Приєднався 13 жов 2016
Welcome to the Red Spirit Mask Channel. On this channel we will be discussing and creating art often with an emphasis on Africa and other cultures. We will also have videos about video games, movies and other media and will look at these subjects through the lens of art and culture.
For video games, you can expect a lot of Zelda talk. I'm a huge fan of the Legend of Zelda and we have a whole series dedicated to the Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask called Majora's Mask Remodeled. For movies, we have a big focus on the Black Panther. Black Panther is a great fusion of the super hero genre with African culture and I enjoy talking about the African aspects of it.
So if you like painting, video games, super heroes, and learning about the world, you've come to the right place. Hope you enjoy the videos, my friends.

What do you mean shes Kenyan I thought she was Afro-Brazilian with all the clips ive seen her doing capoiera
Unless Capcom has retconned things, she has always been from Kenya. They gave her capoiera because the folks at Capcom were not knowledgeable of traditional African forms of fighting. I am still happy that Elena exists as a character, I just wanted to suggest ways they could improve her.
@redspiritmask I never played the games. Just watched movies and shows of Streets I've only ever seen Elena through gifs on Pinterest or something so like you said in the video her design doesn't do much But yeah that was essentially my reaction throughout the video, "What do you mean she's Kenyan?!!" Good video though
@@afrolens9532 Thanks! And if you're curious, there are some Brazilians in Street Fighter: Sean, Laura, and Blanka.
Tchad by culture and history belongs to West Africa or Bilâa as Sudan
Yeah I understand that perspective and that's why these sorts of things are debatable. At the end of the day, we are all just coming up with imagined boundaries. As for me, though I do keep culture in mind, which is why I have Sudan (a country with close ties to Egypt) as part of the North and not East. I'm looking at Chad more from a geographical viewpoint, the country is very much in the center of the continent.
@redspiritmask This is your perspective Do you know what's mean "the Sahelian Band"?
Tchad culture doesn't belong to WA. Its more like culture from the horn of africa and north africa. They speak arab there
@africaine4889 They speak Arab does not mean they are Arabs like Sudanese Also Nigerians and Ghanaians speak English but they are not English There was Kanem Bornu Kingdom in Tchad in Middle Age or not? From Atlantic coast to Tchad as know like Sahelian Band of Africa where flourished great civilisations like Hausa Kingdom,Kanem Bornu,Mali Empire, Ghana There are tribes Fulani ,Hausa like in Nigeria,Niger or North Cameroon Tchad is the link West Africa and Sudan
I think her new design is more of an ode to her fighting style, capoeira than her ethnic heritage
That could certainly be the case.
I came across your videos a few years ago, trying to do research and study African culture as a Black American man, trying to learn about my history and roots and I'm also in the process of making a comic and eventually an animation based on African history all throughout the continent, since there's not many comics/animations out there on Africa, but like I was saying, I came across your videos awhile back and I always found them to be very interesting, but unfortunately I lost my older account, so I decided to find your channel again and thankfully I did. But, I just wanted to say that I really appreciate you for informing and letting people know who aren't informed about Africa, the beauty, diversity, architecture and its culture that isn't really talked about as often as European or Asian architecture and its culture. Africa as a whole needs to be talked about more, appreciated and respected much more since it's the longest history and it is world history in general since the first humans originate in Africa and it's the origin of all mankind. Plus, it's extremely underrated. But, keep doing what you do, family! I'll be looking out for new videos!
Thank you very much! I hope your comic and animations are successful. When you are done with them let me know. I'd be interested in seeing how they turn out.
@@redspiritmask Will do!
Thank you for mentioning exploitation and neocolonialism. Not enough people talk about this.
Yeah many people don't seem to understand how the West continues to have negative impacts on Africa.
@@redspiritmask I definitely agree. It's frustrating.
This is an awesome idea for a video! Nice!
I'm glad you like it, Ken! :D
Looking forward to the rest of this series
Nice! 😁
Good start 😇
Thank you! 🤗
Elena is mixed Black and white. she is not 100 % Kenyan.
The studio that made this animation is called Mind’s Eye creative. They have done stuff for Nickelodeon and Netflix and they recently released a show called Twende
her original better be a costume
It probably will. I think the other characters have alts that feature their OG costumes.
The Indonesian or Malay sailors who arrived on Madagascar by accident were probably all men. But they could have found African women either on the island itself or on the nearby mainland, and that could be why the Malagasy are a combination of both groups.
Excellent video! Thanks!
