Santa Cruz Water Lily (Victoria Cruziana) Blooming
Huntington Botanical Gardens acquired Santa Cruz waterlily (Victoria cruziana) seeds from Ganna Walska Lotusland earlier this year. Exceptional germination resulted in an abundance of seedlings, 2 of which the Arboretum was able to acquire. The plants were planted in 5-gallon pots and installed in the Aquatic Gardens on July 26. The first flower opened on August 29. Look for more flowers and larger leaves coming.

    I love that you mentioned the water needs of a tree in discussing the ground cover. I have a stunning Birch in area code 93446 and would love a ground cover that does not attract bees as clover does. The water needs have to be the same. Thank you for any suggestion. Best wishes

      Native Juncus species (rushes), native Sedges. If you don’t mind going non-native, dwarf Cyperus. These will withstand the copious amounts of water that your birches demand.

    I wish people would stop cutting these down. There are hardly any around and whenever you find one sooner or later it gets cut down. People should be ashamed of themselves. Yes it makes cones and the foliage is sharp but they are a very special tree in my opinion.

    Do any of these die off and need to be replanted seasonally ? Does it grow well with a lawn of thyme ? Is a lawn of thyme possible in California ?

    • @laarboretum
      @laarboretum Рік тому

      Hi! Frank says, "No, these are all perennials and do not need to be replanted if cared for properly. The groundcover woolythyme is partially deciduous in the winter. You can grow it, but unlike on the east coast or in the Midwest, its ugly winter visage will not be conveniently covered by snow."

      Hi! Our Botanical Information Consultant says there are two things that may help: 1. Bury a weed block vinyl sheet vertically (they are used for bamboo mostly) along the border of where you want the plants. 2. Plant a small to medium sized grassy lilaceous plant with shallow roots in between the poppies. The lilaceous plants will suck nutrition from the plant to keep it less robust AND you may see an increase in flowering period because the cooling effect of the lilaceous plants will prolong the bloom period. Lilaceous plants include: Mondo grass, Lily turf (Liriope), and Society garlic. Feel free to reach out to Frank McDonough directly at Frank.McDonough@arboretum.org. Hope this helped!
