Hi friends! I’m Kerry Ann: A happily retired, postmenopausal woman in my 50's. During my working years I was a tenured professor, entrepreneur, and CEO. I retired in 2017 and now I’m interested in the psychology of retirement, soul work in the second half of life, midlife transitions, and graceful aging. I created this channel for the conversations I couldn’t find when I needed them:
How do I build a meaningful life in retirement when work has been my primary source of meaning and identity?
What skills do I need in the second half of life that I never even thought of in the first half?
How can I age gracefully in a culture obsessed with anti-aging and reverse-aging?
What happens in the stage of life between mother and crone (there must be one, right?)?
How do I move beyond the surface-level conversations about tips, trips, hacks, and hormones to explore the extraordinary growth possibilities that lie in aging?
Subscribe to join me on the journey.

A Day in the Life of Early Retirement
That adult-child script is something else. I had my short cut mostly during the early days of covid, so I can't compare, but in general people read me as younger than I am and assume I'm out of place or need to be put in place. It's equal parts hilarious (once they learn my age or encounter my authority at work and are taken aback) and frustrating.
I am in the thick of it. I think hot yoga helps with coping with the hot flashes. I have grown to love the feeling of my body in intense heat. I am trying, but not sure I am going to learn to love the acne and the weight gain. I am trying to just accept them as part of the process and not be judgmental or negative. The surprise physical change is the hypersensitive sense of smell that comes at times.
What would you tell _your_ younger self about menopause? What resources currently exist that you wish you had access to (or knew about earlier)? What are your best tips for perimenopausal women?
never had hot flashes or weight gain but I was a little cranky at times
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I feel less alone. I’ve never heard anyone name the spiritual aspect.
Thank you for sharing, Kerry Ann! I'm experiencing hair changes and hot flashes. When I take in less sugar, I am cooler! 😂 I've joined a Rally Coach community through my medical insurance, which has been helpful in eating mindfully and reducing physical perimenopause symptoms. I look forward to leaning into psychological and spiritual possibilities during this transition. ❤
I think it’s good to do the honeymoon phase things to get the out of the way if they aren’t lasting. They become lasting and so that’s really good ie golf. My husband grew up on horseback but was always working on his parents farm. Now at retirement he wants access to a horse as a pet/friend and as a leisure activity. For me (I’ve never ridden a horse and don’t want to) I love making quilts and home Decor items. I need a swimming pool close by and access to a gym for exercise. I prefer a large room with lots of windows for natural light to sew, knit, embroider and be creative. So this can be anywhere. I think us retirees don’t need to find a final place. We can move anywhere (after downsizing) and try anything.
HI KERRY TFS I'v been in my one story home for 22 yrs.a great convenient regular neighborhood and will most likely stay put at 78yrs. of age .
We were fortunate to have bought a holiday home about 15 years before retiring on the coast, that we renovated & extended to suit our permanent needs. 17:44 At the time we needed a “bolt hole” to retreat to regularly from demanding work lives. Loving nature our criteria was the beach or the mountains. The beach won for safety (less fire risk) & still within reach of hills & mountains. Plus proximity to the city (2.5 hrs away) & family. We love the peace & quiet & big skies. One mistake I’ve observed is people choosing a place, expecting to remain central in their children’s lives - we cannot assume this as children & grandchildren’s careers & interests may take them far afield. We need to find & create our own pathways for this stage of life for our sake as well as theirs.
Thanks for this thoughtful and wise response (especially the mistake you've observed).
I'm not at or near retirement, but this has made me consider where I would choose to live if I could move someone totally independent of my job. Every place I've lived, I moved either for school or for a new job. Those places still met a certain type of criteria, but this is a great thought experiment: what would I want from a community if I was able to move anywhere?
I am so grateful for the recommendation of 1440!
thank you Kerry Ann. all of what you're saying feels so applicable in various disasters - i live in asheville and this is what i'd have wanted people to hear and do in the immediate aftermath and beyond ❤🩹

Thanks for this video, I 'retired' (still weird for me to say that) about 3 months ago and I've been searching for the 'language of retirement' and because it's so new to me I am going with this vibe of embracing all the change involved. I can definitely concur with some of your thoughts, I've had some ugly experiences telling people. But I'm learning!

