Bear vs Bear - Does Size ALWAYS Matter?
Переглядів 13 тис.21 день тому
What happens when a huge male Brown Bear (Ursus arctos) invades the turf of a smaller but super-aggressive female bear? Does relative size always dictate the outcome? In fall, coastal Alaskan weather can be fickle. This affects light, shadow and rain conditions - often resulting in dull gray backgrounds and difficult lighting. But this area also can feature gentle, delicate beauty. Coastal Alas...

Wonderful video, love these arctic foxes!
Hi Gladys, it's Shiela. David and I thank you very much. We were so fortunate to film the Blue Morph variety of the arctic foxes in Iceland. These foxes are amazing creatures definitely worthy of our marvel. Thanks for watching our film!
Incredible film! Well Done & Well Deserved! What an amazing animal.
Hello Gigi, it's Shiela. David and I thank you so much for watching our film. I completely agree with you, the arctic fox is an incredible animal. The shoot pretty much had daily full-on snow storms, with whiteout conditions and subzero temperatures. This beautiful little fox took on what the arctic had to offer, and didn't even blink. The filmmakers not so much, LOL. I think it took a few days for us to thaw out. But we had to tell the world her story, and it was all worth it.
Awesome documentary
@@carolcoffey4154 thanks for your kind comment Carol! We appreciate your support!
Great film once again Shiela and Davit! 👏 Some parts seemed very familiar. 😁👍
Ha ha thanks so much Jukka! Apologies, I thought I replied yesterday but I messed it up. Yes it is almost like we were side by side during these moments! Great trip and we enjoyed meeting the Finnish Trio! Happy holidays to you and your family my friend.
Amazing footage and video production. The raw intensity of these encounters captures nature at its finest. I look forward to following more of your incredible wildlife moments! 💖
Hello DayInParadise, it's Shiela. We are so humbled to have the opportunity to watch these amazing creatures do what they just normally do. Sometimes we have to pinch ourselves that we get lucky enough to film them do it. David and I thank you so much for watching our video.
That is some great footage. And what a story.

Wonderful tribute to 399. Great footage and info on her and the cubs.
Thank you Donna! Appreciate your view and your kind comment.
Hey guys, great cinematography and narration of a true icon who will be missed!
Thank you, Doug. You probably don't remember this, but I was too slow with heavier cinema gear that I wasn't familiar using - 3 strikes right there. You grabbed my gear and raced to the snow bank where the family was, just in time for me to film anything. This footage wouldn't exist had you not done that, and I know it. And when I got there, I was still too short for the snow bank LOL. My eternal thanks to you!!
@@glatznatureproductions I dont even remember that! Holy cow! LOL, must be having a senior moment!
@@douggardner1 Nope, you aren't having a senior moment. One of the reasons I remember that particular incident was because I was standing next to Elaine Var...., and asking her..."What is Doug doing, and where the hell is he taking my gear?", LOL.
@@glatznatureproductions That’s too funny
Dave, you guys are amazing - I love your incredible art - and look forward to seeing more!

