Flight 28, Sept 1 2024, Falcon 2 195 (view from the LZ), LMFP
I gleefully kicked over the cone in the center of the target--and then tripped on it and nearly face-planted in the slick, wet grass. Smooooooth. :)

First flight of the morning in still air. The night before, another pilot told me I looked down coming off the ramp for launch 27 the night before, so I made sure to focus on a target on the horizon (and took extra care to get the nose pitch correct so I didn't pop up on launch). In the air, it was smooth sailing, so I let the control bar out more and more to see if I could go hands-off, but th...

Another pilot sent me footage of my flight from the ramp, which was a fresh new perspective for me. This was my first attempt trying to turn back into thermals. Could definitely see I was passing through lift around 30 seconds in. Passed through it and hit sink at 34 seconds, and the turn didn't get me back into the thermal. The second thermal was at 1:17. I could feel I was going up, but it lo...

Ist flight after getting my three spot landings and I overshot the target. :) I might have intentionally started this clip a little on the early side to capture the instructor's praise for getting my spot landings in so quickly. :) Solid launch (other than looking down, which a much more seasoned pilot let me know about that evening, so I'll work on phasing out that bad habit.) I'd already pass...

No Flight 25 footage from the day before as I forgot to turn the GoPro on. It'd been about 1.5 months since Flight 24, and despite a good launch, I felt a little awkward once in the air like I needed a few seconds to regain a feel for flying. It came back quickly, and my landing was fine (my second declared spot landing in a row despite there being a six-week period of no flights), but I think ...

Third and last flight of the day. First time flying in cross conditions. I'm writing these comments after having flown off the mountain 24 times; I'm seeing a lot of what I was missing earlier, and my self-criticism might be useful to new or aspiring pilots. This flight was right at the edge of my comfort zone (at the time) and the windiest conditions I'd flown in to date. The air was also star...

Flights 2 and 3 are missing because I bungled working my first GoPro. This was my second flight of the day. I'm uploading this after having had 24 mountain flights, so my comments have more perspective which might be useful to new or aspiring pilots. Winter flight: Thermal underwear. Thermal socks. Thermal undershirt. Jacket underneath a windbreaker. Thermal gloves. Toboggan under the helmet. K...

First flight off the mountain, morning, about 9am, with winds 3-5mph from the NW. I left in a bunch of pre-launch footage so everyone can see how nervous I was. :) Also, I'm reviewing this footage after nearly a year and having been off the mountain 24 times. This might give a little better perspective for new or aspiring pilots, because I am better able to see what I did well and what needed w...

The GoPro decided to break the video into two parts, so this is the flight minus the launch and about 10 seconds of flight. This was the 2nd flight of the day and the air wasn't yet active, so it was a smooth and controlled flight, just like the one before it. I did another spot landing but I'd forgotten to declare this one before the launch! AUGH! If I'd remembered to do so on the this and the...

2nd flight of the day. Getting more comfortable with stronger (4-6mph) winds on the ramp. I included the hang check in this video: chin (is your helmet on and secured?), chest (have about two fists of distance between your chest and the control bar while hanging freely), cheeks (are both legs through the belts in your harness and properly tightened), and carabiner (clipped in front to back thro...

3rd flight of the day, and this time I remembered to declare this would be a spot landing attempt. (And I got it! 1 down, 2 to go, and 4 more attempts!) The thermals were starting to fire up with the sun coming out, so the air was getting choppier. Prior to launch, we had a sprinkle of rain. We waited for it to pass and the instructor told us to wipe down the leading edge of our gliders to remo...

1st flight of the morning, but the winds were a little strong (for new pilots) and slightly cross. Probably needed to go a little faster off the ramp as it was a shorter takeoff. (It'll get even shorter for future flights when the winds are stronger coming directly in.) Once airborne, it was smooth sailing. Nice, controlled box pattern. I got wobbly when transitioning my hands off the control b...

Thermals were getting really active as midday approached, so there was some increasingly choppy air, especially over the field. When I rolled out onto final approach, I suspected I was probably too low to make it to the spot landing target and was correct. I tried to stay in ground effect too long to get closer to the target, and when I flared, the wing just dropped. This is the first time I ro...

Much less cross-controlling happening, and the glider felt more responsive. Wing control got sloppy as I transitioned my hands on landing (that made me a little right of center on the target). Still managed to pull off a spot landing, although my flare wasn't very good and I had to run it out.

Second flight of the day and second time in a pod harness. Waaaaay better than my previous flight. Still cross-controlling on occasions, but it's not as bad here. This time I transitioned to the downtubes with ample time. Nailed that spot landing, but I could have flared harder to have made it even better. When I got over the landing zone, I noticed there was a shadow of another hang glider nea...

    did you land tail wind? its the first video of this place on someone landing that direction

    • @mikebodary9758
      @mikebodary9758 Місяць тому

      It blows in different directions, and you need to check the windsock and ribbons on the field when you're entering the LZ. If you look at the 3:11 mark, you can see the windsock blowing to the south, so that wasn't landing in a tailwind even though it was from an unusual direction.

    excellent job! I wouldn't worry about calling spots until at least 50+ flights, you still got a ways to go to hit that 90 :P. What I would focus on now is good launches in progressively stronger conditions, and start messing around in the air like start playing with your speed, getting close to stall without actually stalling, going faster and making slight turns to make sure you don't induce PIO (if you do, just back off the speed and let it stabilize itself), practice those coordinated turns in varying turn angles, and get comfortable with more and more turbulence in the air. That's going to help you build tolerance as you either ridge soar or thermal. You're already doing great to come in with speed on final, you'll need to do that as well when you fly tougher conditions so you don't get pushed around when landing. Oh and you seem to already do a great job coming out of the harness already, but if you're still wigged out by it, just get in and out of your harness a bunch while in the air. On lifty days, hell, do diff direction 360s when you are over the field (do it to the left/right of center so you're not doing unpredictable things when other students are just doing boxes) then get into the pattern. Start experimenting, this is when the fun starts!

    • @mikebodary9758
      @mikebodary9758 Місяць тому

      A few days prior to heading to LMFP, I threw a rope over a sturdy tree branch and hung the harness from it so I could experiment with getting in and out of it. I wasn't wigged out by pulling my legs out for landing; it actually felt pretty natural. (Getting the legs in on the first try is a bit harder, but I'm really impressed by the design, ergonomics, and usability of pod harnesses.) Launching, flying, and landing in stronger conditions is on the to-do list when I can get back in--sadly--about a month from now. I'm hoping for some lifty conditions and got permission to do a few turns if I pass through a thermal that seems promising. Sadly, by Flight 24 (my last one so far), there were none. Thanks for your suggestions/recommendations! I appreciate the advice, and if you see something I'm doing that's not-so-good (I try to be critical of my flight in my description, but there are things I know I don't know), please let me know!
