    Religion and faith are kind of separate things. Faith is the belief in God and that your good deeds and hard work will be rewarded. Religion is more of a human form of organization around a common set of beliefs/faith. You can start with faith and then the religion follows. But if the underlying faith disappears then people will abandon the religion because it will be meaningless, pointless, hollow. I think that happened in Europe almost 100 years ago , in the US maybe a bit later. Without faith in a greater cause beyond yourself there really isn't much of a point in having children because they don't serve you, you only serve them

    Government = "someone else should do this". Because you don't need government to do something yourself. You only need government to force other people to do things. So when people say "the government should do this" , they're saying "Other people should be forced to do this".

    The government enacted pension laws that the baby boomers paid into their whole lives. Now that they retired we find out the money has been mishandled or "repurposed" (stolen). Everybody was expecting that they would be able to simply pass the burden on to other people's children. The lesson is that you should not trust or rely on the government for anything.

    "People move cities for careers". Exactly. Industrial and postindustrial capitalism has been a parasite in the body of society, feeding on the vital organs of family and neighborhood and friend groups, consuming them individual by individual and custom by custom. Take daycare. Fifty years ago paying someone to look after your children was abnormal - childminding was something neighbors did for each other, if grandparents or sisters couldn't do it. (The exception was babysitting, a custom that allowed teenage girls to get (more) experience looking after younger children, limited to a few hours in the evening when the kids were mostly asleep anyway. The payments were token. Babysitting also exposed teen girls to the idea of having a family; as Stephen essentially said, "social proof" is important for women.) Every one of the bonds that tied us together, that made us human, has been corroded and dissolved by capitalism and its mindset. Now we are consumption and labor robots and see everyone else that way too. Easily discarded if they are not useful to you. Society is an empty husk, dead but not quite fallen over.

    Meta comment: At the end of this chat, Stephen says he is getting enormous interest from young people. I hope he is right, but it doesn't look like it. I have watched maybe twenty serious videos on fertility collapse (besides many more on the related/overlapping topic of cultural collapse, shout-out to KaiserBauch), interviews with people such as Nicholas Eberstadt, Paul Morland, Darrell Bricker, and more besides. And there are many less-serious videos by channels such as TLDR News and several "life in Korea" channels, and interviews with Peter Zeihan and his ilk. The really noticeable thing to me is how few views these videos are getting, compared to videos of people doing silly things in video games, cats doing silly things, politicians doing silly things, and such. Thousands or tens of thousands, versus tens of millions. The one exception is a video by the Hoover Institution which has 5.3M views. I don't think there is much interest at all.

      I wonder how much of it is algorithm pushing more shallow clickable content over more meaningful videos. It will depend on the platform for sure, but algorithms are scewing our perception for sure. I also believe that even people stuck in the shallow end of the content spectrum do look for more insightful things when their life demands it from them. And if they do come across it, what they see has helped them, the chances are they'll stay around for more.

    In 2013 Karen Swallow Prior wrote in the "Atlantic" magazine about a shift in the role of marriage in the life of young women over the last few decades. During the Baby Boom marriage was a cornerstone on which couples built their lives together, something they did intheir early twenties. Since then marriage has increasingly become a capstone to a life achieved successfully, an instagrammable extravaganza signalling that you have the career and the house and other markers of success. This shift from cornerstone to capstone explains the number of people still single and childless at 30.

    What about the so-called 'maternal instinct'?

    • @WisdomRebellion
      @WisdomRebellion 3 дні тому

      I think on the biology side, the maternal instinct really gets going when women turn 30-ISH - it does vary on each woman. By that point, the fertility is already in decline, so that's part of the problem. There's less expectation from society and family to have children early, and then we have this profoundly anti-natal culture, which is telling women children will ruin their lives. I also had a really interesting conversation with Erica Komisar, and she believes that the fading maternal instinct is due to the way we were raised, broken families, dysfunction relationships with those closest to us can often leave people without a blueprint to follow.

    My neighbor remodeled her house and bought a new washing machine. She put the old one by the street with a "FREE" sign on it. It sat there for many weeks. Then she put a $50 sign on it. After a few days someone stole it. People don't value things that are free. The same goes for kids. If you pay peope all sorts of money to have kids it reinforces the thought that kids are a burden and not otherwise desirable. Besides, I do think it is unfair to the people who do not have kids. Maybe one person likes to have a big car and the other likes to have a big family. Why would the person with the big car have to pay for the other person's big family?

    • @WisdomRebellion
      @WisdomRebellion 6 днів тому

      I think the argument about potentially burdening childless with some of the cost that parents bear has all to do with the fact that one day, those children will be paying for the social security and health care of the childless. That also isn't fair. The system has plenty of unfairness built into it as the same can be said about benefits system - why do we pay in even though most people never use it? On each one of these , you can argue they are unfair, but some of them are necessary for sure to support more vulnerable in the society. It's not a perfect system, but for the most part, it can work if it's not abused.

