How to attract sparrows to your backyard - basic tips
That's a great plan you came up with! You said the hardware is cut to 18" in height but what is the other dimensional length of the hardware cloth that wraps around the pole to make a cylinder? Thanks!
Hi Carson, you went with the slot design. Can you please share your thoughts on why you chose it instead of the classic hole design?
Thank you for your knowledge.
Thank you so much for this video! It's helped me get really good at identifying my backyard birds.
A mourning dove has made its nest on top of my AC unit sticking out toward my balcony. I want to gently somehow shift them to maybe right next to the AC unit and build some type of landing area where it can be on that instead of the AC. Any recommendations on how to go about doing this? I know if there’s an egg or anything I won’t move it but in the future I’d want to move it off of the AC. Because in the summer I didn’t know it was there and the only way I found out was because I found an egg under the AC. My pool towels were on the bench below and I realized it was an egg and it must’ve rolled off of the top of the AC. I’m guessing the pour dove never realized where the egg went. I wouldn’t want it to lay another egg on top of there and it slip down again. :( Made me sad. So any suggestions on what to do to help this birdie?
Pure peanut peanut butter, with no added oil, sugar or salt.
they aren't primarily ground feeders. they are always on my damn feeder
Can I put out parrot food
I know you can get solutions for that on WoodPrix.
I bought plans from WoodPrix and I made it very fast.
2024 4 bluebirds roosting under eaves of cabin in winter northern Wisconsin sporatic weather warm and arctic clippers. they fly off daily to feed then return, one eve gail winds 45 mph blinding blizzard snow squalls here they come .I placed a platform feeder below with suet crumbles chopped cranberries and mixed bird seed ,I worry they can't find food out there in winter I keep the woodstove burning on subzero nights to give them some warmth
Until the squirrels & crows eat seeds first. Bird feeders almost need to be in the shape of a fortress
As I’m sure I’m not alone, feeding your dog outside brings blue jays as well 😊 I don’t have a dog anymore but I still want blue jays to come visit 😊
After house sparrows killed the bluebird pair nesting in our bird house last summer, we successfully defended a pair of tree swallows from the aggressive house sparrows by adding hanging CDs and reflective lace to the birdhouse
I have a pair of pileated woodpeckers that come to my feeding stations. Twice they were on the same tree eating together. Once the male came while i was filling up the sunflower box it was less than 4' from me.
Carson, is there a specific type of wood to use and or avoid?
Nope... not walking around my yard in early morning looking 30 ft. in the air for round birds.... 🤣
Now we need to find my boy Rigby.
The white throated sparrow is becoming a favorite of mine :D ~𝓣𝓱𝓮 𝓱𝓪𝓻𝓫𝓲𝓷𝓰𝓮𝓻𝓼 𝓸𝓯 𝔀𝓲𝓷𝓽𝓮𝓻 𝓶𝓸𝓷𝓽𝓱𝓼 𝓱𝓪𝓿𝓮 𝓬𝓸𝓶𝓮~
Lucky to have them.
Nah, they are the worst.
What is the baffle made from and how was it fixed?
I wouldn't mind them so much if they weren't so darn messy. They're messy with the seed and their droppings are all over our porch and adirondacks. Thanks for the seed suggestion.
its called wildlife!, Do u expect small birds just about surviving to clean up after?, I accept all creatures, birds ,the lot, Where i am the urban nature corridors have all been built on. Whole of my country has mass build going on. Wild creatures land. Just like Americas First Nation Indians, who home & rightful indigenous lands were stolen. Your birds have had land that theyve lived on , now made into ppl gardens. Cant u see the planet isnt just for us humans, give some small part to wildlife, foxes. i have, its only fair. God help us when even house sparrows are on an endangered list. X
I’ve seen a group of house sparrows in the neighborhood which is a good bit worrying since we get a lot of tree swallows and every year. Luckily my neighbor has swapped his seed out for suet and is attracting a ton of chickadees and woodpeckers.
If you live in a rural area and have unlimited feed then maybe sparrows are ok. I love all birds. However sparrows can be a challenge. Their chirping is not soothing. They don't eat the whole seed. They bite and discard the husk . That makes a mess. If you live in a townhouse or apartment and have open balcony the husks will fall to the people below you. Even if balcony is closed the sparrows will bite the seeds sitting at the top of the balcony and still drop the mess downstairs. The can be agressive. I have seen them steal from pigeons mouth a couple of tines in urban parks where people were feeding them.
Not to mention that house sparrows are an invasive and aggressive bird. In my area, they are a particular threat to native species, like chickadees and bluebirds. They are notoriously known For kicking these species out of their nests, even killing the young of other birds.
Great video Carson! 👍
Superb, informative, and splendiferous simultaneously... thank you!
I love listening to the different birds, unfortunately the house sparrow is not one of them.. their chirping is nerve-wracking unlike the melodic soothing uplifting sounds of the others, which goes with their beautiful feathers. I almost only hear the pests and their boring coloring but when I hear the songs of others and get a rare glimpse, it's magical.
He a house finche. I'm a field finche. We ain't the same.
I have a japaneese maple on my patio. A family of Cstbirds ha e moved in. Thanks for the tips.
That is awesome! Glad I could help.
What about bears?
I have never had to deal with bears in my area, but here is a good link with some information I think would help you: billings.wbu.com/kathy's-%20corner-dealing-with-bears-at-your-feeders#:~:text=A%20very%20effective%20method%20for,you%20hang%20feeder%20is%20critical.
Thanks for the great info.
Glad it was helpful!
They are great on the grill
Nice job. Very informative
Nice Video Carson!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for your video, it’s amazing ❤
Thank you for this wonderful information.
Your videos are awesome bro! Thank you
❤❤❤
It's important to note that Carolina Wrens prefer their nests 3-10 feet above the ground. Heights outside of this range can have substantially lower occupation rates.
That video shows bluebirds bathing with a house sparrow!??? 😮 How do u get them to coexist? Also, I'm having a wren problem piercing my bluebirds eggs 😢totally crushed by this..
Plant oak or beach trees for best results.
Just found your videos on bluebirds. Love them❤ what time of year is best to put up bluebird houses? Thanks!
Love your videos-great job!! You’re simply adorable (and so young!) to know all of these details! Keep up the great work and thanks for this info!!
Doves are everywhere you don't have to do anything to attract them. They can be a plague and destroy a lot of farm crops every year. They are a game bird for this very reason. They are hunted to reduce there numbers. In South America they are a plague. People I work with go there every year just to hunt them. I never ate dove but I heard they are good to eat. I have two types of doves that come to my yard ringed neck and morning doves. I don't feed them they eat the food the other birds drop out of the feeders. I also have owls, hawks, and eagles In the area they feed on them. I see feathers in the yard all the time where they grab a dove.
I once saw one on a logging road in the Pennsylvania wilds. Every time I’d jog or walk along the road he would fly in front of me. It was like seeing a beautiful man in public; I never forgot him. ❤
Safflower all day
No Bradford Pears please. Invasive species that crowd out native trees!
Saw my first ever today!
Just now starting to really see the Blue Jays @ our farm in Texas; thanks for the tips so hopefully, I can bring more in. xo
Beautiful!! I played this for me beautiful backyard birdies this evening....and they LOVED every song!!! Thank you! ❤❤❤
