Morrowind's Caius Cosades - Addict or Genius? | Character Deep Dive

Skyrim might have its civil war, but Morrowind has its fair share of ongoing debates as well! Today, I'm doing a deep dive into Caius' supposed Moon Sugar and Skooma addiction, pulling together all the evidence I can find for either argument - Where he lives, what his fellow Blades have to say about him, what the members of the Thieves Guild know, everything.

Morrowind's SLOW Travel is What Makes it Great

    They need to get rid of the enemy leveling system, theres no better feeling than starting out a game and having to avoid going to an area due to enemies that will let you know you’re new, and don’t have the gear and skills to survive there. And if you can pull it off get in there and get some good loot. There’s a reason that one frost troll on the monk path is a more memorable enemy than Alduin the main antagonist of the plot. That thing wasn’t a leveled fight, I had to use every scroll, summon spell and fireball I had to get him out because I was level 5 and he didn’t give a f*ck.

    Skyrim stretched the "PC is special" trope past it's breaking point for me. I can get that a random Khajiit from down south is a Dragonborn. Stupid, lore-wise, but fine. What's always been hard for me to stomach is that that Khajiit is ALSO the chosen of the God of Theives, God of Murder, etc. You are so special to Skyrim that most of the pantheon has chosen you as their champion which MAKES NO SENSE IF YOU'RE NOT A NATIVE TO SKYRIM.

    My best Skyrim start was a runaway from Riften who was captured attempting to return to Skyrim to find her parents. When she escaped from Helgen, she immediately headed for Riften, never visiting Riverwood, and never collecting the Dragonstone.

    I enjoyed your video. I find that the more I play Skyrim, the more it feels like the world is passive, full of content ready for me to consume, rather than a world that reacts to my choices. In fact, it feels like very few choices are even meaningful. It would be great if NPCs had a relationship meter like in Sims, where your favourite blacksmith would be happy to see you or the merchant you sell to but never buy anything from makes a sarcastic remark like "You know I sell things too, right?".

      @Takarias I mean, Skyrim Special Edition came with the creation club which is directly supported types of mods that even console players can use. Don't remember when, but I do recall Todd Howard 'face of the studio' saying something along the lines of my original comment.

      @@Takarias Because the community ASK FOR THAT ABILITY! Were you around for it's heyday when it didn't have mod support and the community begged for it? Don't sound like it chief.. I said that mods are cool. I am not advocating for them to not exist. They are, however, also not what was printed on the disc. If everyone uses mods (and console players 'begged' for them) because the base game is widely considered bad, isn't that a problem? Why shouldn't we critique the base game in the hopes the next game is better and doesn't need to be immediately fixed by the community? I originally played on 360, which has never had mod support. I'm not sure how that fit into your argument.

    While this USED to be true, mods have come a LONG way since the game first came out. Currently there are alternate start mods that allow you to not be the dragon born, to roleplay your way however you want. Want to be a trader, got it. Want to be a priest, got it, want to be a survivalist living off the land with tough conditions to survive, got it. There's plenty of options now. Thanks to wonderful modders and tons of options. You can even choose where to begin the game, in the wilderness, in a inn, in whichever place you want or at random. You can start on Markarth, on Riften, Rorikstead, wherever you please (within the mod's options) Skyrim has become a blank slate that can be made into basically anything. Want to jump real high? Magical Jumping got you. Use polearms, there's a mod for that. Fist only? why not! Viable magic? you got it. Skyrim got so many options its more fun.

Thus currently we have the USLEEP and other mods to patch out MANY of their bugs that they did not patch out themselves.

    It's been mentioned before but skyrim unbound is a must for me now. I usually set my beginning in one of the port cities like Dawnstar or Solitude, a fresh off the boat immigrant trying to find a new life in a new land. It allows me to craft my character and roleplay. It also allows me to forgo the Dragonborn path entirely so my character can go their own way. Way more fun for me.

