Hiking the Coast to Coast - Part 2 (Kirkby Stephen to Robin Hoods Bay)
Kirkby Stephen to Robin Hoods Bay
Including a very wet and muddy Nine Standards Rigg!
Part 2 of my solo C2C adventure. A mix of camping, pubs, hostels and B&Bs.
I loved the Yorkshire Dales and the North Yorkshire Moors, a real sense of freedom and being away from it all. I met some great people along this stretch too. As you get further along the C2C you start to see the same folk every day - I loved the camaraderie, particularly meeting up at the Bay Hotel for a few pints in Robin Hoods Bay!

St Bees to Kirkby Stephen. I'm not a massive fan of heights so unlike the usual C2C videos this includes an alternative to the traditional Kidsty Pike route, via Ullswater, Pooley Bridge and Askham Fell Part 1 of my solo C2C adventure. A mix of camping, pubs, hostels and hotels.. Oh, and it rained, a lot… Don't forget to hit like and subscribe! Part 2 is out now.

Unfortunately most of the Rob Roy Way is miles to the east and the other side of the mountains from where Rob Roy lived and plied his cattle trade, yes he took cattle to the Draymen market but he wandered along the east side of Loch Lomond to Loch Katrine, had a house at the base of Ben Lomond, of which some remains are still visible.
Hello. My start was not rainy, but the rain came later as well... Scotland ;-)
Good job🎉
the lion inn! love that place. im From Middlesbrough myself so seeing you walk through my neck of the woods is great and aye the clevland hills are no joke! up and down like a washboard.
@@gobackhome2 yeah probably the toughest part of the whole C2C tbh! Loved the North York Moors though and the Lion Inn was on my ‘must go’ list.
Hi Rusty, great video. It's good to see someone making alternative routes as AW suggested. Can I ask which route you ended up taking from Rosthwaite to Grasmere? Atb Mark.
Cheers Mark. I took the Alby Williams route via Watendlath then across to pick up the road at Wythburn. The weather was so bad I'd have probably been better off going via Lining Crag tbh. Not my fav day as I recall!
@@RustyOutside thanks, and yes, you did get a fair bit of the wet stuff! Look forward to part 2.
Nice little video, I'm often up Odendale it's just over the back from the house, Westmorland Dales though not Yorkshire, not even in the National Park yet lol Yorkshire Dales are miles away yet beyond Kirby Stephen, lol Although few miles and you'll be in the National Park.
Hey Rusty, found you through your follow on Threads. Great to find another outdoor UA-camr. Looking forward to finding inspiration from your adventures! Been considering the coast to coast for a while now and this will be a great resource for me.
@@Simonjburgess cheers Simon. Def recommend the C2C, an experience of a lifetime for me👍
Did you book the hostels and B&B’s hotels etc or did you wing it. Really good video I’m off for my second crossing September.
@@DJVOutdoors cheers mate, I booked the hostel at Kirkby Stephen, New Ing lodge at Shap and then the Lion Inn at Blakely Ridge about 6 months before I went. The rest I winged or booked on route. Both the New Ing Lodge and Lion Inn get booked up pretty quickly. The hostel was a cheap option.
@@RustyOutside I was just going to camp at lion inn, take it you stayed in a room there?
@@DJVOutdoors yeah I did, only 1 tent in the garden as I recall.
@@RustyOutside Just seen your videos and I've noticed trying to book for next June is already becoming difficult with many places booked up already.
@@yorkshirewanderer6176 yeah it does seem to get really busy. I mixed it up with camping/hostels/b&bs. The Lion Inn I booked about 10 months in advance!
Nice one Rusty
Cheers Daz, the weather got better the further away I got from the Lakes! I'm actually quite tempted to do it again next year!
I can remember it rained non stop fpr me hoing through the lakes 😂 @RustyOutside
I carried my Mo on the Tamara Coast to Coast Way this past November, and I can tell you all of my things stayed dry without a pack cover, despite walking in November Cornwall/Devon rain. It's such a great pack!
@@aylagriffin3310 not risked mine w/o cover, too much at risk!
@@RustyOutside - I keep Hyperlite Packing cubes inside my pack so everything was protected. It was good to see how well the mo stood up though! No water ever made it into the Mo.
Thanks for sharing. From day 2 onward, how much water do you carry? Is water source easily available ? Cheers
@@donaldpang cheers, there’s a good water source about 3 miles from the car park at Beinn a M’headhoin where I filtered a couple of litres. That lasted me to Altbeithe hostel where the was ample. I took an extra empty bottle on this trip and filled up on days 3 and 4.
@@RustyOutside thank you very much
Thank you for sharing our RRW-Adventure with us. Seems you walked a bit earlier as I did End of April/Beginning of May 2024. Good to compare your experience with mine and to "see" the trail again. Great memories.
Cheers mate, will check out your channel 👍
@@RustyOutside Thx
Hi I'm gonna do this trail in 2 weeks! Great video and helps me to see that can camp discreetly near those loos. Its not a busy trail, did you see many others doing it?