Yet another great video. You got some super behavioral footage.
@@love4wildlife Hi Henrik, thanks so much for watching our arctic fox video. I love Iceland, but filming at the Hornstranddir nature reserve in early February was brutal. The place was absolutely beautiful, and the arctic foxes will steal your heart, but the arctic winds cutting from the polar North is nasty and just gets nastier. However, all worth it.
Wow. Scenery out of this world. Heading down there in November but your video has me wishing even more I was leaving tomorrow.
Hi Henrik, it’s Shiela. Thanks so much for watching our puma video. You will love Torres del Paine. I was so lucky to have filmed and followed the journey of several puma families In Torres over the years - except the Covid years when we could not return to Chile. I’m so glad you’re headed to Torres in November. You’re hitting the area in the middle of their Spring, mountains are still snow-capped and the sedge grass is still green. It is an absolute pain in the a$# to lug cinema gear to Torres del Paine, but the landscape and wildlife will make it worth your while. Good luck!!!!
@@glatznatureproductions Hi Sheila. Very much appreciate the input. It’ll be my first trip there so I’m very excited for it. The two of you got some amazing footage. Noted re lugging the gear around. I suspect it’ll be similar to my coastal wolf trips. Will now check out your other videos. Subscribed of course.
@@love4wildlife Hi Henrik, we’ve never filmed coastal wolves so when we do, we’ll know to bug you!!!!
@@glatznatureproductions Happy to assist. Tough but rewarding when it pays off.
Since they are apex predators, how many kits make it to adulthood? I would imagine a good percentage. She looks like she has a healthy family.
Hi Donna - thanks for your comment. In Patagonia the Guanaco population has boomed over the past several years. That’s been good for cub survival rates. However, they do face threats. It’s illegal to hunt a Puma in Chile, but we’ve heard that this is very difficult to enforce outside the national parks. If a mother Puma kills livestock, the whole family is at risk of being shot or losing the mother. Also other Pumas are a threat to small cubs. We saw a tiny, dead cub last year. Apparently its mother was feeding on a Guanaco, and the cub got too close when a large male arrived on the kill and dispatched the cub. So heartbreaking to see, but it illustrated the danger. The cubs also have to deal with increased auto traffic down there. The way the cats disperse at 18-24 months old makes it hard to determine survival rates. Females stay closer to mom’s range but can move 50-60 miles to a new territory. Males can disperse over 200 miles from their birthplace. So it seems like they are doing very well and we would expect a survival rate above 50%, but very hard to be sure.
@@glatznatureproductions Thank you for the info and estimate on their survival rate. I now know they are cubs, not kittens too.
Great work as always. The gators are nice, but I really like the Ospreys. :)
As always - THANK YOU Rigdons! Yes the Osprey is such a cool bird. Got some more footage of them this year (sparring with Scissor-Tailed Kites).
There is a lot of beautiful bird life there. The big trees and gators are so prevalent too. Love the little gators. Very well produced video. Much enjoyed.
Thank you Donna! Yes so true - we were blown away by the birds there. This year we got a lot of whistling duck and prothonotary warbler. And the scenery is beautiful. Appreciate your comments Donna.
Wow! Great footage and the usual wonderful voice over from Shiela.
Glad you enjoyed it Jeff! Thank you for your comment. And yes our vocalist was battling a cold but as usual she powered through and sounded great.
Awesome Sheila and David!!
Hi, it's Shiela. I filmed this way back in 2018, when "outsiders" (non-Natives) were allowed to visit Kaktovik. Currently only Natives are allowed in, since the Pandemic of '20. Still my favorite place to film polar bears. We hope you're well!!
@@glatznatureproductions Nice to meet you Sheila, Libby here. I LOVE polar bears, they're on my list. We have a friend in Churchill, Manitoba and that may be my only chance. Kaktovik? Wow. You lucky thing! We can't wait to get back to AK...should have been there yesterday. But we'll be there in 10 days. Be well!
@@MooseManNaturePhotos Hi Libby, so sorry for the delayed response. We're trying to get new windows installed at our house - our contractor is not very cooperative! Bummer about Kaktovik, I liked filming the polar bears there more than Svalbard, it was more intimate. Honestly doubt they'll open that place up to outsiders. However, I'm thrilled you're eventually getting back to AK. It's far but I'm sure it's home away from home. David and I will be there on 9/1. He just got his Part 107, so David is now an FAA certified commercial drone pilot - great, more toys. So we're flying drones on drone-allowed spots in AK. We hope to have our windows before then, LOL. Pretty sure we'll all meet up in AK somewhere. Now that would be a thrill!!
Awesome video guys. Allan and I love this
Thank you, Carol and Allan. These cats are so elusive and rare, that it took 2 trips to Spain to finally get enough footage of them. We struck out in 2023 but somehow got lucky in 2024. Feast or Famine, LOL. David and I hope that you and Allan are doing very well!!!
Your videos just keep getting better and better! Fantastic!
Thank you Fred! We appreciate your kind words. We learn several things every time we do one of these.
Way to go guys, this film is pretty awesome! I am amazed at the fact that you got as much quality shooting time with the lynx, especially as rare as they are! Congrats on a job well done.
Thanks Doug! Yes we were VERY lucky to get so many sightings this year. 4 or 5 separate cats and a few with multiple encounters. Sometimes they appear and disappear literally within seconds. That big male was definitely NOT shy. He spent five minutes hunting down the rabbit, right in front of us. It was a super experience. Especially after our unlucky 2023 experience (only saw one cat from a distance).
Awww..so cute
Thanks, Iris!
Great video.
Hi Donna, it's Shiela. Thanks so much. It averaged 104 degrees in the swamps when we were filming there last August. No humidity, but it sure felt like a furnace. Still 100% worth it. Thanks for watching our video!

