Therefore, we tailor our approach to meet you where you are in your miniature painting journey. Whether you’re picking up a brush for the first time or you’re looking to refine your advanced techniques, GitGud is your community.

Thanks for the nice words of comment. Congratulations to everyone.
oooh i didnt know you did a thing!! I'll be sure to send somethign next time!
Once more, thank you so much for doing these challenges, it's a lovely thing for everyone involved and watching! I'll happily participate whenever I can <3 Now excuse me gotta put "Making PhoenixMiniatureArt go *hm, huh, hummm*" on my CV.
I have to comment fhaf what you guys are doing here is great and unique. Your taking high level pieces and actually analyzing from both an artistic and technical point of view. No other podcast does this (even COP) and you two do it so well. This is exactly the kind of content that's missing in the space right now so I hope you lean into it more.
Thank you! We really appreciate you taking the time to write this and comments like this really mean the world to us!
Glad to hear it and also trying to br constructive and sharing because I think it could really help. Honestly, this type of content is more engaging and valuable than the topics like dad life or community-building or other general stuff (fine in small doses yes). The way you both dive into painting techniques and creativity is where you truly shine, have expertise and I think if you focused more on that, it would not only make your content more interesting (at leaat to me) but also attract a bigger audience. Just some honest thoughts- take it or leave it
Absolutely Brilliant!
Thank you! Hope you find it useful!
rewatching this video like 3rd time for some colors, and still tabbing to my discord 😂
Rule One: Always be Buying Paint!
IONIC smart colors on my radar atm. I hope we will see 2nd part of this pod with other colors. Like Vince V did not a while ago
@@ЗлаЗПраков absolutely, we've already switched them up since this recording. We did a year end video on Patreon where we took a quick re-examine!
How does someone enter the competitions? Is it on Patreon?
It is indeed! We run it in the discord which is linked via Patreon
@GitGudPainting Thank you! Will check it out then!
24:30 Bruce hasn't realised yet, he's also from UA-cam.
Pahahah
My day always perks up when these videos show up. Thank you guys for manifesting the community I enjoy so much.
Thank you for being part of the community! <3
Hello Magnus, amazing tutorial! I just had one question: What size brush are you using in the video?
Howdy! He uses a 00 brush, this is the Artis Opus Series S 00.
Roy C approves this message
Congratulations everyone! A community win 🎉
Thanks for taking the time with the video, even though you guys are both a bit under the weather. ❤
It has genuinly been a joy to host this in every aspect
I finally get it.. I thought the bounce light was somehow skipping from the initial highlight, which sound bananas and why it never clicked.. but it's the reflection of things around the character.. so a dark stripe could be a tree or a fence post and larger, lighter highlights are a white wall or something brighter
Exactly!
amazing video once again! Thank you very much for making these <3
Thank you for watching them :D
Very cool! I learned some tricks I didn't know, thank you!
Happy to help!
the thing with stippling is, the concept is well known and really obvious in practice, but nobody ever goes into any detail about how thinned the paint needs to be, how much water to use, how wet the brush is when applying the paint....it always seems to be this bit that trips me up, largely because when you're painting at such a small scale in such minute quantities the moisture element is quite difficult to control. Ive also tried stippling using a dry brush and its the same problem. Any ideas chaps?
This is a great question and a great point. My personal preference is to have the paint at slightly thinner than layer consistency, so with my AKs, that's about 50/50 paint to water. My brush is voided to remove all excess, just like I'd do when glazing. I prefer to build up the marks with more subtlety, taking my time while still being able to see new lines/ marks appear. Let me know if this helps at all!
@GitGudPainting awesome, I really appreciate your response, I'll definitely be trying that tomorrow!! Occasionally you can experiment and stumble upon something that really works, but you have to have that foundation and solid principles to build on or at least fall back on...advice from an expert is super helpful!!!
Hey guys! I figured out, right a few days ago, the importance of time constraint challenges and, at the same time, you air an episode where you talk about that very topic! I think this might be a sign from the painting gods... although, if that's the case, they are speaking to me in a more subtle way than they do with Magnus 😂
We're all communing with the elden ones.
@GitGudPainting I hope I won't be the one that transforms into the Cauliflower man! XD
If Magnus had any guts, he would match that mustache.
oh shit, the namedrop in the end actually startled me lmao! I'm so excited to see the 8h challenge results!! Thank you so much for all you're doing! I love your podcast and videos <3
Thank you Cryo!
I've learned more watching 3 of your videos than i have learned watching 3-4 months of other garbage. Seriously underrated channel.
Thank you so much! Glad you found them helpful!
Seriously underrated channel. Ive learned more watching a few of your videos than i have learned watching 3-4 months of other garbage.
Finally a actual video about brush control. UA-cam is now searching through loads of advertisements and click bait garbage.
Your Podcast is awesome, I love listining to your conversations while painting my minis! Greetings from Germany!
Thank you so much for saying!
Great episode!