Hi, yes the toilets were open all night. Didn’t see any campers overnight but the camp spot is out of sight of the car park. Good luck, it’s a fantastic walk!
Great video Rusty, I enjoyed that mate. You were fairly decent with the weather too. It may not be your favourite hike but it still looked a good one. Well done mate. John.
Cheers mate, tough on the feet this one. Never had so many blisters!!
Really informative. Thanks for the video and the tips
Cheers, appreciate it 👍
Hi, where did you get the closed foam mat from? Thanks Dave
Hi Dave, I got mine here: ultralightoutdoorgear.co.uk/featherweight-evazote-foam-mat/ Fabulous multi use bit of kit. Cheers
Good effort fellah, looked a tough mental grind after having falls and injuries.
Cheers mate, will be back to finish it at some point for sure 👍
Well done Rusty. Very inspiring. I go next week all being well.
Cheers mate, have a brilliant trip 👍
Fantastic walking it. This. Year. 2024.
Vertigo, a horrible sensation, possibly you are already doing something to help you, equalize your inner ear pressure, you wore earphones, try earplugs, look at your feet and nowhere else, worth a try, works for me.. And, yes, I'm in ur situation all the time, I cannot coastal walk.
Cheers. Yeah costal walking is not enjoyable for me either. I do feel more positive following this walk tho, felt like a bit of a turning point. 👍
This looks great and I'm planning on doing it end of July. Are there regular buses from Morvich to Fort William or Glasgow? Great video👍
Thanks very much for you kind comments, days 2 - 4 are spectacular, I loved it. From memory there are only 2 buses a day from Morvich to Fort William. I hadn’t realised I needed to prebook and nearly got caught out. Luckily I got to Cannich 3 hours before the bus was due so I was able to get a signal and book a ticket online.
I, too, suffer from acrophobia. Good job pushing through that tough bit, mate=) Sometimes you just have to show the fear who's boss.
Cheers mate. Will get there eventually 👍
Thanks for taking the time to put this together. I appreciate your thoughts on teh trail and how to deal with fear when you're on your own. Planning on doing teh trip in May next year. Take care
Thanks Jasmin. I loved the AKW, felt like i turned a corner dealing with heights. Definitely recommend this trail. Good luck.
Well done mate, good trail vid 👍 I did the GGW a couple of years ago and my own videos. Just subbed 👍 Justin
Cheers Justin. I really enjoyed the GGW, met some great folk along the way too. Been catching up on your Rob Roy hike - def on my list this one. 👍
Im just sitting watching your vlog , can i ask you ..how was the walk from Cannich campsite to Dog falls?
Cheers for watching. It was quite a stretch as I recall, a few high bits that I wasn’t great with. Apparently the road route isn’t much easier.
@@RustyOutside cheers Rusty we were gonny walk to dog falls from there but if its a bit of a trek then we'll probably take the van
Nice one Rusty. We’re hopefully going to cycle the route in a couple of weeks time. ATB D&L 😊
Cheers. The stretch into glen affric is something else. Have a great time.
If you did this trail again would you skip to Cannich? I’ve done this trail twice but always just started in Cannich both times so I’m interested in what other people think
I would definitely start at Drumnadrochit. Not completed the whole trail otherwise 👍
Hey I'm gonna hope to start at Cannich as I'm new to thru hikes and want to relax on the spectacular bits! I don't even know yet how to get there from Inverness but will try to get a bus. I like your attitude, do the best bits if you want, I planned that after watching bored man outdoors do this trail.
@@Chilternwildcamper jsut get a bus to drumnadrochit and then a bus to cannich
Good video. Good pack weight makes me jealous. Need to rethink my kit again. The sleep kit looks the business and well, you know my view on the tent. I bought one !
Cheers Paul, love the Durston!
I did this trail a couple of years ago as you say the first day is a bit of a slog but the next three are great and after racing from the bothy had to wait ages for the bus as the Times has changed
Yeah the bus was a bit of a pain for me too. I hadn't realised I needed to book in advance. Luckily I got to Morvich and got a signal about 4 hours before it was due, so I was able to go online and book a place and then sat in the cafe and waited!
Hi, I'm gonna do this in a couple of weeks hoping by bus from Inverness, its bus times that I'm most worried about lol. How do I even find the timetables? I'm also wanting to spend my first ever night in a.bothy!
@RustyOutside hi, do you remember what the bus website was? Thanks ... am worried about the buses but OK with the isolation as just ordered a garmin thingy just to be safe.... no phone signal for much of that trail did that bother you?
Always interesting to me to see what other backpackers take on the trail. I like the look of that sleep pad looks really comfortable. Cool pool table too! 👍🍺
Cheers mate, absolutely love the Big Agnes. It’s a keeper!
This looks like a great adventure Rusty! Scotland is an amazing place for hikers. Great filming mate, the scenery out there looks unreal and even more atmospheric when it rains, even if that can be a hassle ;)
Cheers. Loved the last 2 days - scenery was just amazing.