They wear jeans t-shirts and adidas in Kenya.
Smooth brain comment. Has nothing to do with Kenyan culture since that's Western culture.
Not all so-called blacks are from african and black is a color not a nationality that is a label that the slave master made up. Ppl should do study culture. The so-called crayons that went into slavery are Isrealites not african continent .
If Capcom listens to you, the character sells will be like 20
love african masks and lol at slayers manga reference
Nice! Unless I forgot something, I think you're the first person to comment on the Slayers reference. Always happy to see someone recognize my obscure references.
maybe dhalsim is based on aghori sect
True the Aghori are interesting sect of the Hindu religion which do use human bones in their rituals. That said I feel like if that was the case, it would have mentioned it in the interview I read. But also they are a very small portion of people in India. On every continent you can find some rare uses of human bones in ritual and art here and there. For example, here an example from France: www.catacombes.paris.fr/en/history/site-history But, when you think of France you don't think of that. Frankly, I do like weirdos in games but having the only representative of India one of the most populated place on earth being Dhalsim is not a good look. If Street Fighter had more characters from India then I could see Dhalsim's skull thing being more acceptable since you could show a range of diverse Indian characters. Darun Mister by the way is not technically owned by Capcom and to be frank I forgot he existed till just now. But yeah if they had more normal looking Indian characters like him in Street Fighter than in that case having someone based on something extreme like the Aghori would be fine because they would no longer bare the weight of being India's only representation. That said in Street Fighter 6 Dhalsim has a new necklace made of metal. If I forgot to mention that in this video I apologize but yeah my point is Capcom has over the years been trying to update Dhalsim's design to be less controversial. So thats a good thing and I probably should have said that in the video but when you're trying to make videos once a month some things slip your mind.
The thumbnail had me worried. A lot of "redesigns" take this weird racial purity angle which I am not comfortable with. Especially in Elena's case where the white hair is necessary for contrast in the game (look at Johnny World tour I cant make out half the emotes he is in) and her blue eyes for her being literally blue eyed aka naive. But mostly talking about fashion and inspirations Capcom can use to depict her more grounded in the setting was a very pleasent and welcome surprise!
Glad you enjoyed the video! :D And yeah I love Elena's character, I just wanted to point out ways that Capcom could improve her design.
That writing script is Nsibidi of the Ejagham people. Y’all should learn to tell the truth always. Ejagham Ngbe is the origin of the leopard as king and origin of the Pantheon.
Its been years but I'm pretty sure I do talk about Nsibidi in this video. Did you watch the whole thing?
Sao Tome, Idjwi.
Can't wait for my main :<
Love the channel
Thanks Jashard! I always appreciate hearing from you. Hopefully the sequel to this video won't take me too long to make. I got most of the script done, still a few more countries to write about.
The new design of Elena is so beautiful, she will be one of the beautiful female characters in this game.
I love her outfit too. I don’t see why the hate
Can you do a vid on african cryptids or monsters?
I have been wanting to do a video about African monsters so there is a good chance that will be a thing one day. However in my mind cryptids and monsters are different. Cryptids to me tend to be more urban legend. For me I would make a monster video based on traditional monsters I've learned about from folktales, legends, art, masquerades, and other older cultural sources.
Hope you enjoy this look into modern Africa. Our focus on the channel tends to be on the more traditional aspects of African history but I think its a good idea to show modern Africa from time to time. And as I said at the end of the video, since this was focused on island nations we didn't get into non-independent islands like Zanzibar, the Bijagós, and etc. That said, theres a good chance I will talk about those in future videos.
🌍
🤗
I just feel like new Elena design. It just represent that she gone world wide now, And maybe she go to different place,Maybe she go to Brazil, learns a new thing. she grows up. And that why she start to wear a new clothes like that. maybe It's not fully represent their country. But She is free. wearing something universality maybe it a good for living in new era
Blonde blue-eyed
Ashé. 💖 Thank you for this. 💖
Glad you liked it. I probably should do more proverb videos eventually but I might not always do them as UA-cam Shorts since so far the Shorts aren't getting much views.
Elana and menat are only Afrcan women fighters in Sf,
Yeah there really should be more African representation.
