Love the episode!
Hmmmm...or is it that sometimes when we choose to avoid the child is thrown off that we are not reacting as we used to and it may take them a while to respond well to ur changing our steps in the dance (false sense of safety with habitual patterns even if they are unhealthy) before they can choose to respond by changing theirs? something to observe and ponder for sure.
This is so full of practical help- thank you! I admit this can be a real challenge to live out when I am focusing hard to commit to calm first and then come across as if I do not care to my upset teen. This can cause my teen to flare up as my energy and attention is not matching their sense of panic and frustration. Their behaviour can get explosive at this point and then it can be a real challenge to hold to calm and not feel indignant at being treated so badly. It generally cycles downward at this point as I am no longer in a place of curiosity and actually feel like leaving them to their mess alone reinforcing the teen's belief that no one cares and it is everyone elses fault. Ugh!.....your work is so important...thank you!
Thanks for having me on the show!
Your guess said something that I have always believed. The ADHD brains will always be an ADHD brains. Thank you.
You guys are great it’s good to get men involved Kim
I am in shock this doesn’t have more likes!!! I am definitely gonna start sharing!! Love you both!! Amazing people!! 💜💜
Absolutely spot on Jessica ❤
Mr Taylor Klaus have ever live in a house for one or two days in a row with one or two or even 3 ADHD people without pre-scheduled activities? I am really sorry, but it seems you do not have a clear idea of the chaos.
Thank you!
Thanks for having me on the show!
You all are awesome! I know it's been 2 years since you posted this, but thank you for this podcast.
What a wonderful interview, thank you, ladies! I’m one of those “high performers “ I had no idea I had ADHD until my daughter got diagnosed. I thought there’s no way I have ADHD because of my laser focus ability and achieving goals was my super power. ADHD explains my burnout, zero attention to people, family & the world when I focused on something, impulses, desperation for novelty ( I got depressed when there’s no novelty) , anxiety, emotion, craving for growth, crazing for constant stimulation, addictive personality, etc
I have ADD and I had to work harder in school than someone without it. Elementary school was the toughest. By middle school and high school, it was more the structure of it. Having six classes to take care of at once was overwhelming for my brain. I did summer school once though and only had two classes to worry about. With that I passed with an A and a B.
I was very happy to watch this….then I see she/her what can be more destructive then to confuse young minds about gender. Turned off and I’ll look somewhere else. There’s 2 genders and that’s it….this is the problem with teachers.
At my first rebound. Man, it sucks. I'm 37 yo, though. 😂 I was diagnosed not so long ago and we're still adjusting my medication. Will talk to my psychiatrist about it. Still helps just listening to you talking about it. Thanks.
1:15 great way to start out this interview. “Well enough?” Please don’t do that. If nothing else, request that they introduce themselves or, better yet, confirm the pronunciations of their names before beginning. This just furthers the image of white people in the West as being disrespectful of other cultures. It’s not good.
I have taken Sanity School especially for my youngest kids, but am now realizing how I need to figure this out for myself and some of my adult kids....yup...I high achieved in being a parent!
Elaine, are there any side effects to the medication you take? I have resisted the idea of needing meds for years as I do not have an official diagnosis and I felt that the goal ought to be to cover all the basis: sleep well, drink water, exercise, rest, pray, strengthen relationships and routines..THEN if I still need help,,, THEN I can consider meds. What is the name of the med that you are on. Can so relate to trying to get everything right at work so that I can enjoy life after that..exhausting!
Just really learning about adhd. I think fall within this spectrum.
We do online school which is best for my son. He needed something different, he is a smart kid, (I actually believe all ADD/ADHD kids are smart.) At the end of the school, I asked for an IEP for my son. The Asst. Principal said my son was doing so well and didn't understand why. She didn't see what was happening. My son had to stand for part of his recess for his Kindergarten and 1st-grade years because he couldn't sit still. In our first year of online school, (my son was 8,) the teacher sent me a video with ideas for helping wiggly kids. I got my son a ball chair to sit on and he used it to sit on for two years. It really helped. Fast forward, he doesn't sit on the ball chair, or the frame, (he would zoom around on it.) We are haven't trouble getting school started. I have been tickling him, and getting mad when we just can't get started. I think now I will do more with him. I knitted him a blanket and it is heavy, (he liked the yarn so instead of saying no, I bought more and made him a blanket. Thank you.

New Therapist in the house. This is awesome. Wished I had this info when I was raising my grandson.
What I"m taking away is to keep trying, rinsing & repeating! So grateful to have all of your support on this journey!
So glad to be in your group, Ellen! Thanks for sharing your story! I feel like I'm just behind you in our journey, so you're inspiring me to keep doing the work! Love that Elaine and Diane have created this for all of us who have been struggling!
As a former student of Ms.Foster I am immensely thankful for her talking to me as a real person and assisting with everything she did. Keeping up with her students and just fully making sure they are doing the best they can. Everyone needs a teacher like her in their corner

Soo good. Thanks for having Russell on as a guest. He's one of my heroes.
Dr Russell Ramsay's books has been a huge help to me understanding CBT for ADHD. Many psychologist in my country are not that experienced.
Very good doctor!
My 16-year-old is adamant he shouldn't need help for anything and that getting accommodations for his ADHD and autism is somehow a cheat code. Feels like there's no winning with that kid sometimes. What I find more difficult, though, is how to offer/provide less help so they take over the task themselves. It's the all-or-nothing thing, probably, and it translates really quickly to learned helplessness and our 12-year-old is especially guilty with this. Sadly, it's become "you need to do all this by yourself" because if we do anything to assist, somehow that becomes we're expected to do everything. Finding that middle is difficult.
You mention some other podcasts helping with executive function. Any you would recommend?
seth perler is really good with executive function stuff
Thanks guys ❤
Always so nice to hear professionals who not only get it, but can articulate it so clearly. I'm glad I stumbled onto this. I like the idea of teaching the kids to be self-scientists. Great interview!
This is beautiful!!! Grow your page easily = *Promo sm*!!
Crazy insightful…
How do I seek help if I don't even know what's wrong with me or why I feel the way I do, I just constantly feel terrible like I can't stop beating myself up and doing the same things everyday, I have 0 drive to do anything after coming home from job corps (almost died of a tooth infection that they wouldn't sign transportation forms and I lived 6 hours away and only was given 60 dollars every 2 weeks so I had to wait until I had 300 dollars to have my mom come get me. Who would I even call?
Dr. Hallowell does not mention that the lack of perseverance in people with ADHD means that we start things and rarely follow through or complete them. We are only the idea innovators, not necessarily the producers. To say otherwise, mischaracterizes the disorder. The strength-based model is flawed as it assumes that you know or can access gifts that are not related to ADHD. ADHD is not a gift in itself for most people and in most situations. In terms of comorbidities, what about the LDs that can delay or impede educational success, anxiety, depression, etc. Addiction is just one negative comorbidity. Some of us have dysthymia and always have. To say it is not true depression is to deemphasize the harm that the depression causes. What about the combination of ADHD and ASD? He always goes for the low-hanging fruit to push his blessing mantra. We need more Barkley and less Hallowell. The god language was unprofessional and ridiculous.
Do not listen to one single word this guy says.
Bonojurnice to meet you, wow. cool !ImpactParents!:)
Very insightful.
