Who Was Horace Silver? The Genius Of Hard Bop
The photo at 3:15 is Blue Mitchell, not Kenny. He could sing as well, This is The Moment. Voice almost as beautiful as his horn playing. I thought I had everything of his and today I came across a recording The Arrival Of on the JARO International label, he takes multiple choruses and the playing is straight fire. One of the things I love about Kenny is charting his development and how he continued to grow musically into the 60s. He's like Harold Land in that way. Kenny was equally at home as a sideman with Bird as he was playing very modern on In and Out with Joe Henderson. Thanks for covering these guys. The 40s and 50s are my all time favorite jazz. I'm stuck in a time capsule and I'm loving it.
You're right. I thought I switched that out. Thank you. Yeah, I feel that the forties and Fifties were forgotten. A lot of people think jazz started in 1959 when musicians looked to distance themselves from Charlie Parker. But in my opinion just ended up watering it down. Thanks for watching.
Ridiculous tempo! Thank you.
Listening has always worked for me as a drummer.
‘Modal fused with hard bop’ didnt work??? What the fuck is that? One Step Beyond is one of the best Blue Note Albums of the catalog, Right Now, Demons Dance are amazing albums… Utter closeminded bullshit
When did Jackie get clean?
I believe it was in the middle 60s.
I heard a live interview from when Jackie was teaching in Connecticut. He happened to mention that he practiced three hours a day, and the interviewer was shocked. "You practice every day?" They don't get it - a musician does music. It's not like a football coach who doens't play football. A musician who's a teacher is a musician, and NEEDS to make music. It's not a chore, or just what you do when you're young.
Don't forget the actual album called Kenny Durham and the Jazz Prophets Vol1 on ABC Paramount from 1956!
Always one of my favorites. I’ve listened to everything I could get a hold of by Don. His sound was gigantic, unbelievably robust, and his instrumental technique second to none. Thanks for the video.
My brother-in-law always praised Kenny Durham. He would also agree with this post regarding Durham as being underrated.
You passed away 62 years ago today but your legacy lives on. R.I.P., Piano Wizard❤
Where can i listen to the piano music playing the background?
That's made especially for these Bio's. Thanks for watching and listening
Thank you ❤
Like many musicians. Gone too soon. I have much of his Blue Note work.
No one who knows jazz has forgotten Kenny Dorham.
@@dank.6942 that’s he problem. Not many know jazz before 1959.
Thank you for creating these educational videos.
He was also a very underrated composer. Got some great tunes
He cut an excellent record with John Coltrane, Cecil Taylor and Chuck Isreaels.
He was Great.
Far from forgotten. Is this a spoken Wikipedia page?
Encyclopedia of Jazz and a few of Our own observations. Thanks for watching Troll man.
@@BigOnBebop You still copied word for word s big chunk of the biography section on Wikipedia. Cmon man
His playing on Pedro's time some of my favorite
Thanks!
I 'll never forget Kenny Durham !
Dorham
I am always spellbound and humbled when I hear a player like KD.
Excellent! Really appreciate your work.
Thanks for watching.
I always enjoy your podcasts! I'm a jazz fan, but I want to learn more about Bebop- your program is great- Keep up the great job, it is appreciated- THANK YOU!
Great video. I learned a lot.
His album of Ellington and Strayhorn tunes is a prized possession and beyond beautiful. One of his best.
Died to young.😢
For The Peacocks alone, Jimmy has a place in Jazz Heaven. A better song has never been written.
Fantastic, have many of this records, love him, and Tommy Flanagan, to death.
Interesting topic, but the voiceover is way to quiet compared to the music
Work in progress
Always listen to Wardell’s stuff when he was with Benny Goodman’s outfit too. Such incredible solo work in a short period of time.
Slice of the top, is one of the greatest compositions of all time.
I missed this Brother while living in Long Beach in the 80's. I hit darn near every place that played Jazz including Concerts By The Sea in Redondo Beach, The Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach, Pasquales in Malibu, The Golden Bear in Huntington Beach, etc, etc. Somehow I missed Harold Land at a place called Hop Singhs in Marina Del Rey. I saw somewhere that he played there frequently. Can't believe I didn't get to see him.
@@howardrussell3919 yeah he was great. He played with my dad and recorded with him as well. Excellent player. Thanks for watching.
The Goat of bassists along with Blanton!
Thanks. Very informative
Hank has always been one of my favorites i have a lot of his music,,..sadly he is underrated or unknown to many,,. Peckin Time ; Soul Station oh yeah!!
The king.
Twiisted
Lots of references to Las Vegas mafia involvement in his death, some saying he was messing with the white GF/wife of a gangster. James Elroy's books mention this
love the jazz saxophone and I too think Hank Mobley was definitely the middle champion of bebop!......
He was great
Glad more attention has been given to greats like Terry Pollard. I’d also lump in Mary Lou Williams in there as well as one of the unsung bebop greats.
Would really like to know who's playing the beautifully, haunting piano piece in the background of this video. And it's title.
The song is Signal by jimmy Raney. My father, vibes player Charlie shoemake is playing the piano.
@BigOnBebop Thank you so much for responding. Thanks for introducing this song to me. I love it !
I was just about to leave a comment stating the name of the tune. "Signal" is a great jazz tune and I really like the very up-tempo version by Stan Getz, done live at "Storyville" in Boston, w Jimmy Raney on guitar. But the sedate version here is nice, too.
Thanks for this...Please keep up this exceptional context...You had mentioned the Los Angeles Central Ave. sound...This led me to purchase box sets from Mercury, Flair, Okeh, Specialty Records, and many others close to 35 years ago...I think it's the greatest music I've ever heard!..It's Jazzy, Bluesy, Swings, Jumps, Struts, and has given me countless hours of musical contentment...Kudo's keep it up!
MAX ROACH THE GREATEST🥁OF ALL TIMES🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁
Good profile but with one flaw... You mispronounce the last name of Dodo Marmarosa as if the last letter is an "o" and not an "a".
DICK GARCIA ...."A Message From Garcia" - Dawn. Paid $130 for it M- roun 92 .. how about ?
thx for posting. a great tenor player!!🙏
I read somewhere that Gray was in fact NOT an addict, that he was a mentor to other musicians in this respect. I can't remember where I read this. That he was found dead with a broken neck suggests that, just possibly, his death took place at a party where drugs were used, and that he was dumped in an attempt to keep the police from discovering what had happened, and where. It really looks as if we'll never know; and films like yours are essential in keeping his name from oblivion. I think that, although he clearly derived from Lester Young, he was an original (as was Zoot Sims) who should be on everyone's list of great jazz players. Beautiful music.
It’s important to include that Gray wrote “Twisted” made famous by Lambert, Hendricks, and Ross and then Joni Mitchell. Gray’s piece is an instrumental but lyrics were added later. The tenor work on it is phenomenal!
Thank you ❤