    I feel you on the urgency of the main quest. Really the only place I can find to jump off the main quest if I don't want it to be my character's focus is Bleak Falls Barrow. If I never go there, then Farengar has given me a research quest that I can say I'll "get around to eventually" and there are no dragons popping up or any indication that the attack at Helgen was anything more than a fluke. After Bleak Falls Barrow, yeah, the world's ending, why aren't you doing something about that?! Or you can just install an alternate start mod I guess, but I I think your point is that you shouldn't have to mod a game to make the RP flow.

    My biggest problem with Skyrim's intro is Ulfric being there. Ulfric is never shown to be one who would even consider surrender. Even if a whole legion ambushed Ulfric and his 8 Stormcloak grunts, Ulfric would choose Sovngarde over execution and dishonor from surrender. You walk into his home after walking through his army, and he fights to the death. He gets ambushed and just surrenders. It does not gel with what we know of him. Especially since he could likely have made it out of that ambush. Ulfric nearly single-handedly took Markarth back from the Forsworn. He shouted the city gates down. Even surrounded, he could open a path for him and his men to get away from that ambush. When Alduin comes down and he gets free, rather than taking his men and leaving, he just stands in a tower. The Helgen section is a straight character assassination of Ulfric.

      A good leader knows when they are beat and when to avoid a massacre of their own men. Hate him as much as you want, but he's a good leader for his men he is willing to fall with them instead of use them for cover. Even when you take Whiterun for him, or after every hold you overtake he leaves their leaders alive, he only kills whoever he needs to in order to claim victory and nobody else thus he cares about preventing needless loss of life. Maybe in single combat ulfric would have fought to the death or like you said when he's backed up into his own keep but with others that could potentially suffer needlessly he would surrender. I honestly think he could have thought he could get captured and survive and just didnt anticipate being gagged and not able to shout.

      I do think that after the thalmor forged the dossier on him and prevented him from being able to return to the empire after being captured, he also could have thought that with being captured there could be some chance to plead his case to the empire or they would give him some sort of grace because of his truly great service as a soldier and a tongue fighting for them.

    For your Khajiit character, I can think of a few explanations for why your character got captured solo. For a more heroic path, maybe you noticed the ambush ahead of time and rushed forward to spring it, so your charge wouldn't be caught. For a more villainous path, maybe your group was attacked by bandits and you slunk away. For a more neutral path, maybe you just got momentarily distracted at the wrong place at the wrong time, and your group left you behind. You didn't get to explain anything because an imperial mace soon met the back of your head, instant KO

    I'm about to embark on my first playthrough of Skyrim, ever in the not too distant future. This isn't my first TES title; I played the hell out of Morrowind and its expansions back when they were new but dropped the series (and Bethesda entirely) after a long and painful slog through Fallout 3 and its nightmarish technical problems. Most people played those games on the Xbox 360 and were blissfully ignorant of the game engine's deranged coding. Playing those games on PC meant playing Russian Roulette with your system profile, as even very small things that didn't effect any other game on the market could cause Gamebryo to blow its head off in confusion and crash. I don't mean the usual CPU/GPU/RAM and their drivers, but stuff like what sound-card/chip, the presence/absence of network card or modem, and even the version of Java/Flash you had installed because the default U.I. lazily relied on a very specific version of those program suites to function, and having one that was too new would risk a fatal error every time you opened the menu. (something that fans patched after a couple of years of misery and troubleshooting into those games' releases; Bethesda didn't bother fixing any of that until they had Special/GOTY Editions out, and even then they didn't fix every major issue) TL;DR: I stopped playing Bethesda games because I had no interest in buying yet another game console, and their PC technical support was wildly inconsistent; borderline psychotic. (the meme about fans making Bethesda games great is no joke; they rely on fans for so much that their plan to taxing mods with royalties would have outright killed their business had they went through with it.) That, and the games after Morrowind were...just not that good to engage with outside of the combat, which itself was only passable, and not great. The roleplay became dumber and dumber, scenarios and character became increasingly shallow, and the writing for the main story of Fallout 3 in particular was one of the most insultingly stupid goddamned things I've seen in any form of media. ("You must kill yourself to turn on this water purifier or you're literally Satan! Now go watch one of two lazy endings despite Todd Howard promising hundreds!")