I think if the individual is fortunate enough to have reached the usually life long goal of becoming financially able to retire , IOW answered all the scary questions of running out of money, missed opportunities costs, astronomical healthcare costs, SSI etc etc Good on you btw. Impressive work. I’d encourage them to ask themselves a few questions before pulling the trigger. Are they emotionally equipped to be retired? Some people’s self worth or ability to feel fulfilled is tied up to their profession. Do they have a plan for all that time they used to spend making a livng? That’s a significant amount of time without a built in purpose. For those of us in the US that’s usually 40 hours a week. In OECD countries, the average workweek is closer to 36 hours. In France it’s 35 hours, that’s a lot of unstructured time. Are you ok with a life full of lazy Saturdays? Lastly I’d ask how’s your social life outside of work? Are all of your friends work friends? A lot of people do the majority of their socializing at work. You’ll no longer have that built in socializing. How will you replace it? Are you involved in any communities outside of work that can fill in that gap humans are social creatures. If the individual has the financial puzzle sorted, yes that’s the most difficult, but there are three other aspects that they need to think of emotional, time, & social. There’s so many people that retire and regret it. You don’t want to become depressed or. socially isolated in retirement and not all of us have a built-in partner.
🤎
I’m 42, I have an all salt & pepper bob. I don’t mind it at all. TBF I had gray hair in m6 30’s & never dyed my hair regularly so it’s never been a drastic transition or a became age related fear. That said, I’m premenopausal & the changes in my body is becoming a truly uncomfortable transition.
I came here to check on you! Love your message and so happy you are good.
PS I haven't yet but plan to donate to World Central Kitchen

I am so glad you're okay! I've been watching in disbelief the destruction and unfortunately, there is no rain in the forecast for next week that would tamper the fire and clean the air. I pray every evening for a little bit of rain. My husband and I live in Sacramento and if you know anyone who needs a temporary shelter and are willing to come up here, please get them in touch with me. Also, I have 3 air purifiers that I could probably overnight to you, I assume they are all sold out in your area. Stay safe!🤗
Thank you so much! We were able to procure air purifiers but I am so grateful for you generous offer!

You are so welcome!
thank you Kerry Ann for this final video of the Annual Clarity Retreat! i was wondering about goals since step 1 😬 and not surprisingly, there is a method to your process 😁. i especially appreciate the normalization of how we each have different goal-setting styles, as well as what time frames work best for us. my overarching vision and goals for the year is two entrees with sides, and i'd say i'm starting as a monthly tapas gal 😉. having the more manageable monthly picture as well as my annual view is really supportive for me. speaking of which, now i need to develop the supportive accountability piece! thanks again, Kerry Ann 💗
It's true that curly helps with the transition ❤. I do find myself going for clothing that is salt and pepper in color. Like you, when my hair was dyed, I had warm colors, so I needed to adjust my wardrobe to fit the coloring of my hair, skin, and eyes. I feel sorry for your curl guy; he may be out of a job soon!😂💰
Also, I loved hearing about the collateral wins that can follow deep inner work🎉
So glad to have you going before me into retirement. You're a treaure!
I’m trying to journey thru this stage of going gray,( and the deeper implications) with the same attitude I applied to becoming an empty nester . Just enjoy every stage and see it as the start of something new to experience rather than something ending that was better. I try to just move through the feelings / emotions as they come up and move along with the flow of life as it is. Sue from Australia 😊
I've been hoping you would update about this! Love how your grays are coming in. I am so grateful for what you share here. I am 46 and in perimenopause, and this is rough! Oddly, it reminds me of what puberty was like: lots of change quickly, lots of not knowing, and getting used to a new version of myself. Do you have any books or resources that supported you during this time?
Thank you @MommatTheRiver ! Perimenopause IS rough and I certainly do have some book recommendations! The best thing I read in terms of _WTF is going on with my body?_ was: The Menopause Manifesto by Jen Gunter. My other recommendations are 1) Wise Power by Alexandra Pope and Sjanie Hugo Wurlitzer (they have a whole resource-rich website at www.RedSchool.net including links to their podcast), and 2) Goddesses in Older Women (Archetypes in Women over Fifty) by Jean Shinoda Bolen (not specifically about menopause but was incredibly helpful to me during that time).

