914 vs 911 Track Contact Incident 2015-01-17
In-car video from my 914-6 track car at Streets of Willow on 1/17/2015. An apparent n00b driver who should not have been in my run group, and probably not even cleared for this event, came into the inside of turn one WAY too hot and missed the turn-in point, bouncing off my car's left door. This was a time-trial/time-attack with open passing but only in the straights meaning passes needed to be fully completed before a turn. (Unlike in full wheel to wheel racing.) Accordingly the other driver got a 13/13 and I got an f'ed up door.

This is a practice race session during a POC Racers Clinic weekend at Buttonwillow, March 11-12, 2017. We did several of these where we had multiple race starts and mini-sprint races during a practice session. Several including this one were started "Australian Pursuit" style with the slowest cars in front, fastest in back. It's pretty fun! This Clinic was an intensive workshop of classroom and...

This is the full ~10 lap final race of our POC Racers Clinic weekend at Buttonwillow, March 11-12, 2017. This was an intensive workshop of classroom and on-track exercises, including multiple practice starts and sprint races. Two of these are required, plus significant prior time-trial / time-attack experience, to earn a POC Cup Race License. I got my provisional license today with my "rookie d...

This is a full session of lapping at Willow Springs (big track) in the faster POC Time Attack Group, mostly experienced drivers, but not much traffic overall. This is NOT a W2W race, but open passing was permitted in this group. There is a brief full-course black flag in the middle, which I cut shorter, but otherwise this is unedited 720p 60fps GoPro footage. The car is a highly-modified 914, w...

Mixed-class 20-minute practice race at the end of a Racer's Clinic (licensing school). Not terribly interesting as I was tip-toeing on bald old slicks in damp conditions, and the field was pretty small for this enormous 3.4 mile track. Basically the higher-powered aero cars ran away at the start, and I ran away from the pack of Boxsters, then just ran several clean laps without traffic.

In-car Footage from my Porsche 914-6 "914R" at Laguna Seca 2014-06-29. This was a Porsche Owners Club event in conjunction with Competent Motorsports and the Pirelli GT3 Cup race series. I competed in the Time Attack (Time Trial) group. The car is a highly-modified 1973 914 2.0 converted to a six-cylinder 2.7L powerplant with twin-plug ignition, Weber 46 carbs, headers, short gears, limited-sli...