Thank you Roy
Hi guys! Typically I am not leaving any comments on YT. But this time I want to thank you for the first part of this video. At the moment I have 2 y old and newborn at home and it's sometimes tough. Not talking about painting because there's not any, but life itself. We sometimes forget that everyone has some worse moments/ days. Thanks and lots of health for you and your families! Ps: I'm really enjoying your content, good work :)
Man, life just happens. It can be really tough wanting to paint/hobby but simply bot having the time or energy. But family always comes first. Grats on the newborn, hope you guys are all happy and healthy
Exactly what magnus has put, life comes first and that's how it is sometimes. Congratulations on the baby! Enjoy the time because it'll be gone before you know but don't feel bad about missing painting. ❤️
I thought for sure a "A virus can't spread during spooky season because all the mask" joke was coming.
Damn, missed opportunity
Thank you for all the good advice on this vid.
Glad it was helpful!
Hey guys! It's always great hearing from you, especially when you do the dad talks! Since I will also join the club very soon, I find this topic extremely valuable nowadays!
Good luck joining the club! It's a wild ride but very worth it ❤️
The only time where I get 8 hours of sleep and wake up to find joy in everything is when I've set achievable goals and been able to complete them, or in some magical cases exceeded expectations lol.
Sleep makes all things better.
I don't have a DSLR, but I'll try this on my old point and shoot. Anything has to be better than my phone pics, right?
It will be! The phone is such a nightmare for post processing, even a point and shoot will have a big enough sensor to be beneficial
Some incredible work guys!
Super helpful! Curious if you could share the specific lens you’ve used? I have a kit lens that falls within your recommended range but I’ve been wondering also about macro lenses and if they’d work for miniature photography. Cheers
Yes of course! I use a Panasonic Lumix G 42.5mm f/1.7
Would you mind letting us know where you got the LED lights at the front?
Sure! It's a VIJIM VL120 RGB Video Light from Amazon. I think you can pretty much search LED Video Light and get something good these days!
@@GitGudPainting amazing, thank you :)
Sweet tutorial thx dude
No problem!
Good explaination. It'realy clear (so reduce the time or increse the exposure.?)
When we remove ISO from the equation, we're balancing shutter speed with our aperture. As the aperture opens up (going lower on the f-stop) we need to increase our shutter speed, and vice versa.
Euh.. when I write that it "was clear", it was a kind if métaphore.. your explaination was good at the first Time 😅" @@GitGudPainting
Great vid! If I can suggest a free photo editor, I use Photoscape X and it works great for editing miniature photos ;)
Fantastic - finally the why these settings matter broken down in a way I can understand. Thank you.
Glad it helped! That you for commenting!
Fantastic video, explained very clearly :) Very few go over what each variable actually does and just give vague recommendations, so to get that much info crammed into about 10 minutes and digestible is really well done I think it might be worth some further discussion on backdrops and how to set them up - mainly focusing on getting pure white/black (or close to it) without overexposing the mini/backdrop respectively, and potentially something on focus stacking as well, but those are more advanced topics so I totally understand skipping them
Absolutely! There was so much to cover that I wanted to keep it tight, but I'll certainly be covering this in a future video. I've had some good links to free focus stacking tools so I'll probably demo one of those as I don't want people to have to learn Adobe stuff if possible.
i would love to see a follow on of this of how to record yourself painting minis.
Good idea! I can definitely whip something together on this!
Excellent. White balance is probably the only thing you're missing.
Yeah, I kept it off on the assumption that most people would be using AWB, but it'll definitely be included in the follow-up!
@@GitGudPainting Both white balance on the camera, but also using similar color temperatures in your lights. One lamp at 6500k and others at 2500K would give results a beginner might not expect. But you did a very good job distilling what is a very complex series of topics down to something digestible that both shows what you should do, along with an explanation of why.
Just one thing to add: a Lumix GH5 is a mirrorless not a DSLR
Ha this is a very good point! Think my brain decided to transpose DSLR for Camera
Amazing thank you
Thank you for watching!
Not got a DSLR and I don't really think I will buy one for just taking pics of minis seeing as I do not have a following at all so it just makes no real sense to get one. That said this info was very valuable overall and can be applied to phones as well.
I get it! It's not for everyone and it depends entirely what you want out of the hobby!
@GitGudPainting I would love to get a following and make it into something, but that's brutal to do.
Hands down best video on this topic! 🙌
Agreed!😊
Agreed. I've worked dozens of videos on this topic. Best explanation I've seen.
Thank you for saying so!
Bruce, dude, mate, my guy! This is brilliant!!! This is everything I've learned over the years, and in exactly the way I could dream to explain it and show it whenever I get asked and if I had proper time to write it down or even film it. I'll recommend this video literally every time I get asked about miniature photography and share it whenever I can! Thank you so much for your effort and attention to detail with this complex topic! (personally I've found a light source angling *up* from below the mini helps as well, especially when the top down one is powerful)
Thank you so much man! I'll definitely have to do a follow-up, both to address the amount of stuff I didn't cover and to add in all the super helpful tips that folks are sharing!
The joy of 8 hours of sleep cracked me up!!
It's okay, he's not replicated the feat since.
Great show chaps! It's great listening to your mellifluous tones while painting ☺
See now I can't wait to see what you're working on 🔥
