We are a family owned and operated drainage and landscaping company. Dawn and I do all the work ourselves. Occasionally, our two sons - Nick & Andy give us a hand. We try to solve our customers problems to make their home more usable, colorful and inviting. We specialize in innovative ways to solve rainwater drainage problems in areas where you cannot discharge to the street. We install Dawn's custom, colorful, but low maintenance landscape designs. We operate in and around Old Bridge and East Brunswick, New Jersey. Thank you for watching our videos, Tom
Town's Stormwater Culvert Pipe Floods Homeowner's Yard - Part 2
This homeowner bought this beautiful home back in the mid 80's. He didn't know there was a well camouflaged culvert pipe behind his property. The discharge was hidden by overgrown trees and brush. In the past he only got water when there was a heavy rain. After he complained numerous times the town came and put down the rip rap. Which only slowed the water down and spread it out over a larger area. After the rip rap was installed he started getting water in his pool area and washing out the landscaping there, but the town considered that a fix. Recently, the neighbor across the street cleared the woods in their front yard and installed a lawn. Now every time they irrigate their lawn our customer's lawn get saturated. In this video we finish the rip rap channel, install the rest of the pipe and the second catch basin. We work around the fence and some electrical lines. We rock around the first catch basin / dry well, we put down new sod and show it working while raining. Part 3 coming soon. Thank you for watching our family working together.

We've worked for this nice family before. They're widening their driveway to add a parking space and they would like a downspout run to the curb before the concrete is poured. They could let it discharge onto the new driveway, but then it may freeze in the winter. This town allows downspouts to be run to the street and coring the curb with a road opening permit. Much faster to use a block cutter. I had to do that to some bricks after i ran out of gas in saw. Forgot how long it took. Lol
I agree Wilson. I only had to splitface 6 pieces. That wasn’t worth the hundred dollar rental fee, so I used my trusty chisel. Have a good day, Tom
just sue the township for flooding property
The homeowner tried to pursue legal action against the town, but he couldn’t get any local lawyers to take the case. All the local lawyers wouldn't go against the town, or they said they had some kind of conflict. He decided suing the town was a gamble. He could spend much more than he’s paying us, still loose and be back at square one. Thanks again, Tom
Can you provide links to the materials used?..............like the basin, the rubber gaskets for the pipes entering the basin, the lid to the basin, what type and size of discharge pipe?, what type and size of green drain pipe from catch basin to sump basin? Where do you purchase these things? thank you!!
Hello Blaster. We purchase almost everything from our local plumbing supplier. Jackel makes the basin, lid and grommets - jackel.com/ The fiberglass basin is 24x48 with anti-flotation. The catch basin is Polylok. I buy them from amazon or www.zabelenvironmental.com/ We use their 12, 20 & 24 inch basins with risers. Green pipe is 4" SDR35, discharge is 1-1/2" Sch40. All purchased from the same plumbing supplier, but you can buy from Lowes. I hope this helps, Tom
Another beautiful job. I love your ideas with different rock types. almost every stone placed by hand. Perfectionism is right up my alley and that’s what you guys do! Like I’ve said I should have studied Civil Engineering in school! Hopefully you’ll have a part 3 once the town gets their part completed….lol! Take care and Happy Thanksgiving from North Carolina!
Thank you Jim. You always give us the nicest compliments and we look forward to your comments. There will be a pt3. Thanks again and Happy Thanksgiving
Love watching your practical approach to solving problems that would make the rest of us crazy. Really enjoy the videos.
Thanks so much Sean. We’re glad to hear that you enjoyed it. Have a good evening, Tom
I do not understand why you put a catch basen for the water to bubble up out of right next to the house. Won't that eventually cause water damage to the house foundation? If they have a basement, that would be even worse.
Heather, you must have missed where we said that this was a temporary bubbler while we wait for the town to install their inlet. Once the town does their work we run another 80 feet of pipe and we will change the grated lid to a solid lid. The rain runoff will then go to the city infrastructure - 38:50
I think digging that area out and turning it into a pond to attract wildlife would have made the neighbor across the street have a fit. Then have a lined river rock overflow going through the yard to the other street to top it off. And top it off with shrubs to block the neighbors view of it.
Very nice Eric
The neighbor watering all night long sounds like they did it on purpose especially with yall working there and sounds like a waist of water.
Thank you Matthew. We got it done anyway. I hope you can watch pt2.
Great work!!!
Thanks, we appreciate it. Have a good day, Tom
16:26 I wonder if those wires had enough slack in them, to re-bury them a little deeper, to achieve that 4% slope.
No, we tried. No slack at all. I did push down real good with the mini. That may have gotten us a little. Thanks again, Tom
I'm very impressed with your professionalism!
Thank you very much Alexei. You’re awesome.
It's terrible that the town won't let you tie into the existing culvert. This make the possible solutions so much more difficult and more prone to failure!
Very true Alexei. Wait until you see the way the town is letting us tie into their infrastructure. That will be in pt3. Thanks
I'm going to hazard a guess and say that the culvert was there before the house was built and even then it wasn't a problem until that pool area was built which massively reduced the surface area for the water to spread out and soak into the ground
That’s exactly right Sanguine. Thanks
If there is an official DROUGHT, surely even bringing a sprinkler outside let alone plumbing it and using it, should mean prison.
We are under fire restrictions, but no watering or water restrictions.
That clay, instead of the sand expected is also WHY it is such a river down the hill. Clay will not let anything trough to the ground water system.
Absolutely true Claudia. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and have a good day, Tom

