    Very nice review! I have an identical guitar which I love, I picked mine up at Sunrise in Fayetteville as well (RIP, Sunrise, we miss you.) I haven't warmed to the P90's too much and find the middle switch position positively honky and bad sounding. I do like the neck and bridge positions okay but I miss my Burstbucker Pro sound I had with an LP Studio I sold a few years ago and I often wonder how those would sound with that Bigsby. Have you replaced them yet or are you hanging with the Phat Cats? Do you yearn for a PAF in that thing like I do? Enjoyed the video, thanks!

    I'd put something with plenty of thermal mass under it, or put it on the top rack (assuming the top heating element doesn't get enabled in that mode?). I've warmed my oven to just 170 degrees to help cure epoxy or sterilize lumber, and the bottom surface of the oven still rapidly approaches 400 degrees, even with that low setting. The thermostat is most likely to be at the top of the oven, and there's a heat gradient to worry about. The convection fan would normally help smooth it all out, but you may be creating a pocket of much hotter air under your slab. If your target is 360F, I wouldn't be surprised if the bottom of your slab is at about 450F; right on the verge of catching fire. Your oven may be different from mine though.

    To complete this technique you'd also have to incorporate alternating between palm muted open strings and the tapped equivalent, to give it a wacky rythm and feel. Great stuff!

  • @michaelyolch79
    @michaelyolch79 3 місяці тому

    Hmm...where did you get the specs i.e. 360 degrees for 2 hours? I have to believe that varies quite a bit based on wood type/thickness etc. And I feel like the warping is caused by trying to roast a body so quickly. I'm thinking that professional guitar companies do a great deal more than this demo to roast their necks and bodies.

    • @EmtonGuitars
      @EmtonGuitars 3 місяці тому

      @@michaelyolch79 well of course they do. They use a vacuum chamber that avoid combustions combustion and not a home oven that will need to be used later that day so they can create Maillard reactions over long periods of time. With my neck blanks, which are 1” and not 2”, I am able to get caramelization at lower temperatures over longer times. I also think that the warping is likely due to three things: 1. Much wider than a neck blank so there were knots, cracks, etc which allow more wood movement. 2. Moisture content. I didn’t use a moisture meter on either but a slab usually will be less dry than a 4/4 or even 6/4 piece of kiln dried lumber just due to thickness and size. 3. Temperature as you said. I think ideally I would stick around 300 for longer periods of time. The chosen temperature was far enough below the combustion temperature of hard maple as elsewhere on the internet.

    • @michaelyolch79
      @michaelyolch79 3 місяці тому

      @@EmtonGuitars Yeah...I wasn't being mean or anything...just asking questions because it's very hard to find the most accurate procedures for roasting. Heck, maybe they even have bodies in large clamps or heavy presses to eliminate warpage and what not. I'm a little obsessed with this all the sudden bcoz I played a new Fender American Professional II yesterday that had a roasted PINE body and it was glorious!!! Weighed nothing and was resonant beyond belief! UGH! So...I see places where I can purchase PINE telecaster bodies, some that are even chambered! And I'd like to get one and roast it correctly. :)

    Its called legato, not hammer ons. Hammer ons have a note thats picked and then you hammer on the next note. Legato is when you do what youre talking about and fret notes on the fret board without picking them at all. Side note. Not trying to be a dick.

    • @EmtonGuitars
      @EmtonGuitars 9 місяців тому

      When you play in a legato style it just means that the vast majority of the notes don’t have an attack and are slurred, which can be a slide or a hammer-on on the guitar. Legato means “tied together” implying two notes or more without space between the notes as is the case with staccato playing. A hammer on from nowhere still generates an attack just without action from your right hand. The left hand generates the attack. This isn’t legato in any sense as the whole point is to play separate distinct notes. This style just allows fast staccato playing with wider intervals across multiple strings without complicated picking required.

    Hahah that tongue action at the end ! This is exactly how I learned selective picking. The next steps to use more advanced selective picking would be to use multiple strings AND also throwing in more notes that aren't groups of 3 same notes. Do some pull offs that lead in to the selectivepicking pattern. Skip strings, or group the 2's and 3's over multiple strings instead of 3 notes on the same string. Chord and double-stop patterns are cool to use. Using regular triplets inbetween the selective picked flurries to get the low (or high) open string chugs as well. This technique is incredible and feels really good to do