@@redspiritmask so true , I’m Eritrean American but I would love to see a somali fighter
Elena was meant to be a character from Brazil at first in SF3 New Generation, but sundently Capcom changed her nacionality before game release, this is why Elena color skin is like that. Also remember, Sean in SF3 New Generation is from USA, but in SF3 Second Impact Giant Attack, Capcom changed him to be a Brazil character. Don't worry with Elena in SF6 because there will be more color options to pick up
This makes so much sense
There are all colours of many kinds of people. Keeping it white and black is just wrong. People from Africa from ancient times to now have been white. It's absolutely appropriate. Media convinces people that everyone in Africa have only been black. Just as they convince people that Mexicans are only brown- even though I have pure blood cousins that are white as snow. White, brown, dark brown, red. All people around the world have many skin colours that are the same, it's only the land that divides us. A shame, really, to let where a person be born separate us. Don't misunderstand either- be proud, but be so together.
Disgusting and disrespectful presentation.
I’m guessing the cliffhanger missing item is lavatories?
Did they use great sword like the German zwiehander or Japanese nodachi ?
There are some larger swords in Africa I will show some of those in the future when I talk about Cameroon and Chad.
Interesting
Thanks! :D
nice! i'm convinced games were very important to human history so it's always great to learn more about them from other cultures and times. another one i know is the ancient egyptian senet game. oh and you really got me with sonic, thought it was real till i looked up the logo ^^.
Yeah at some point I'd like to do videos on Senet and other Egyptian games. As, for how I did that Sonic image, I took an image of the undecorated backside of an Abbia token and then made a new layer in GIMP and pasted the Sonic and Knuckles logo on as an Overlay layer. Then manipulated the colors and cleaned up certain areas.
I am 70% Indonesian Malaysia Chinese Kamboscha philipine Thailand vietnam 20% North African, West African, Kenia, Seria Leone 5% England and Middle East I am a true Malagasy thanks to Indonesia
to be fair some one coming at you with that smiling mask with a spear in hand would be terrifying
Your idea is plausible, however I would need to see more evidence to be convinced that this mask is a Sso Mask. Considering that the mask in question is also titled HEALED MASK I find it unlikely that it was intended to scare people. But for sake of argument we could hypothesize that perhaps this mask appears after all the scary masks have done their part in the masquerade, and the role of this mask would be to conclude the ceremony in a healing way. Again though that's just speculation. I will also note that I am aware of a scary smiling mask in the Congo but thats far away and it's smile is noticeably large and creepy. I may do a video about that Hemba mask of the Congo in the future. Thank you for you sharing your thoughts.
Given how many fakes I've seen in my own collecting hobby, I would not trust most auction house experts.
Yeah, I recall watching an auction house show many years ago and an expert looked at some objects that looked like they were from the Cameroon Grassland Kingdoms and the guy claimed they were from the Benin Kingdom. There is a huge difference in style between those cultures artworks. So, I was really annoyed by that misidentification.
🗿👍
👹✌️
Great video. I never knew about this. It's always cool to learn about historical African games and sports as they've mostly been replaced by Western varieties.
Yep, I plan to talk about more traditional games in the future. Surprisingly, I still haven't made a video about Mancala/Oware/Awale. I really should get on that.
Excellent content. You are appreciated.
And I appreciate you! Thanks for your comment :D
Add a super thanks to your channel. You are by far one of the best youtubers in history.
You really should. There's no reason not to.
Thank you very much it means a lot to me that you hold my channel in high regard. Since you mentioned the Super Thanks option, I did just now look into that. From what I read, like with the normal monetization on UA-cam of Ads, I have to reach certain requirements for UA-cam to allow me to utilize Super Thanks. I've already met the amount of Subscribers needed but apparently I don't have enough watch time yet. They require 3000 hours of watch time each year. I'm close to that but not there yet. I'm sure I'll get there eventually, and when I do, I add the Super Thanks button like you recommended.
I read the thumbnail as "Lose this game, lose your life" at first and was like "Yup that sounds pretty dangerous" lmao
lol well there is an old game that fits that description, its called Russian Roulette.
LMAO Sonic fanart xD
Glad you liked my little Sonic joke :D
I havent found any traditional sub-saharan african sports that arent dancing or fighting, maybe im not looking hard enough?
Well awalé literally still exists, so you're definitely not looking hard enough :v
You’re definitely not researching hard enough. There are chess games like Bornu chess (Tsatsarandi) and Boa board games as well as Ethiopian chess along with others like surfing and swimming.
Archery practice is a traditional sport among a number of Africans. I read of some other traditional games/sports too that I may eventually do videos for. Theres this competion I recall researching but can't recall which culture it was for but it involved young men racing to see who could harvest crops the fastest and they won a cool trophy like staff.
Bro there's literal donkey racing in East Africa
i swear to god humans are going to human always
