Birding Bodega Bay
Переглядів 236Місяць тому
Seabird nesting season has got off to a late start in Bodega Bay, but the Murres, Gulls and Brandt's Cormorants at the Head are getting busy. The Oystercatchers have claimed their territory, but don't seem to be sitting on eggs just yet. The Pelagic Cormorants are conspicuously missing, perhaps dissuaded by the road grading project. There are a few surprise birds in the area right now: A Wander...
American Kestrel deconstructs a rodent

Mrs. Kestrel prefers her rodents with as little fur as possible. Not only does she try to remove as much fur as she can, she also doesn't have much of a taste for rodent intestines.
Downy Woodpecker steals Bewick's Wren nest
Переглядів 83 місяці тому
I heard a commotion and noticed a Bewick's Wren by the oak tree. She was very upset because a Downy Woodpecker had moved into her nest site. The Downy was vigorously defending the site and pushing out the sticks the Bewick's Wren had put in the nest. The happy news for the Bewick's is that she was able to reclaim her nest the following day.
Elephant Seal pup tickle time

Elephant Seal babies like to play with their flippers. They tickle and chew them, and always seem to be moving them. Here is some Elephant Seal pup cuteness. Enjoy.
Elephant Seal pups share a mom.
Переглядів 1,2 тис.6 місяців тому
Elephant Seals mothers have one pup, but sometimes the mother and pup become separated. The lost pup then latches on to a different mother and competes with her pup to nurse. If the pups are lucky, the lost pup relocates its mother. If not, then the two pups get half the nutrition they need to survive.
Genghis Can Do Anything...with a little help

This Great Horned Owlet showed huge promise from the beginning. When in the nest, he stole food from his mother, and dominated his sibling. He was the first owlet out of the nest and in a matter of days he was flying. But something happened. His parents and sibling mysteriously disappeared and he was left to fend for himself. He watched hungrily as the Barn Owl babies were being fed, and he con...
Point Reyes Pelican Party!

Everyone who was anyone was at the beach today. There must have been a huge bait ball, because there were hundreds of Brown Pelicans, Heermann's Gulls, some Double-crested Cormorants, Loons, Surf Scoters, and others, all diving for a meal.
That's how my day went

Back in August, I went to the Head to do breeding bird counts, but it was so foggy all I saw was this Harbour Seal.

It was a windy, foggy day at the Head, but I braved the weather for a few minutes to watch the Pelagic Cormorant babies get a meal.
One of the Osprey kids gets a meal
Переглядів 2411 місяців тому
The Osprey kids are growing up. They fledged almost two weeks ago, but they don't know how to hunt, and are still being fed by their parents. Mom Osprey is very protective, and goes after pelicans and gulls daily they get too close to a tempting fish dinner in the Osprey nest at their peril. The Osprey kids spend their days eating, screaming for food, and flying in circles around the nest area,...

Baby season is in full swing at Bodega Head. The Pelagic Cormorants have returned to the cliff face (after an unfortunate drone incident several years ago), and the Brandt's Cormorants are back on Bodega Head in numbers. Western Gulls have spread out from the Head to the surrounding rocks, and Common Murres have begun to populate the back of the Head, competing for space with the Brandt's Cormo...
2023_05_23 Bodega Rock

It wasn't ideal weather for video, but I braved the high winds and harsh light and here is the result. There was lots of action on the Rock today. Apparently seaweed is in high demand, and the Brandt's Cormorants had to walk gauntlets of thieving compatriots to bring it to their nest. There were isolated violent fights in the Common Murre territory, and a lot of gratuitous poking in various dir...
Pre-nesting Pigeon Guillemots
Переглядів 99Рік тому
The 2023 spring nesting season has been slow, perhaps because of the inclement weather. But during today's count at Bodega Head, there was one Western Gull on a nest (fashionably wearing some nesting material), there were Common Murres on the back of the Head, and three pairs of Pigeon Guillemots put dibs on nesting locations or prospected for property. Breeding Pigeon Guillemots have the styli...
2023 Great Horned Owls' nest
Переглядів 236Рік тому
The kids are getting bigger. Mom doesn't spend much time in the nest anymore, but does chop up the food for them. There is a rat's nest about 20' up from the owl nest, which makes grabbing dinner very convenient. Although tonight's dinner was rat, it appears that the babies previously dined on crow, judging by the feathers that were flying around during flapping sessions.

The nesting process is fascinating. I thought I was picky about what I sat on! 😂 that nest looks like it will be very comfy. ❤bald eagles?!
The eagles have been nesting at the bay for a few years now 🙂

Certainly! Human children do the same thing: play with their hands when they are bored!

Nice. Life in the wild that Bobcat caught a nice snack. It worked for it.
He/she (as the case may be) is being so soft and curious, as if asking "is anyone ele up yet?.". ❤
Amazing😮 such a beautiful voice
Woah. That was incredible to watch. Bobcat so stealthy and patient. 😮
What great footage! 😮😊
What a beautiful, mysterious and meditative act of nature. ❤
mesmerising
Do they ever collide?
Not that I can tell. Apparently each bird pays close attention to the 7 or 8 birds closest to it and moves with them. Multiply that by 50,000 and you have a starling murmuration. It's amazing!
Sweet clip

What a good Mom and Dad taking care of their family!
Funny, how much Great Horned look like Little Owls, if take the horns away! Same facial expressions and actions. Those frowny hairy eyebrows, and very bright eyes.
What a great face she has, and very interactive with her babies!
