As you mentioned that it’s following a ditch, it sounds like it’s a deliberately dug overflow system from the old pit. I presume there is some form of slag heap that the water is leaching from, hopefully DEFRA can test the water soon and determine the level of risk from the overflow and also look at remedial action.

Is the water run in to the canal happening continuously year round or is it an old overflow system? What ever the case, water with that level of particulate matter should not be flowing in whether it’s a toxic metal or not, as you mention it can do a lot of harm to the species that live in the canal.

This is a SSSI site designated by Natural England for rare floating water plants , water quality is Awfull Hopefully Environment Agency will take action along with Natural England , Canal an River trust also Local Authority . There are 2 major issues one in video , other possible leachates from an industrial and commercial waste below ground landfill site on other side of the canal . This canal once held the Angling times pike championship pike qualifers in the late 1980s , was crystal clear water an weed was prominent . Due to above polluted water clear water an weed has now gone . Action is needed !!!!!!!!!

This is a SSSI Protected site for rare water plants , hopefully environment agency, together with Canal river trust and Natural England will take action to stop this .