Two laps in-car during the 9/11/2011 Porsche Owners Club (POC) PDS-series event at Streets of Willow in Rosamond, CA. This is a continuous lapping time-trial format event, where the best lap time is used from the day's sessions. My car was running terribly on this day so I was slower than usual, but still had fun dicing with the 911's and Boxsters. The car is a heavily-modified 914 with a twin-...
Flat Porsche and Weber IDF is the best sound.
Wow
4-wheel sport bike ... love it! Had a '73 914 2-litre, and even that was a blast.
Good race!... 😉👍🏾
That was a nice run. Mechanical music!
Someday I’ll mic the engine compartment in stereo
Great video! Shes sounds awesome!
Thanks! Very fun car, will be 50 years old next month!
Love the 914!
I never raced my 914 but remember how incredibly fun they are to drive; even on the street. Had a '76 2.0 and a '71 1.7 that were bone stock but still really fun.
I agree! Daily-drove a different mostly stock '73 for several years years ago, and it was fun, reliable and even got good gas mileage.
Enivrant, j'adore le tracé de ce circuit,le son du flat 6 un regal
i really need a 6.
Thank you for sharing - would love to see a full walkaround of your 914-6 and what you've done with it!
Thanks! I’ve got a pretty detailed build thread on the 914world web forum FYI, this car’s been a 20 year project so far
I like the slightly flared fenders to support the larger tires
Nice exit on those curves.
Drove a 914 6 once on the backroads in California in the early 1980s. It stayed flat in the turns with no lean and pretty predictable handling. Much better than a twitchy 911
Oh man , my dream car !!! Those are the coolest and baddest little sports cars ever built!!!! Would love to hav e even the 2.0L 4cylinder , with alot of goodies thrown in it 😁 Once saw a 2.0L completely annihilate a Datsun 260Z in a drag race!!!! The Daysun came pulling up next to the 914 , and he was revving his engine up a bunch of times , and the 914 just sat there cool and quiet , but when the light turned green they took off , and within a quarter mile or a little more that 914 already had a good 150 yards on the Z , and he never let up , you could hear them a mile out and the 914 was so far ahead that I couldn't believe how bad he beat the Z , because when the Z was revving his engine , it sounded really really mean . Needless to say , that just gave me a whole new perspective on the 914's 👍😊
Thanks! Quite a few people have been surprised by 914s in tight twisty stuff in particular.
Very nice!
The SOUNDS.
Ah life of speed done well, 914/6 perfection!
Still the BEST 914/6 POV on UA-cam!! That Sound and gearbox!!! NOTHING to beat that !! I’ve watched every single 914/6 video on UA-cam, this remains the all time favorite!! Certainly the pilot knows his car and the track.. Laguna Seca also on of the nicest tracks if you hook it up right.
Not saying anything about this car in video. Just a story. In 1985 I wanted one these when I was 15 turning 16. Found one in for sale ads. Talked my dad into taking me to look at it. He told me they are junk. Of course I wouldn’t listen to him. When we neared neighborhood , we drove past the Porsche broken down on the side of road. We just kept on driving and went home.
Lol your dad spoke some truth as a lot of these were neglected and rusted away... also the original fuel injection systems could be a PITA. Cheers
Great video! I'm getting ready to rebuild my 2.7, could you tell me more about your engine build?
Thank you! The engine is a pretty robust build on a 7R mag case with around 11:1 C/R, twin-plug, DRC cams, Weber 46s, headers - makes 235hp to the wheels @ 7500. I have a pretty detailed build thread on 914world.com which I will keep updating periodically as the car keeps evolving (had it 18 years so far)
She scoots ...
Super car and we'll driven
Sweet car .. Love it
You stick to the outside way too much.
Hey, really nice 914 mate, how can i get those cool flares to my car too? Thanks!!! -Timo
Hey - Thanks! The flares are from Tangerine Racing Products (Chris Foley) www.tangerineracing.com/exterior_panels.htm
I did this in my 1974 914 2.0 and it was the most legal fun I have ever had! This is fun to watch. Thank you!
Thanks! It is super addicting.
Awesome driving. 914 in action! That ONE corner was a bit slippery, rats.
I can never get tired of the flat six sound. I hope my car sounds that good but in Stereo! ua-cam.com/video/adocRB6Ntbs/v-deo.html
The 914 is considered to be the best handling Porsche ever built.
Back in the 70's it certainly out-handled most other cars out there, arguably the 911 included. And look at how many of Porsche's "real race cars" are mid-engined, despite the obvious racing success of the 911/935. Nowadays the Cayman GT4 would be the new 914-6GT equivalent, IMO.
Great Job!
What did you get the motor from
Really neat how your steering, and gear changes can be seen as the reflection in the windshield, in the otherwise useless sky section of the view. There must be no dash board on that thing, or the windshield angle. I have never seen that before.
Yep - no dash cover, very minimal interior, but also just luck of the GoPro angle
Awesome sound! Awesome drive! So smooth down the hill. It's always so tricky. You must have some good suspension to hug the road! What have you got?
