Zinger Coors Cycling
Приєднався 23 сер 2021
The Colorado-based Red Zinger Bicycle Classic (1975--1979) quickly became America's premiere stage race. Starting from two days it blossomed in its next iteration as the Coors International Bicycle Classic (1980--1988) as America's National Tour, and a 16-day multi-state race that behind the sport's three great Tours of France/Italy/Spain became the 4th largest race in the world. It distinguished itself as a unique omnium of time trials, brutal high-altitude climbing and short course criteriums. NBC, CBS and ESPN covered the event over the years, a feature film was shot at the race and in the 80's sold $1.5 million in race-branded merchandise all over the world.
HIGHLIGHTS! Historic '79 Indoor Cycling Classic -- Recipe for Disaster?
Treacherously steep 50° banking at near 40 mph -- highlights from this historic cycling battle, restored footage to 4K from the very first cycling ever on ESPN, 1979. Wacky action from the two-day in Denver with a rare glimpse of a just 18 year-old, riding this insane bike track for the first time -- 7 years later Greg LeMond would win his first of three Tours de France. BUT...was putting road racers like Greg vs seasoned track pros on these small boards a recipe for disaster?

1981 Coors Classic Ultimate Battle LeMond vs Soviets
Cool race and great story.
So awesome to see these legendary riders on this track that I had the honor and pleasure to ride in the spring of 1980 when it came to the Michigan State University campus (where Roger Young went to school). The Meingast brothers did very well and the Stetina brothers were there also. So awesome to see Greg LeMond taking to the track racing so quickly and easily. Learning to get onto that track was quite terrifying but then was easily the most fun I’ve ever had on a bicycle.
talkin' 'bout my g-g-generation
Greg LeMond could do just about anything on a bike. I saw him win all three of his Nevada City Classic wins. The Reno Rocket.
Soviet team.. whose success lies in rampant doping. This was outstanding. Even though the story is different, I see how "American Flyers" was inspired by this. Great to see a young Greg at work.
The Queen Stage and Lemond goes for a $350 intermediate sprint... W H A T?
Thank you
Fantastic
Love the music!
5:33 😂😂😂
American Flyers, Kevin Costner. I love that movie
Gary Mulder!! I rode BMX he rode road bikes!!!
Nice to see Greg freely admit that he was initially scared of that track and the racing. No bravado, no boasting, just, yikes, this stuff is scary. No relating to his ascension to the top of the sport, but here,, for sure, I totally relate. I recall lots of times like that with friends on bikes, racing and dueling and daring each other. And it meant a lot to face them and not back down.
Alfredo Binda toe straps and $50 Preems... "We've come a long way Baby"
So true
Is that Eric Heiden in a 7-Eleven jersey?
Absolutely! Fresh off 5 golds on ice skates. The 7-Eleven sponsorship was largely built around his prominence.
@@zingercoorscycling9338 Probably could only ride a stout Columbus SP frame too. At 6'1 I ride a early 1980s 62cm C/C Colnago Super that I think is also SP and not an SL tube frame.
This upload is over 3 years old but almost all the comments are from the past 10 days or so. I guess the algorithm finally picked up the channel after 3 or 4 years😂 🤘🏻🇬🇧
Loved the video! I'm an avid cycling fan of almost 50 years. I just had this video pop up in my "recommended". I'm going to watch all you uploads tonight and tomorrow. Glad I found the channel 🤘🏻🇬🇧
Greg was a beast...
These guys are sprinting for $50.
I love to see these beginnings of American road racing, Greg, Andy, Gavin and George... Notice the pain on the faces as riders cross the finish lines! Funny how we don't see that today in the professional peloton.
Don't forget Davis Phinney. He won 18 Coors Classic stages. That guy was a crit killer too.
The 80s just had such a unique special feel to it.
I grew up racing on Fred Cappy's 7-11 Velodrome in Colorado Springs. Great to see this.
When Colorado was still a paradise.
I loved going to watch the Coors Classic! I was a teenager then, and along with my neighborhood friends enjoyed riding our first "10 speeds". The Vail, Tivoli, and Boulder criteriums where a favorite.
Jim McKay was a fantastic announcer!!
This is like "American Flyers"
American Flyer's, is made after this race. The actor named Cannibal was a real person, and the Russians did come that one year in real life. Watch it once a year.

When bicycle racing was simple, one bike, everyone had similar frames, components and gearing. Truely let the best legs win!
I had Galli components on my Gitane. The Red Zinger inspired me to buy a Peugeot CFX-10 frame and build it up with Italian components. I still have it today., Campagnolo NR/SR ‘early ‘80’s!
I hope Jacob got reunited with his parents.
8:13 That's Héctor "El Gallo" Pérez. Great rider and amazing person. Such a fun guy to be around! Mexican Olympian in '88 too.
Це цікаво.
Fabulous, I started riding in 1974 so Coors was The race that competed with the Tour for our attention
Neither of them know yet that Davis will become the greatest American sprinter.
*Road sprinter that is*
Cool blast from the past. Love all the retro equipment and gear.
Roger Young works at Los Angeles velodrome
Я не знав, що була така гонка!
Me, either.
Cool classic is no longer. But ua-cam.com/video/iwmLEkp6A9w/v-deo.htmlsi=ApfNbjgURM4lBjXh. Is every year still.

Them where the days
That "two day wheel change" was epic. Son, Rae Dawn Chong cleaned your clock!
What a beautiful race. Thank you Michael, and everyone who contributed to the Red Zinger / Coors Classic.
Look at the speed they cycling !!!! Steel frames and forks, Campagnolo and shimano components ! You who think todays carbone shit are faster !? Think again !!!!
If I had known about this, I would have insisted that I be a competitor! Bobby Allen should have informed me!
Lol..." we didn't order the spaghetti"!
Love this, but need to point out one thing - Greg, while amazing, was not the first US World Champion of the modern era. The first WC Champ (of the modern era) was Audrey McElmury, 1969 - Brno in the former Czechoslovakia. She was an fantastic rider and a great person. Also surprised that Liggett didn't mention why the Madison is called the Madison - it was also called "the American Race" because it was first run in, you guessed it, Madison Square Garden (NYC) back in the Ancient Era.
Connie and family always nice to us Boulder locals, when we sacked their groceries or worked with them in healthcare. I only wish a safe, warm bed for Rebecca these days. And some peace.
If you’ve never ridden a velodrome, it’s amazingly scary. Kids take to it better than adults because they don’t realize what gravity is.
"It's picked up despite Breaking Away" LOL .
That was too funny. Although I must admit as a Hoosier kid addicted to his 10-speed, with friends who cut some of that limestone, and family that farmed the area, the movie was huge to me! I was picked up to ride the “Little 500” but didn’t go through with it. I did ride a road race with Dave Blase in the 80s and we had a nice chat.
Man, Roger Young was a beast!!
The front wheel lift was quite the cheeky move!
I must be old?! I remember this ! Cycling in the snow-but inside ! This was the beginning, and all there was !
I watched the celestial seasons / red zinger race in San Francisco. Look at his arms and shoulders, Lemond was a stud even at 18!
