made roasted maple necks at the moment which are really nice and reasonable nut width. Those are not that cheap though. I'm using one of those for a Cabronita. I got a very nice Korina wood Cabronita body many years ago. I would like to build a Jazzmaster. It has to be left handed but will I even be able to get a left handed Vibrato for it.
what a knowledgeable character , he should write a fender book. dont these very old fenders have numbers on the black back pickups ? it seems theyre all wound in the same direction from something he said.
Any chance you might modify the Gemini diagram to show the push pull .0047 circuit?
excellent thank you sir. Interesting how much noiser the silicon transistors are. I recently built a tone bender kit with silicon transistors and its sound great, but when the fuzz is maxed out it is quite noisey (hiss)... I can bias the the transistors to remove the noise but it just doesn't sound as tasty. I've read a few forms that mention adding a small capacitor across the trany can help.
This sir is an amazing video! So glad to see traditional cleaning techniques used. Legend!
What a massive improvement to that middle pickup you made there. I used to wind pickups 300 years ago. You wouldn't know cause you don't speak to others. The dinosaurs used to take me swimming 🏊♂️ Men are world famous liars. Deal with it.
I dont get the Butter Machine...way too gainy and raspy for me