Brilliant video, great start to the Cumbria Way. Breakfast of champions at the yha. I hope you treated yourself to a pint with your tenner. I'll be watching the other parts tomorrow. ATB Dan 👍 👍 👍 👍
Cheers mate, really liked the CW (apart from the lack of trail markers), def a tough one though.
😜 Promo`SM
Great effort on that one. No worries about not finishing. Live to fight another day. Hope you had a nice pint and meal in the pub at the end. Best wishes on the next.
Cheers mate, will be back to finish it for sure.
I really feel for you Rusty. I know exactly how you are feeling. I started the CWT last month. Had a fall on day three. Soldiered on with painkillers. Tapped out on day six at around 80ish miles. I admire your honesty putting the video out mate. I have my video to do when I get back from holiday. Another fail.
Cheers mate, sorry to hear about the CWT especially with all the prep that must’ve gone into it. I will go back and finish the SW at some point. I’ve got the Affric Kintail way coming up next month and I’ve added an extra day to my itinerary so I’m as rushed as I was with this one.
excellent video i did this trip and it was way too hot ua-cam.com/video/l0iGWxqpvjw/v-deo.html
Great vid. I think this will be our next long distance walk for 2023. Cannot beat the wild camping in Scotland! 👍
Thanks mate, much appreciated. I loved the GGW, not as busy as the WHW but i still met some great people along the way. Wild camp spots aplenty too!
Brilliant mate. Makes me want to go back and do it all again.
Cheers mate, watching your vid i can see exactly where i went wrong just before the climb up Stake Pass! Much easier on a path!
I really enjoyed that Rusty. A hike that I will definitely do at some point. On the whole, cracking weather showing the landscape in full summer clothing. Looking forward to your next adventure.
Thanks mate, much appreciated. Enjoyed it very much. Where are you heading off to next?
I'm not too sure at the moment. Probably shorter local walks due to our house extension starting in a few weeks. My next big one will probably be next year. I am really fancying the Cape Wrath Trail.
@@thunder_roaming Good luck - that's a tough one!
Cheers Rusty. Do you have anything else in the pipeline?
@@thunder_roaming Affric Kintail is on the list but it’s a bit short so I might join it up with another Scottish trail. Got a germ of an idea to create my own 100 mile trail at some point. Will see!
Nice one rusty a great walk in the bag was nice to see you had a hiking buddy 🐛 caldbeck has changed so much since I was there and I thought the last day to Carlisle wasn't that bad at least it didn't rain one that day 😀 atb daz
Cheers Daz. Caldbeck was great, new showers & toilet block. £5 a night - bargain!
Cracking mate 👍 looking forward to it
Cheers mate. Good luck 👍
Well done mate! You certainly had much better weather than me over Stake Pass. Did you visit Keswick Brewery whilst you were in Keswick? Amazing beers!
Cheers mate, I was very lucky to have dry weather for the first 4 days, wouldn't fancy stake pass in the rain that's for sure. Didn't go anywhere other than pub in Keswick! One for next time perhaps...
That's a great start to your hike. A free tenner and sunny weather. Looking forward to the rest of the journey. This is definitely one I need to do at some point. I've really enjoyed your other vlogs too.
Cheers mate, thanks very much. It’s a great trail, tough in places but I really enjoyed it.
Great first couple of days money comes to money they say 😉 was nice to see the scenery without the rain i had. How you finding the new atom pack atb daz
I was certainly v lucky with the weather (until the last day…). Loving the Atom Pack - game changer. What about yours?
@@RustyOutside I love mine also thinking about getting another one 😉
@@dazbass007 another one...?! I went for the Mo 50L - gives me the extra space if i need it. V happy with it so far.
@@RustyOutside yea ive had this a few years now might get one for next year got a few plans 😁😉 the mo 50 is a popular pack im trying to go smaller so i don't pack so much 🤣🤣
@@dazbass007 i was tossing up between the 40 v 50. The 50 is literally just a little bit higher so when I'm not using the full capacity i can roll it down to a 40 which is great.
Nice video mate. It's great to see the route from another pair of eyes...so to speak. When did you do it? I started on the 4th July. Hoping to get my video online soon(ish). Can't believe how quiet Tarn Hows was for you. It was rammed when I was there.
Cheers mate. i was at Tarn Hows at 8am ish but it was still quieter than I thought. I did it 11th-15th July and bar the last day, had dry weather throughout. I don't know about you but I found a couple of the climbs tough going, particularly from the old mine up to Lingy Hut on day 4. I'll keep an eye for your vids.
@@RustyOutside Yeah, going up to High Pike wasn't pleasant at all. The day I did it, there was cloud cover on the mountain and I've never been in such windy conditions. The path seemed non existent for the most part up to Lingy Hut and was so boggy in places. I wasn't expecting it to be quite so hard going. My original plan was to wild camp on High Pike, but had to abort that and go to the campsite on Caldbeck.
Looks like a great walk.
Cheers - loved it.
Nice video that. That climb out of Drum, sure does seem to never end. Enjoyed watching
Cheers mate, it was a bit of a slog at the end of the day that's for sure!
A great hike Rusty 😉 where you off next 😀
