Sergei Bondarchuks version of War and Peace is a film like no other, made at the height of the Soviet film industry with the full backing of the USSR. Only 751 subs? For such an incredible channel?
Excellent doc! Thanks!
It was a stunning thing to watch, and I appreciate your insight on the epic. Thanks!!
Excellent exegesis. Very intelligent, articulate and enlightening. A lot crammed into less than fifteen minutes and my own regret is that you couldn't go to a half hour. If I may add a small grace note, Kurosawa was known to be a great admirer of the work and visual poetry of John Ford, going so far as wearing dark glasses on the set just as Pappy always did due to weak eyes. At the end, when Arseniev puts Dersu's walking stick on his grave and pauses a moment, it is strikingly similar to the end of Ford's "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" when Ranse Stoddard (James Stewart) puts the cactus plant on the pauper's coffin of the forgotten Tom Doniphon (John Wayne). Both Stoddard and Arseniev do so in tribute to men who were once tigers but now forgotten and their worlds quickly disappearing under the grinding heel of progress. Just my own subjective thoughts.
When cgi is not available, u just use the real thing.
9:17 Plastic bags were not actually produced in the Soviet Union. And citizens of the Soviet Union brought their own bags from home. That's why there was no trash in the Soviet Union
The acting wasn’t that remarkable in some parts but the battle scenes though…. They will truly never make them like this again
I remember as a teenager being completely overwhelmed by this truly epic movie when it was first shown here in Australia. Only recently was I able to see it in its original uncut format again and am convinced it is the greatest movie ever made.
Take a breath when talking.
Just watched the film and now i truly appreciate why it is one of the finest films ever made. Thank you for paying tribute to this masterpiece!
A shame that because of the Cold War, the actual men of the 92nd Gordon didn't get to be in the scene where their forefathers became famous.
those poor horses
One of my late uncle's former coworkers (he was a postal clerk) was in Gettysburg the movie as a cavalry trooper in Gen. Buford's division early on in the film. He had a blink and you miss scene in it
Read the book. Pevear/Volkonsky trans. The Soviet movie is pretty good but somehow misses main power probably because you can’t turn certain books into movies, such as “Great Gatsby”.
Thank you for committing the daunting amount of research to cover this topic. My questions about the film’s seemingly impossible existence were not only answered, but even exceeded my perceptions of the lengths gone through to achieve it.
This makes Jackson’s Lord of The Rings look like a college student’s project.
Such a decisive battle in history needs a great movie and that’s what Waterloo’s 1970 version is all about.
And to think Mosfilm made all 4 parts free on UA-cam, like damn.
I totally spoiled a family lunch engagement when I was a child. I court the end of this film once in the 1970s. The next time I saw it advertised was when my family when due to go to lunch with an X motor racing Marshall and his recently married German 😢wife ( quite a pleasant individual I thought in regards to my child hood knowledge [ ww2 films///propaganda] of Germans and being a boy totally interested in war army's I E soilders lad stuff .. Basically I cried to see it that much that the hosts had to have the Battle of Waterloo playing on a TV in the dinningroom whist (they) were eating lunch. WELL, I couldn't take all my sentences off the fight ! WOW WHAT A MASSIVE MOVIE ❤❤❤😮😮😮😅😅😅😅😅
I was 7 when this came out, always loved it. My ancestor was in the Iron Brigade “Black Hats” he was in the 24th Michigan
Wanna know what's never hard to do, find people more than willing to play the confederate traitors and pretend to defend slavery with pride. They justify this action with some self-fed fantasy of state's rights n such. If only they read the actual articles of war if only they could read them without misrepresenting what they clearly say and mean. It's never been hard to find traitors in this nation, look to the republican treason party.