    OECD countries, who have an average per capita income 4 times the world average but make up only 15% of the world's population, will be able to maintain their population through immigration. The real crisis will come when fertility falls in the poorest countries, and these countries suffer a massive depopulation from the combined effects of emigration and low birth rates. We already see some of the effects of that in parts of the Balkans, such as Bulgaria and Moldova. Also, in the wealthy countries, it's going to be interesting to see what the inter-generational tensions will be when there are far more old people than young people, and when those two groups are of different ethnicities. I already see that in my neighborhood, where most old people are white, and most children are brown.

    @WisdomRebellion Darrell Bricker is largely correct except that his current numbers and future projections are more conservative than what's actually happening. Plus he (like all other demographers) cannot tell you the BILLION dollar question, "WHY". Without knowing "WHY" the population is falling, you can only tell that the population is currently falling; that's what you're seeing all over the world. Beyond that, any projection is just an educated guess.

    Bricker seems to ignore that human behaviour is genetically determined to a large degree and if it comes down to personal preference, there's going to be extremely strong selection for the preference to have children. In the West, that tends to be more conservative types, often religious. It won't take many generations to breed out the tendency to not bother having children.

      Is it possible that due to rising autism rates we will potentially have more people that don’t want children? I greatly suspect a contributor to the rise in autism is Screen Time, particularly for children under age 8 years old. What appears to be a straightforward genetics issue might wind up being impacted by how current technology is interacting with those genetics.

    • @blackcatdungeonmastersfami5311
      @blackcatdungeonmastersfami5311 5 днів тому

      @@derek4412 Yes genetics always interacts with environment, I agree about that. You're probably right about screen time too even if it;'s not the only reason. But still, selection pressures in modern society are different from in our long prehistory. If there is now very strong selection for just wanting children in our modern society, genes for that tendency are going to spread - rapidly. Low birth rates due to culture can't be expected to just endure generation after generation.

      It's an interesting point. Louise Perry talked about the recent shift to more conservative values - as an example, the acceptance of gay marriage seems to be declining now. One of the hypotheses out there is that because people conservative in their orientation are having more children than their liberal and progressive fellows, resulting in more conservative values being propagated into the future. I like that hypothesis. Another potential explanation is the research showing that more chaotic culture, society, and politics eventually turn people to more conservative and traditional values to counter the chaos with order. Both of these make sense to me, but it's probably a highly complex system being affected by many forces.

The new liberal movement is much more chaotic and anarchist like BLM, pride, antifa. The "old right" i.e. Bush era has lost respect and there are also 2 movements, either a libertarian stance, small government lots of freedom including things like gay rights. Then there is also a faction that is getting very angry at the status quo and wants more drastic change. If you want fast change you need more control. It seems certain that it will still be negative, and of significant magnitude at that. The further question is, what will be the second-order derivative? I.e., will the geometric rate of decline of population be finally slowing, or actually still accelerating? Answering these questions goes much to help estimate the level (well below 3 billion) at which the global population will finally cease to fall further - and whenabouts this might happen - 2150? 2200?...

      @lhurst9550 I agree we could adapt back to the more farm orientated living, but my concern in all this is sustaining the infrastructure we've built, which isn't easily resolved with pre-WWII style of living. We have a number of nuclear arms, reactors, and waste, which need constant monitoring and active management. I'm not sure if we can move back to farm communities and still maintain the handle on these very powerful technologies we have developed. The electric grid, hospitals, water treatment plants, etc. all require technology and intensive labour to keep it all ticking - making it all more accessible and improving will require investment, technology, people's movement and progress, which normally isn't achieved when people are more tied up to their land as it was the case with pre-WWII world.

    The more wealth you have, the more things you can do, the greater the opportunity cost of having children. If you have a society that values individualism (which is encouraged by capitalism) naturally people won't prioritise children. People leave it too late and then their chance is gone. One thing to note is that they found that when men came into some money they tend to look to form a family. When women came into money they tended to break up their family.

      Fair comment, I couldn't imagine having a child initially. It's such a big change that even if you consider it, your imagination is still miles off from reality. Once I decided I wanted to start a family and my son was born, I can't imagine how I was ever happy without him.

    It would be interesting to dig into the psychology of the childless or of those who remain single, to see why. I suspect many come from dysfunctional families with at least one abusive parent.

      I've heard that hypothesis from someone with a psychology background, so you're in a very esteemed company thinking that. It's something I also wonder about. Out of the friends of mine who decided not to have kids, the only ones who did certainly came from dysfunctional families. I think this could possibly be affecting women more than men, too.

    Demographic crisis is the result of other issues that world ignored. Poor education, bullying, denying people their truth,. Crime, poor nutrition, greed, corruption, these were the issues which were ignored. Population collapse is just a symptom of worse things to come.