    It doesn't copaired to most RPGs TT and video game and defnatly when copired to the new Elder scholl games... Like in skryrim all your canon back story is you get caught crossing the skyrim and cyrdail border... That is litterly it... Compiared to morrowind and oblivain where you are a prisoner of the empire the good guys of the setting and become a member of the blades pretty much the empoires version of the secret service... which in Pblivain no matter what you do you are ingame called the Hero which if you are very much evil minally refenced and only in an oh well ,inda of way... So in both morrowwind and so much worse in oblivain you are the good guy no matter what you do... In skyrim unlike nearly all RPGs... It'ws truly open how you role play your character as you canon back story is non exsistent as they could haven easly had you play you getting caught... Which unlike is insanely rare in RPGs and not only that the game does not force you play in any one way or do things in one moral light... Like you are the dragon born purely because the dragon god blessed you with it hoping you will return Audwin back to him for time out and a stern talking to about how he needs to end the world not rule it. Which you never need to do you can just in the vannialla game see Audwin and spend all you time with the game not even being the dragon born and treating it as a sandbox game like Minecraft. And even when you really begine the story by killing your first dragon you still don't need to finish it as they is no countdown to game over like fallout 1 or Lendgend of Zelda majora's mask... So again you can do all the things end your time with the game never saving the world... And if you do unlike morrowind and oblivain you can betry the blades have dragon friends which may make you evil to alot of people in elder schools... and finish the game by killing auldwin being the most evil person you can... Something that the vast majority of RPG don't let you do... Including the ones where you are forced to be grey,nurtaal,cilvian and evil.

But my first instinct upon seeing the guy was “ah yes pretending to be crazy is the best way to do suspicious things that makes sense”

    I do actually kind of like the early depiction you get from the imperials. it drives you to assume that the Stormcloaks are the more sympathetic side, making you had to Windhelm to join them which leads to you experiencing the nords blatant racism the moment you step into the city. Almost right after you can have an encounter telling you how discriminatory Ulfic acts. The first person who acts kind towards you in Windhelm will tell you about it! So you get pushed to the Stormcloaks because of how the imperials initially treat you only to realize that they a bunch of hateful nationalists. And if you gather enough lore you can even find out that, ironically, the nords are not even natives to Skyrim and that they created the Falmer by forcing Skyrim's natives below the surface.

    You know the worst thing about the civil war premise? You can't tell that there is a war going on most of the time. You don't see battlefields, you don't see destroyed areas, you don't even get to see any skirmishes between Stormcloaks and Legionnaires. The only time you even hear/see the war is from NPCs, and the civil war questline itself. And even during the questline, battles only happen when you make them happen. The latter leading into a whole other issue I have with Skyrim and Bethesda games in general. And let's not even mention how short and underwhelming the civil war questline is; you could easily complete it in less than 30 minutes or 2 in-game days.

      The worst thing is that they said they cut half the civil war content because they were rushing to release when they did, but then never reintroduced any of that content in the 50,000 re-releases and remasters they did.

      The funny thing is, you see the civil war mainly from the secondary effects of it. That of increased bandits.

    I hate how inconsequential everything in Skyrim is. Catch early stages of Vampirism, and now you have a 72 hour timer? It’s fine, you’re never more than 4-5 minutes from a shrine that will cure you for free. Kill an NPC and are caught by the guards? You’ll be charged a pitiful 1k septim fine. You can walk into any dungeon and find 1k septims just lying around.

    i love your deduction on who might be caius' dealer :'D my personal hot take: if caius is addicted to anything (and i'm certainly not saying he couldn't be!), it's probably stimulants. something to help him get through the 24/7 alertness and constant pretending, gruelling work hours, keeping the entire island of vvardenfell in check... i feel it's unlikely for it to be a hallucinogen like skooma. that's just too risky for someone in his position. basically if he's a high functioning addict i think like he's more the "snort some hackle-lo extract to pull your 11th consecutive allnighter" type rather than the "take a fat skooma rip to straight up ascend into aetherius" type

    I just want to call out whatever bs has been fed through the grapevine about SkyUI and it's impact on kbm players. SkyUI is compact and boring, removing flavor from a perfectly functional interface.