Overall a great movie, i'm happy a game I like which has a turn on historical events has a reference to it
Honestly this channel is a little treasure that helps discover even more treasures and masterpieces.
This is very nice to hear, I hope I can bring more great films to your attention in the future.
Unfortunately the film is somewhat of an apologist for Durnford, making him out to be the all wise, all knowing hero of the piece. This is very far from the truth. It's very inaccurate and skewed in favour of Durnford and based on old outdated myths such as the Donald Morris book. It totally misrepresents the real scenarios and especially the actual battle. Cheers.
The white uniformed bearskin lads are Dutch, not Austrian.
Mind you, they could be Saxon or Italian too.
Superb analysis of the film.
Fantastic video, a compilation of truly breathtaking and 🤯facts. It actually breaks my heart the film didn't do well in America, both because it deserved success, and my country is full of ignorant idiots.
Great review. Forgot to mention the eclipse that occured during the battle. I really like the relationships between Bob Hoskins and Dai Bradley, and Peter Vaughan and Phil Daniels.
Thank you, sadly due to time constraints there were many things I didn't mention that I could have.
To be honest, hardly anyone there even noticed it and none mentioned it as far as I can find out. Maori Browne, watching on from out on the plain a few miles away never noted it nor did anyone at Rorkes Drift. Neither those hanging around at Mangeni or at Rorkes Drift said anything about an eclipse. You'd think they would have if it was prominent.
I enjoyed the Escaflowne movie on Adult Siwm. Let me tell you. Grity and realistic didn't stop it from being enjoyed by girls more than boys.
I was stationed in England at the time in the USAF and saw this on the Big Screen at a Leicester SquareTheatre in London! I thought it was great!
Zulu was made and acted by liberals who were proud to be British while Zulu Dawn was made and acted by liberals who wanted to push White guilt. In zulu the British soldiers were strong, proud and competent. In zulu Dawn British soldiers are weak, childlike, and cruel.
Kubrick is still watching it now......
It makes you think why the command split there forces when entering Zululand, hadn't they heard what had happened to George Armstrong Custer at the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876, that's only 3 years before this Battle in 1879. He to split is force into 3 columns , it's almost the same mistakes. Still our Military Disaster is bigger than the American Disaster, so we win on that Score. I do prefer this Movie to Zulu, because of it slow pace and build up to the Battle. though didn't know Simon Ward's Character was killed in the Battle, thank you for the Information. Enjoyed your Review of Zulu Dawn. Ps notice some of these actors have appeared in Midsomer Murders.
This film totally ignores that Chelmsford only split his force because a large recon patrol went out the day before, saw a large number of Zulus (circa 2,000) and decided to engage them late in the day instead of returning to the camp at Isandlwana. They had to spend a harrowing night in the hills and sent a rider back to Chelmsford with a message calling for assistance. Chelmsford didn't really have much choice. He couldn't ignore their request for help, and sending a token force out could have met with disaster. Instead he acted wisely. He sent a strong self sufficient force out and kept a strong force back at the camp. He ordered the camp to keep it's forces drawn in and act only on the defensive, and he sent for Durnford to reinforce the numbers. Unfortunately Durnford decided to ignore his own orders and those given to Pulleine at the camp and he rode off out chasing after Zulus, dispersing forces out here, there and everywhere and pressured Pulleine to support and protect his rash venture. It was quite different to Custer. Custer sent all his forces out on the offensive didnt he? Chelmsford didn't.
two great movies, been to both places and ridden both battles well done
Good movie, too bad it's one of the forgotten ones.
My husband was there at Pickett's Charge week as a reenactor. Your commentary is very good and covers all the main points. Saw a few familiar faces in your video. He met Martin Sheen, Richard Jordan, Stephen Lang, and Morgan Shepard, who were all terrific. His company was also (surprise!) featured on the cover of the Video release. Cheers.
THE Civil War movie in the eyes of myself and many others, Glory is great but this one shows so many small details; the scenes showing the camps; some playing what was called rounders that became baseball. Things like that. I have done reenacting and a lot of living history from Rev War to WW2 and everyone I have ever talked to says that this movie sets the mark for realism. Just like Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers do for WW2
This documentary about this movie was well made. Great job and thank you from Holland.

Got it on Blue-Ray Disk. Looks fantastic on my 135 inch Projection screen.
Dude.... you are right on the money about this film
'Gettysburg' is my all-time favorite movie; I've never gotten tired of rewatching it. Both the historical battle and the movie were certainly epic, and the acting/character portrayals gripping. With the fate of their respective armies, the nation (and eventually the world) hanging in the balance, it is thought-provoking to consider the effect on history of the words spoken, decisions made, and actions taken by the officers (especially Colonel Chamberlain and General Lee) at critical moments. Kudos to everyone from Michael Shaara to Ron Maxwell, Ted Turner, the actors, the reenactors, and production crew who made this movie an underrated epic.
The logistics and labour for this is goddamn insane.
Such a pithy reaction, this insane word must be the new argo - I suppose it means it's good.

Where did you get the footage of Russians queuing at the cinema? Is it available on disc?
I got it from a television program called Les Sovietiques, its available on the Criterion Collection Blu Ray of War and Peace.
Not to butt in but I think I too have seen something of this footage of Russians queuing as well and a theatre packed with excited faces as the cast of the film are officially introduced at the beginning of production. It was part of the DVD extras to the non blue ray DVD box set. Bondarchuk looks every inch the avuncular director and not unlike Peter the Great. He had a daunting task ahead.
Didn't even know. BTS videos existed