Thank you @denisemalone9017 ! I'm so glad this has been useful for you 🙂
More firsts for me on this step. For the first time I had 99% half circles. I only had 1 completely empty circle. My life vision is wordy (LOL) so small concrete goals (some of them were tasks) flowed to me pretty easily as I filled in the circles. AND I remembered what I learned about the data I collected on unmet goals in step 1. That step taught me that my unmet goals were a result of me not having the mental or emotional capacity to manifest anything (2023-24 have been very personally difficult years). My takeaway from that was to NOT get sucked into the "new year, new me" faux energy and to underplan instead. I'm still recovering from all that, so while I'm better, my mental and emotional capacity can't sustain a lot of lifts. So this led me to 2 things: 1) brainstorming felt heavy and exhausting when I thought about it, so I skipped it and 2) I realized that my goal setting style was tapas. Lol... one small plate at a time. I finish it and then I take a minute and decide if I want another small plate. And that small plate has 1-2 bites on it. Lol... so those small concrete goals and tasks are my tapas.
I love this! Thank you for sharing your process and insights! Yours is a particularly rich example of making this process your own!
Way to go! I saw your next video with gray before this one, and I love it! I let mine come on during covid-19 shutdown; it's been a great way to save money. The one piece of advice I've received is to stick with hair products that are white or clear so that your gray hairstyle don't turn brassy. Enjoy the process❤
Thank you @moniquemills3693 !! I love that you saw the gray on me before you saw this video! I LOVE how it's growing in! I've missed my second color appointment now and I'm happy to be saving that $$!!!
@JoyfulAging there's some powerful about caring for our hair. Feels a bit like gardening a plant 🪴 😅
I've done this for several years and for the first time, nearly my whole list was T's. I'm at such a unique crossroads in my life that I realized that all of my limiting beliefs were guilt, fear or worry about THAT. So it was helpful to summarize them in that way, as themes, and then instead of trying to reframe each individual belief, offer myself compassion and assurance that guilt, fear and worry at this particular crossroad is normal. Definitely taking this list of themes to therapy next week.
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you for sharing what this can look like over time and the power of the "T's". It sounds like you struck a vein of gold! I am sending lots of positive energy for this next level of LIBERATING inner-work!
@JoyfulAging Thanksssss! 💯

In 2019, I failed Dry January but my intuition led me to try another method. I was inspired by you, Kerry Ann, to stop drinking back in 2020. I loved (and still do) red wine and would drink a 1-1.5 bottles a week. So, not really problem drinking, compared to some others, but *I* did not feel good about it. My first day alcohol free was September 11, 2020. September worked for me because it was before the holidays and it felt impossible to experience a holiday being alcohol free, so it gave me some time to get used to it before the holidays began. I used the sober app and that helped so much the first 6 months. I liked the idea that I would just try it out and see what happened, and that it didn't need to be forever. Looking back, it was one of the best decisions that I have ever made for my health. For me, it makes the most sense to just decide that I will never drink, so that I don't do any bargaining with myself or make exceptions. Once the habit of drinking to relax or celebrate was broken, its just not something that I think about anymore and its normal for me to not drink. My friends all know it and either provide alcohol free options or I bring my own carbonated sodas to events. It took awhile to get here, but I am really proud of myself for this and will always be grateful to you, Kerry Ann. So, anybody reading this, you can try this out, in January, or any other month; there is a lot of support available, and you can decide what works best for you.