Just so you know, there is a difference when they dry well catch bases
Thank you CC. I believe they can function as both dry well and catch basin, or hybrid system. Catch basin for the heavier rain events and dry well to percolate small rains and runoff from the neighbor's irrigation. When there is more water than can dissipate it raises up and then goes down the pipe. I use this method on many of your systems. If you watch pt2 you will see we have stone the entire length of the pipe. This also allows some of the water to percolate back into the ground. I like when we can send some of this water back down to help recharge the aquifer. Tom
Great job , love watching you guys . Masters at work for sure .
Thank you so much Rick. Enjoy the rest of your weekend, Tom
Who’s the idiot that decided hey let’s put a covet that ends and runs in to someone’s yard the homeowner should have gone to court to get it straightened out because that’s slowly eroding everything.
We haven’t meet that person yet Blake. And, this isn’t the only house on this street with the same issue. This homeowner’s problem became much worse when they cleared the property across the street. Enjoy the rest of your weekend, Tom
Why don't you use cloth to wrap your gravel? It will keep the majority of mud and dirt from clogging the gravel. In the PNW we do this to keep the gravel clean and the pipe from getting clogged with dirt and mud.
Swede, this isn’t a French drain and the pipe isn’t perforated. It can leach water and be like a French drain, but we used the stone to easily fill the voids around the pipe and for quick compaction. The stone won’t settle, like soil can, and we do need to worry about a call back. We do wrap our French drains and 3/4 wrap our leach fields/trenches and dry wells. I hope I answered your question.
I hope that you are going to be visiting this project again and video it.
Hi William. We still have another 80 feet of pipe to lay plus the city tie in. We’re waiting for the town to install an inlet by the street. So, we’ll definitely be back and filming a part 3. Thanks again, Tom
@tyelandscapinganddrainage I'm looking forward to seeing how it works out..
Thanks again William. Someone just needs to get the town motivated. We’re hoping to complete this before winter. Fingers crossed. Have a good weekend

Lots of good B26 content in this one for my tractor goal of next year! lol I don't know if the plywood wears out fast for you guys on these jobs from the moisture in the ground or if it lasts long but we use plastic ground mats where I work for ground protection. I don't know how they line up cost wise they're probably expensive but they are very durable. They've been using the same ones they already had for the 7 years I've worked there for their track loader and mini.
Thank you Elemento. It's always nice when we have enough access that we can use the B26. We bought it in 08 and it has worked flawlessly and without one issue - knock on wood - lol. I just replaced the factory battery this year. When you get your B26 I think you will be very happy with your purchase. Those mats are sweet and much better, but I prefer the 1/2 inch plywood. They're light and easy to move around, the mats are around 100 lbs. Plywood costs 25-40 bucks, mats are over $200. The plywood usually last 2-3 years. When they get bad I cut them up for some other use. Thank you for sharing your insights and have a great weekend, Tom