Could just imagine the horror to be hunted by one of these behemoths.Theses bears like all bears are beautiful but their size just scares the he.. out of me.
Hi Patrick, it's Shiela. Thanks so much for watching our video. I filmed this back in 2018, when the Indigenous population of Kaktovik still allowed non-natives to film and photograph on their land. I believe the area had been closed to non-natives since the Covid 2020 Pandemic, but I could be wrong. I agree, the polar bear's size gives it a formidable presence. The native guides' utmost priority was safety, so telephoto lenses and staying quite far from the polar bears during the shoot, was the norm. Fillming in Kaktovik meant filming the entire time from a boat - these behemoths are very curious and are strong swimmers. Impressive and intimidating at the same time! Thanks so much for visiting our channel.
Good video. Just subscribed.good luck.
Hi Patrick, it's Shiela. Thanks so much for watching our video, and for subscribing to our channel. The Atchafalaya Basin is one of my favorite filming locations. As you can see from our channel, we are nomadic filmmakers. We travel way the heck too far to film wildlife. But I believe it's important for wildlife (whichever wildlife species we're filming) to have their stories told. Thanks for wishing us luck!!

Hi Ron, it's. Shiela. Thank you so much, you're way sweet. We both love creating wonderful imagery for the wildlife we film - they are so deserving of it - but you're right, how lucky and privileged we are to be able to create the amazing footage and tell the world about the journey, struggles, and ultimate resilience of the wildlife all around us. I've been encouraging David to narrate these docuseries but thus far, have been unsuccessful. Perhaps when we head out to Alaska.....hmmm.. Thank you again.

Thanks so much Gladys, really appreciate it. We’re done filming in the swamps for this year, I always get a little sad every time I leave the Atchafalaya Basin. But that guarantees I routinely return to the swamps. I’m not sure what the next project is for certain but I’m sure we’ll release something in the near future. Yes I know what the next project is….LAUNDRY!!! Thanks so much again for visiting our channel.
Wow what a beautiful location Sheila! I've enjoyed the video very much. we have lots of egrets here in The Netherlands because we have lots of water.
Hi Gladys, it’s Shiela. My apologies for such a delayed response to you. I’m traveling to another filming location, and was in the middle of nowhere when you commented. I think one of our favorite waterfowl to film are egrets - at least I know I just love filming snowy egrets. I’m glad you see them close to you in the Netherlands. Hi kuyaflipgamer500, it's Shiela. Thank you so much for watching our video. The Mama Bears in Lake Clark are definitely tough - they have to be. Hi Christina, it's Shiela. On behalf of David, thank you so much!! A little backstory to this. During our last afternoon in Kviar, we noticed both Melrakki and her mate close by - although the mate was hugging the steep mountainside near their den. As our zodiac finally launched from the beach en route to the awaiting ferry, Melrakki came down from the cliffs and hung out by the rocky shore, as if to bid the humans good bye.