    Nap when they nap is the worst piece of advice especially if you have a short napper. When am I going to eat, shower , clean or take time for myself? I hate that advice cause most times by the times I settled into sleep after eating a meal (30 mins) plus the 15 mins it takes to fall asleep my newborn was awake. It just ended in frustration if anything. So no expectations no frustrations.

    Thank you for continuing to discuss this topic. When every family member is against not putting our 3yr old into nursery, watching interviews like this remind me that I’m doing the right thing. It baffles me why we think it’s better to put our children into settings when they’re young. People look at me like I’m insane when I say, it’s actually better for kids to be with their parents when they’re young. Shouldn’t that be common sense? It was thanks to this doctor that I decided to not return to work and to have my children home until they’re at least 5-6yrs old. My children can’t thank you enough. Thank you.

      The culture seems to go against any common sense we used to or still have. I'm keeping my children close to me and consider delaying starting school for my little boy too and that was thanks to Erica too. It's what I believe is best for my children but also for me - spending time with them has been and continues to be the greatest adventure of my life. Thank you for going against the grain. So many other women would benefit from doing the same.

    The assertion that an entire race is conspiring to oppress and subjugate the victim class is right out of the nazi playbook. The assertion that history is being suppressed is thoroughly debunked by the fact that the history in question is common knowledge, and always has been. "More important, as critical race theorists we adopt a stance that PRESUMES that racism has contributed to ALL contemporary manifestations of group advantage and disadvantage along RACIAL lines, including differences in income, imprisonment,health, housing, education, political representation, and military service. Our history calls for this PRESUMPTION." "Words That Wound: Critical Race Theory, Assaultive Speech, and the First Amendment" by Matsuda, Lawrence III, Delgado, and KIMBERLE' WILLIAMS CRENSHAW Those are their words from their intellectual papers: It is the entire foundation of the premise. CRT promotes the notion that the fact that a group is measurably superior is proof that everybody in that group is guilty; and, that a group being inferior is proof that everybody in that group is a victim. Further: this principle projects through time; asserting that what happened to the long dead projects onto the guilt or victimhood of the living; even if the living never experienced it at all........... CRT uses history and statistics to justify using government force to implement racial discrimination. CRT obviates the need for any thought, word or act of racism as proof of their presumed verdict. All they need is their preferred race measuring less favorably than another. Regardless of the cause: they declare their favored race to be victims of the other. Then they would use real government enforced discrimination in response to their presumed discrimination; altering laws, policies and practices to favor their preferred race. All for the stated purpose of forcibly making the measurements between races identical. The operative question is whether you support using government force to implement racial discrimination. All the rest is academic. My answer is no.

    The Eugenics Movement bears a striking resemblance to Critical Race Theory. An academic movement used to justify using violence against honest, peaceful people. The central theme of the justification being the fact that people measure differently from one another. They both cherry pick statistics that support their preformed conclusions. They both ignore real causes of their measurements in favor of their own sophistry. The more things change; the more they stay the same.

    The wealth of the US is in the hands of the elderly. The argument that the young will shoulder the cost of the care of these folks in the next 10 years is counterintuitive

    • @WisdomRebellion
      @WisdomRebellion 23 дні тому

      It might be counterintuitive, but that's how our societies are structured - there might be other ways of structuring it, but so far, we haven't. As for the wealth being in the hands of the elderly, that's true, but it doesn't mean it's inherently unfair. The older people lived much longer than the young, allowing them time to gather wealth through their work. The compounding effect is real and powerful - it's obvious that overall, the older people will be much more wealthy than someone who's just started working in the last 5-10 years.

    Me personally, I feel like I need children because I feel bad for my parents. They've created a great life for me and my brother and it seems like they're just waiting around for their grandkids. I'm 32 and my father finally asked me why I don't have a partner and I had to tell him that women my age don't want kids. It's really not my fault. A lot of women don't want children. I also know some women who can't have children and that's one thing to keep in mind. There are women who have to live with the guilt of not being fertile and they do take that hard.

    We wonder why ancient civilizations ended and I think it's because of population collapse. Think about this. The living can no longer bury the dead, you'd end up with entire cities and neighborhoods with nothing but deceased bodies. That would be a biohazard and literal nightmare for the living. The living would simply move somewhere else and never come back to the dead civilization. For generations people will just avoid the horrific dead and decaying city that once existed and it never comes back. If it's lucky, artifacts and structures survive long enough for historians to find them thousands of years later.

    If testosterone is the “repair hormone”, doesn’t it stand to reason that if you have really high testosterone after your workouts, that means you are damaging your body in other ways?

    • @WisdomRebellion
      @WisdomRebellion 25 днів тому

      From what I know, men, in general, have quite a low level of testosterone, which shows in the averages used by the medical field. Levels of testosterone reached by cold exposure + exercise can go over the norms, but from observing men who get these, they seem healthier than ever before. It is impossible for me to know whether there might be something going on in the background, which would be damaging, but that's how I understand it.