Hi Ray, sorry I just saw this - I have a full build sheet but suffice to say it does have a very stiff, coil-over suspension with some trick bits (zero rubber bushings), chassis/tub stiffening, and 10" soft slick tires...
That sound! Great video.
There's something special about the people that go to Laguna Seca. It's just classy and the drivers bring classy cars as a result. No drifting or whatever nonsense flashy driving
My dad used to drive there
and he was in a porche owners club
You are getting some GOOD sounds out of the 2.7L.....nice driving too!
I am a Die-Hard 911 fan. In 1980 I had a "Rich Girlfriend" that was Very Into cars. She owned LOTS of cars...including (of all things) a 1959 Chevy Biscayne...1968 Ford GT500...and a 1973 Carrera RS. That Porsche was amazing.! White with Red. If she still owns it, it is worth a fortune. Anyway.....I always thought the 914 was a Very Good and Very Under appreciated car. Nice to see yours on the track. It Sounds Fantastic...!! I understand the reasons for lengthening Laguna Seca...but what a different track it is now. There was a saying drivers use to like to throw around the ranks of The SCCA....."Sears Point and Laguna Seca.....Seca separates the men from the boys". Both tracks were their own thing...some guys preferred one over the other for various reasons. If you have never been to Laguna Seca...you Cannot Appreciate how STEEP the corkscrew is.....WAY more than what shows on film. In a Formula Ford, you were flat-out from Turn 9 to Turn 4. Not even sure what Turn 9 is now days.....about Turn 14 maybe.? Nice Video.....Thanks
manual clutch such a pain very slow gear shifting
. . .and not everyone can learn to heel and toe a rev synced double clutch downshift.
As an original owner of a new Ravenna Green 1973 914-1.7, I thank you for the ride in your hotrod! Sticks like glue too; I remember well . . .
sounds great good run!
No more videos of this awesome car other than the two already posted? Loved them both. I'm a mid-engined Porsche nut myself!
+Shaun Collins Thank you! I have a bunch of raw video I need to edit and post up. Will try to get to that sometime soon!
Chris Campbell That would be great! I love the sound of that modified air cooled flat 6. I've been considering a 914. But the values in the UK are far higher when you convert USD to GBP :( I could buy a mint 996 for the price of a very good 914 2.0 four cylinder. I've got one of the very first Boxster's and I'm now searching for that mint condition 1998 Porsche 911 - one of the first water cooled. So I have the 2 cars that saved Porsche from extinction :) they're bound to hike up in value over the next 10 years. Especially the early Boxster. Mine is engine 007! 😎
+Chris Campbell Please get some more up soon...you're great driver..I loved how you caught up to and passed that boxster at the end of the video!
+Van Lurton Thanks! I found several more that seem worth posting -- now just to find time to edit and post!
Just beautiful! Loved all the 914's growing up in the 70's. I like watching the driver's actions in the reflection of the windshield. Well done!
Love the 914/6. Very much a race car-like layout, and ridiculously grippy handling, especially in the back coming out of turns. Real confidence builder.
Sorted.... Who built the engine?
Thanks - engine was originally built by Mike Bruns (JB Racing) in Florida, then most recently rebuilt and significantly upgraded by Galen Bieker (Werks II Motorsports) in Burbank, CA. The car has been a 12-year project so far, with 4 different engine configs along the way.
914, Porsche's secret, it's still under development!
Great stuff all the way! From all of us here in GB
This is fantastic ninefourteensix. One of my all time favorite cars on my all-time favorite track. Your 914 is so well sorted. I'm lucky to have become the owner of Marks914 (on 914world.com) sbc 302 dz powerd '72 and I'm hoping to be able to track the car in the next few years.
what suspension set up are you running? In the process of getting a '76 914 and am doing research on upgrades....Awesome car by the way!
Thank you Ron! I have a detailed build thread on 914world.com and if you haven't yet, I highly recommend heading to that site to help with your research and connecting with other 914 fanatics. In a nutshell, in front the car has 22mm hollow torsion bars, a big Smart Racing swaybar, raised and decambered strut spindles, needle bearings and monoballs and a widened track (spacers). In back it has 300lb coilovers, Elephant Racing polybronze bushings, and a factory swaybar. Struts/shocks are custom valved Bilsteins. The chassis is fully caged and heavily reinforced as well. Cheers and good luck with yours!
+Jamie Porterfield Sure, I am campbellcj on 914world, Pelican, 6Speed and Rennlist cjcam on twitter, flickr and 500px @cjcam930 on instagram Here's that build thread: www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?act=ST&f=2&t=133908
LIKE A BOSS!!!!
Your driving and car are awesome. i really like the body kit on your your kit which one is it.
Thanks Al! The flares are from Tangerine Racing in CT (USA). They are hand-formed from original factory steel fenders. The various fiberglass bits are from Getty, GT Racing and Rennspeed.
glorious sound. lovely looking car too. thanks for sharing
