Hello, I’ll keep it short here🙂. The lead keel is bolted on the lower part of the rest of the keel which is a part of the hull, BUT it is extremely solid, and either long keel, or modified (long) fin keel. Check out my latest video, you’ll see her on shore. There are stories of Nauticats running aground at full speed, with nothing but scratches in the lead, but not one with keel problems as I know about. Pros and cons, excuse me for maybe being a bit biased…😬☝️ Pros: -Heavy and very solid built, no squeaking or scary noises. -Overall great build quality and woodwork -Roomy for the size, wheelhouse gives extra space, also nice in bad weather -Holds the value very well -Comfortable motion at sea -separate engine room -very good safety numbers, stability, capsize and comfort ratio. -big tanks, big engine, great range. ++++++ Cons: -Expensive to buy -Slower than most lighter production boats, if you don’t go for the S&S designed models. -The aft deck is flat and high of the water, so depending on model it is not feeling as “safe” as a deep and protected cockpit. -because of the wheelhouse the side decks can be a bit cluttered with sheets. -motorsailer models have ce rating B because of the side doors -chainplates are weak and need attention on older models. All boats are compromises, but one good point is to check the average time of ownership. Nauticat owners usually keep their boats for a very long time, which in itself says something. @@Stefanesai thanks for the best wishes. I don’t actually know the hull number, I’ve paid the deposit and just waiting on the survey. No problems are anticipated. Once I have the boat in my hands I’ll let you know the number, I’ll get back to you at some point for info on the groups. I don’t have face book but I’ll do an account soon

You’ll probably find the hull number painted inside the anchor locker. At least if it’s one of the older ones. I have nr 97 from 1980🙂. Best of luck to you🙂👍👍

Sure, no problem! But under sail it is better on longer stretches or in stable conditions as all sail handling must be done outside.

Depending on how many people you are and your needs and expectations it surely can be done. Space is always an issue, and like a garage, they will never be big enough. But with size comes cost so there will always be a compromise. Visit a few if you can, and imagine living there with all your stuff🙂

Two years ago… we did a round trip around Senja two years ago, and on our way back we saw a Nauticat in the distance heading north just south of Steigen! We could see someone looking back at us through the binoculars but could not make out a name. We sailed, and this other boat motor sailed with the mizzen up. Could it be….????

It is a 27 kg Ultra Anchor. We replaced our old CQR 27 kg and it is a day and night difference. A really great anchor, couldn’t be happier with it, despite the high cost.

Believe me, there is nothing I would like more! But like everyone I need to keep working, so maybe one day one will be able to go and never look back🤠. I would for sure head for a bit warmer climates😬

We have a bow thruster.

The engine max speed is rated 2600 rpm. We never go full throttle. We cruise at 1500-1800 rpm, normally doing 6,5-7 knots at 1700 rpm. The new prop we installed is a trade off, we lost some power under engine so going into the weather and waves affects speed a little more than with the old fixed prop. However, we easily gained a knot in light and medium conditions under sail, so an ok trade off. At next haul out we will try to adjust the pitch a little and see how that turns out.

If i only went out on the boat when the weather is nice, trips would be few and far apart. Up here we can have four seasons in an hour…🤷‍♂️😤

All boats have their issues, but I really think it helps that they are built well to begin with! After owning this boat for a few years now, and putting down a lot of hours, I would still buy and older, heavy displacement well built boat over a newer cheap production boat any day of the week.

In the fjords, between steep mountains the winds are so unpredictable that sailing from the inside is challenging. And I like the fresh air🙂. But I’d rather be sailing in a warmer climate❤️🤠. The wood stove works in any condition, but we add a piece of chimney which is in the way of the boom, so normally we don’t sail and have a fire at the same time. Also, fire on a boat is not something to be taken lightly, so it’s better under supervision in a controlled environment.

She can do more or less everything. She can’t go as close to the wind as “proper” sailboats, closer than around 40 degrees apparent wind angle is pushing it. And she is a bit slower, but she’ll get there comfortably 🙂

Hi, every boat is a compromise, and the trick is to try and prioritize your wishes and demands, and go from there. Some things will be important, and some things not so important, while others may be dealbreakers. When we were “window shopping” as you say, we had a few “must have” on our list. A proper pilot house, a proper inside and outside helm position, solid rails and bulwarks, since we have kids and a big dog was some of them. Also solid built, a keel that won’t fall off and a skeg hung rudder. We always came back to Nauticat, even though we found a few other brands here and there, Motiva 39 was one we looked at. But it didn’t set my heart on fire… So to answer your question, yes. Very happy. The cons on our model is the lack of a proper cockpit, which makes sailing in rough weather from the aft deck not optimal. Also, it is now 43 years old, but she’s a lovely boat. Plans for a change is somewhere down the road, probably several years down, and we are considering a more sailing oriented Nauticat 43, which may suit future plans better. Or, my dream, a 441… but as dreams are cheap, reality is not, and those are for now out of reach for me. But yes, happy with the 38 and it will take a lot for the next boat NOT to be a Nauticat👍🙂
