How to attract sparrows to your backyard - basic tips
I wouldn't mind them so much if they weren't so darn messy. They're messy with the seed and their droppings are all over our porch and adirondacks. Thanks for the seed suggestion.
I’ve seen a group of house sparrows in the neighborhood which is a good bit worrying since we get a lot of tree swallows and every year. Luckily my neighbor has swapped his seed out for suet and is attracting a ton of chickadees and woodpeckers.
If you live in a rural area and have unlimited feed then maybe sparrows are ok. I love all birds. However sparrows can be a challenge. Their chirping is not soothing. They don't eat the whole seed. They bite and discard the husk . That makes a mess. If you live in a townhouse or apartment and have open balcony the husks will fall to the people below you. Even if balcony is closed the sparrows will bite the seeds sitting at the top of the balcony and still drop the mess downstairs. The can be agressive. I have seen them steal from pigeons mouth a couple of tines in urban parks where people were feeding them.
Great video Carson! 👍
Superb, informative, and splendiferous simultaneously... thank you!
I love listening to the different birds, unfortunately the house sparrow is not one of them.. their chirping is nerve-wracking unlike the melodic soothing uplifting sounds of the others, which goes with their beautiful feathers. I almost only hear the pests and their boring coloring but when I hear the songs of others and get a rare glimpse, it's magical.
He a house finche. I'm a field finche. We ain't the same.
I have a japaneese maple on my patio. A family of Cstbirds ha e moved in. Thanks for the tips.
That is awesome! Glad I could help.
What about bears?
I have never had to deal with bears in my area, but here is a good link with some information I think would help you: billings.wbu.com/kathy's-%20corner-dealing-with-bears-at-your-feeders#:~:text=A%20very%20effective%20method%20for,you%20hang%20feeder%20is%20critical.
Thanks for the great info.
Glad it was helpful!
They are great on the grill
Nice job. Very informative
Nice Video Carson!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for your video, it’s amazing ❤
Thank you for this wonderful information.
Your videos are awesome bro! Thank you
❤❤❤
It's important to note that Carolina Wrens prefer their nests 3-10 feet above the ground. Heights outside of this range can have substantially lower occupation rates.
That video shows bluebirds bathing with a house sparrow!??? 😮 How do u get them to coexist? Also, I'm having a wren problem piercing my bluebirds eggs 😢totally crushed by this..
Plant oak or beach trees for best results.
Just found your videos on bluebirds. Love them❤ what time of year is best to put up bluebird houses? Thanks!
Love your videos-great job!! You’re simply adorable (and so young!) to know all of these details! Keep up the great work and thanks for this info!!
Doves are everywhere you don't have to do anything to attract them. They can be a plague and destroy a lot of farm crops every year. They are a game bird for this very reason. They are hunted to reduce there numbers. In South America they are a plague. People I work with go there every year just to hunt them. I never ate dove but I heard they are good to eat. I have two types of doves that come to my yard ringed neck and morning doves. I don't feed them they eat the food the other birds drop out of the feeders. I also have owls, hawks, and eagles In the area they feed on them. I see feathers in the yard all the time where they grab a dove.
I once saw one on a logging road in the Pennsylvania wilds. Every time I’d jog or walk along the road he would fly in front of me. It was like seeing a beautiful man in public; I never forgot him. ❤
Safflower all day
No Bradford Pears please. Invasive species that crowd out native trees!
Saw my first ever today!
Just now starting to really see the Blue Jays @ our farm in Texas; thanks for the tips so hopefully, I can bring more in. xo
Beautiful!! I played this for me beautiful backyard birdies this evening....and they LOVED every song!!! Thank you! ❤❤❤
Great blue bird video. I have a couple taking up residence right now.
For a kid without real shop tools you did great!!
i saw a mourning dove on my window at 05.12, it got me wondered how many bird i will get when i set up a bird feeder around at my area...
Could you please give me examples of perches that they use?
*Mourning dove (not morning). I actually found your video looking for what type of bird I heard this morning. It sounded almost like the sound of whistling at a pretty woman. Any idea?
Apparently it's male mourning doves who make that sound, doing it to attract a mate, so your simile is pretty close.
I had a bluebird family in my nesting house. It was on a fence post close to my house, facing south. It was very protected. My husband and I were so excited to have baby birds. We could hear them chirping for food. Mommy and daddy were working hard to feed them, I took a picture of mommy and daddy perched on the house That afternoon, I could hear the little babies. Mommy and daddy were busy. I was away all day and when I returned I didn't hear the babies. Fearing they were dead, I opened the nesting box . And there was the problem.... a rat snake was curled up in the best and had eaten the babies. I was so sad. I had protected the nesting box since their birth and in just a couple of hours, a predator held them hostage! I realize what a miracle it is to see a bluebird family together. It won't happen again! We moved the box on a PVC pipe and place a slinky around the pipe to scare any predator away. I hope and pray the bluebirds return and try again.
Thing is this woodpecker doesn't have a speck of red on it's belly - it's got a orange/red head though and they are beautiful birds.
Very lovely..I also have alot of verified spies of unusual birds, just saw an Indigo Bunting.
See these birds all the time as I live in Central Maryland myself. I live in Bowie which is in central Maryland.
Nice and easy build for a bird house thanks!
Hi Carson. In your experience, what seems to be the cardinals’ most favorite seed?
Can't gray squirrels climb up the wood to access the suet? If you use a longer 2x4 and add a baffle below the feeder that should keep the squirrels out.
Can't keep the house wrens from taking over the bluebird houses
Great videos!
Thanks Carson
What’s the bird in the background at the hummingbird bit?
Looooove your videos ♥️♥️♥️
How small are the carolina chickadees? I was in Fort Washington park and saw a tiny bird in the tree. By the time I tried to snap a picture, it flew away. It was smaller and slimmer than a house sparrow.
Thank you for this video I really enjoyed it learned a lot
Thank you for these tips. Pygmy nuthatches are in the yard, and now I know how to help them.
They love the dried meal worms I've been laying out. Now I have babies in my back yard.