Stig, hello from New Jersey. Thank you very much for your spectacular comment. Have a great day, Tom
Super nice work, good editinqg .Thanks, I learned a lot
Thank you David. You're awesome.
5:00 You seriously need a rake. The shovel isn't the right tool to level things. 10:50 I don't know what the requirements are in your area, but around where I live, they bed the pipe with stone and backfill with dirt. They wouldn't bother with the membrane on top. In my area, we've got thaw and frost. For that reason, it is preferable to prevent water from going under the pipe. Thaw and frost can generate more than enough force to pop a pipe right out of the ground. This is especially true with double walled pipes since they have air in that gap between the 2 walls. The one big exception to that is farm tiles that are meant to catch water. Another thing to consider is that stone ain't cheap. It is always cheaper to backfill with the dirt that you have. It eats up into your profits. 38:19 You can see it very clearly in that shot. Your water is going down before it ever gets anywhere near that catch bassin. It isn't using your pipe. It is going through the rock that you placed around the pipe and exiting up front by pushing through the dirt around your second catch bassin. You can see it bubbling up at 39:16. That's what it looks like when water is under pressure and being pushed out of the ground.
Thank you for sharing your insights Jonathan. Have a good weekend
Like it was always there, lol. Just wave your magic wand..
Thank you Nic. You’re awesome.
OUTSTANDING 👌👌

SO HOMEOWNER BUILT OR BOUGHT A HOUSE WITH A DRY CREEK RUNNING THRU THE YARD. WHO GAVE THEM THAT PERMIT TO BUILD?
Diego, we believe the culvert was there before this development was built, but there’s no way to know for sure. The culvert was definitely there before this homeowner bought the house, and he purchased the house 2 years after it was built in the early 80’s. I don't know how a town engineer would approve building this home and another with a culvert just like it a couple doors down. When this homeowner bought the house it was very overgrown in the back and he couldn't see the culvert. Once again, this was the early 80's
@@tyelandscapinganddrainage then the last owner is legally liable for not telling the new owner, there is always someone that can get sued. unless the new owner changed something. like the pitch or filling in a creek bed. thanks for the response.
You're right Diego. The only thing that changed was the neighbor across the street removing all their trees, in the front yard, and installing a well irrigated lawn. Pt2 is up if you're interested. Have a good weekend, Tom
Another amazing job Tye Team! BTW I believe putting concrete into gate posts is common practice. I'm not a fence installer but my gate posts also have concrete in them.
Thank you very much Lee. I guess we’ve never tried to remove the panel next to the gate before. It does make perfect sense, but a little inconvenient for us. It all worked out. Thanks again and have a great weekend, Tom
Drives me absolutely nuts every time this guy gets off the mini ex and leaves the bucket in the air. Put it on the damn ground. Huge osha violation too. Grr
I’ve never heard of that rule.
@ not a rule, it’s a law. 1926.600(a)(3)(i) Excavator, Bulldozer and scraper blades, end-loader buckets, dump bodies, and similar equipment, shall be either fully lowered or blocked when being repaired or when not in use. All controls shall be in a neutral position, with the motors stopped and brakes set, unless work being performed requires otherwise.
I found this - However, OSHA does not have jurisdiction over federal agencies, state, and local governments, those that are self-employed, farmers that only employ immediate family members, and employers of non-employees.
@@tyelandscapinganddrainage 🙄 I guess that makes it safe then? How are you exempt? Because you are self employed? You have a registered business. OSHA has every right to pay you a visit
Perfect job to show the results of your hard work - great job !
Thank you very much T. Have a good evening, Tom
7:40 I most certainly wouldn't want that lawn. It is way too much work for something that most peoples don't use. I would prefer the privacy that was provided by the trees that used to be there. Also, why the heck would they water the lawn so much? The trick to keeping a green lawn is to cut it early in spring, then just leave it alone. It just about stops growing during summer. It will mostly stay green as long as you don't cut it. Grass goes into dormance during dry spells. You should only ever cut it a few days after a rain storm.> 13:25 Given the water problems, it makes sense that the soil would be clay. Water would go through sand easily enough. Clay is basically all we've got where I live. One thing I would have done differently is asked the town to put the catch bassin on the other side of the fence.
Agreed, thank you Jonathan
You guys do awesome work. Do you find the plywood helps?
Thank you Puddlejumper. Yes. In pt1 you can see how saturated and mushy the ground was. There's no way we could run machines back and forth without the plywood. It would have done a lot of damage that we would have to repair. I also especially like the plywood for ease of cleanup. It's very easy to brush or shovel the soil that falls on the boards into the trench. Without the boards the soil gets compacted into the grass and is very difficult to cleanup nicely. It also takes a lot longer to cleanup without the boards. I hope I answered your question, Tom
I would have blocked the colvert until the town corrected the problem.
Unfortunately Mother Nature will always find a way, and directing the water is better than betting against mother nature.
You guys do great work. Your attention to detail is awesome.