    • @Takarias
      @Takarias 2 дні тому

      I originally played Skyrim on 360 and found the UI clunky there as well. The original UI is, frankly, abysmal with both input methods.Even Oblivion's - as clunky as it is - is better. Yes, Skyrim's menus are 'functional,' but barely, and lack basic functionality and UX features. When asked what mods he like, Todd Howard immediately mentioned SkyUI. They know it's bad, they're just uninterested in making it better, as evidenced by Starfield's menus being little more than a reskin of Skyrim's.

    • @groggygreen
      @groggygreen 2 дні тому

      @Takarias I disagree. Skyrim's UI is fine and Oblivion's is just as boring as SkyUI. I'm not trying to sort through an Excel document when I want to look at my inventory. Even if Skyrim's UI was as clunky as you claim, I would still prefer it over the endless lines of text in SkyUI

    • @groggygreen
      @groggygreen 2 дні тому

      @Takarias because it's boring and unengaging, the opposite of what video games are meant to be. If the UI isn't captivating then the game suffers for it. There's a reason games used to have fun UI and menus and it's the same reason people are starting to be more vocal about oversimplified menus in recent games. If people are spending a decent chunk of time in the menu then it needs to look nice and usually has themes associated with the game.

    • @Takarias
      @Takarias 2 дні тому

      But SkyUI literally has more theming? The vanilla menus are actually just columns of text with huge swaths of empty space and very limited information being presented, while SkyUI has graphical elements to denote item types and categories while wasting less space and being more usable with a mouse. I hear the controller experience for SkyUI has some shortcomings, though I cannot speak from experience on that.

    It's like Todd wants both interpretations of the RPG all at once and it just doesn't work well. If you want the interpretation that you are playing a single role, with an omnipath story, like the Witcher, great! If you want the classic DnD interpretation where how the story paths and plays out is based largely on the role the player CHOOSES, great! But you really can't have both without sacrificing most of what makes either interpretation actually good.

    I like the roleplay aspect but if the game just softlocks after 4 hours of gameplay because xyz decision made earlier with no other alternatives paths or way outs thats just poor design. I get it if the game is to punish me for doing something wrong. But if i can redeem myself i will. Learn from my mistakes if you will.

    The thing i hate about bethesda games is not it is holding my hand and showing everything. In fact, RPG games -especially bethesda's- needs that feature because my common sense may not be added into the game. What i hate about are lack of options and unreactive world. I always give this example: (SPOILER) after doing season unending, making the two political factions sign a truce till alduin is defeated, if you try to join them they do not acknowledge who you are. Galmar still sends you to kill that ice wraith to "prove you are capable". Brother, you begged me to favor the truce in your favor a while back, just so i can kill the literal tyrant dragon who eats the souls of the dead. How come you not acknowledge this? The other thing i have a problem about, which is lack of options, can be explained further. Most quests tend to have one ending, no matter the player actions. The Paarthurnax quest is famous for this, since there is no way to finish that quest but killing Paarthurnax. However, other quests tend to have the same issue (and i heard if you do that Paarthurnax quest early in game, you can finish it without killing him). Another example is the quests involving whiterun. When starting the game, if you ignore the main questline and for example join the stormcloaks, balgruff will simply refuse to be sieged by stormcloaks because apperantly bethesda did not want us to do the main questline with a stormcloak jarl. I have no option to play the quests in which order i want, how i want, and with which impacts i done to the world.

    My biggest problem with Skyrim is the civil war in general. Because unless you play a Nord both sides are terrible to you. The imperials are jerks who want you dead for the crime of being near a border despite the fact you're not on their list... And the stormcloaks will take one look at you and say "you're not a Nord. We're trying to throw your people out of Skyrim." It's especially rough playing a dark elf (which is my favorite since my first game was also Morrowind) and you walk into the city to join up... And find that everyone specifically hates the Dunmer.
