Great job. Can you BMW exhausts

That's a nice 5 LTR mate
@@kenbotham8222 thanks 👍 mate!
Was this a Victorian car? I owned the same car, colour and year back in the day. My rego was Exx xx3 (hidden) Curious to know if by chance it is the same car.
Hi Danny, it's a SA car originally and the original rego started with a V going off the books. It's been in VIC since 2018 to my knowledge. Hope that helps. Cheers, Gus
@ ok cool. IA great car back in the day and I enjoyed driving it. I sold it and moved onto a VN Calais 5 litre which was a joy to drive too. Amazing that they are all collectable now. I remember saying that back then but people would laugh. Who’s laughing now 😁
@@DannyAntonopoulosYeah nice one 👍 They were a great car to have back then and even more so now... But with a price tag to match! My first car was a white manual hdt vn V6 aero in mint condition. So Ive always had a soft spot for them hence the Spac 😊
Nice job mate! Should be a b@m shifter installer for the iron lion fans! You in Brisbane?
awesome video mate! I made own illuminated shift indicator light on my 5L converted VS. Only cost me about $10 in parts and half a day in labour lol.
Nice one👌what did you use mate?
How do u find the cylinder distribution? I’m looking at this one or the port injection kit.
Hi mate, can't speak on the cylinder distribution as I was only monitoring 1 cylinder.
Hey mate what size push rod are you running 8.700”?
Hi mate, 8.900" from memory to get the right geometry and stem contact pattern.
Nice work, loving the build ❤
@@Oszmz thanks mate 👍
My little 304 just pulled 440hp and 480lbft at the wheels with 10psi of boost. Stock bottom end with a turbo cam. The torque curve just shoots up instantly on boost.
Wingless boys will buy the engine got about 5 VR ones myself
Sorry mate the engine sold a few months ago.
That Iron Lion loves to roar! 🦁 Sound much better than LS motors and probably go as hard (without having to make as much power) too.
For sure! Thanks mate.
What’s the specs on the V8 you have slipped into the engine bay?
Hi Mate, engine specs listed in this video link. ua-cam.com/video/Q6GJgrzyFZA/v-deo.htmlsi=v-s529rk2aFwEupK
Looking good!
Thanks!
What did the motor build set you back mate?
Hi Mate, I did all the machine work and assembly myself so not as much as normal. Having said that, the manifold, loom, haltech and all the efi gear cost as much if not more than what everything inside the motor cost lol. Alot of coin to make 400+hp but damn it sounds good and not another LS 👍
I reckon that bay looks smick for a car that age. You were wise not to paint it
Agreed 👍 plus I reckon all the bad bits will be hidden once everything goes back on.
looks like the poem chamber inlets could be enlarged for more air flow and power
That's a solid number for a 304 👍
Thanks mate!
Add some volume /diameter to that snirkel and port/ blend the ports into t/b. Ideally an inch larger than t/b size. Bellmouth entry of snorkel, then bug airbox with filter. And you should get closer back to 426hp. 👍
Planning to ditch the snorkel and get a VCM VT OTR to work with the setup 😎
Larry Perkins KNEW how to build a Holden V8 Bathurst 1993, won qualifying, Won the Race, AWESOME everyone else was using Chev, NOT LP!! 👍👍👍👍
Nice to see a'5 litre vid for a change!. Nice job. I have a 530hp 5.0 rover v8. Evolved over time
Extremely useful...
Glad it was helpful!
very nice. i bought an S Pac wagon new in 91. Believe me the V6 was a revelation compared to what you got from the General before the VN.
I cant find this part.
Hi Mate, which part?
@@com-mod304the hobbs boost pressure switch. I’ve planning to do this way for my water injection
Nice video, clever idea using the tyre to test
Thanks mate. Seemed the easiest way at the time
how did this only make 350 on 10+ psi ?
Good to see people still playing with Holden V8's. Sorry to see the blow up. I think you were running too much timing. My stock bottom end 304 with just a cam made 380 rwhp though a 4000rpm converter on 10psi boost and I was running 20 degrees timing. The motor did powercruise and other events and when I pulled it down it was perfect apart from worn cam bearings. It's a shame to here you're moving on from it
Mean
That's mint ! Nice buy and great base for what's to come.. I'm happy to hear you didn't mention an LS conversion :)
Hi Mate, no LS stuff in my garage I love my 5ltrs too much 👍
dyno video of it making around 350whp showed a AFR of 17.0! thats so lean it cant not cause damage especially with boost.. ring gap is a big thing for boost, heat and the extra pressure too!
The torque 😮
Ooshhh
Hopefully just a head gasket I feel for you especially after all that good work. I would recommend a intercooler after short period of boost your intake charge temperature would be through the roof especially on those front pistons.
Awesome stuff mate she's tidy as, it's the exact build that I want, clean white VR/VS with a snail bolted to the almighty Aussie iron lion..
Thanks Rhys! The turbo setup is for sale if you are interested.
Hi, how have those thin mild steel manifolds held up? I thought they might crack being thin.
Hi Mate, I've had the headers/crossover on and off a few times now and no issues so far.
That's typical of insufficient ring end gap for that application 😢
Maybe. I Think it was a combination of a few things. Water/methanal, timing and detonation aren't forgiving to cast pistons.
Don't forget you had nos on too didn't allow for it boost ,nos cast piston ring cap . You got lucky just put another piston in it wind the boost down take the nos off it. Build a real motor in the meantime.
@@Jimmyk63 It's a water methanol plate not NOS. Thanks for the advice lol
What was your ring gap when the engine was built?
@@busarob1969 .024" on the tops. All other pistons looked fine.
Bugger! Definitely a lucky break though haha. Curious what rings you used? Acl supplied in the kit ?? Im guessing they wouldn't provide recommendations for gap considering they arent intended for that application.. but the ls guys teach us a bit here running near ot at 1000hp on factory pistons.. most pro advice ive seen on turbos is 7 thou per bore inch and i know Richard holdener uses 28'ish.. whether that would have made the difference who knows. Cool project mate i hope someone keen can take it from you and give it a new life
Hi Mate, I used Hastings chrome moly rings. I'm tipping the manufacturing process of the newer LS factory pistons are slightly better than the 2nd hand 30 year old ACL pistons i had lying around were haha. That motor you mentioned makes twice the horsepower and boost of my motor so I'm not convinced my .024" / .025" gap was that small for what i was running. Also there was no scaping or pick-up marks on any of the bores from tight rings either. I should've just put a set of forgies in it simple as that haha. I've had a few people contact me about the setup hopefully it goes to a good home :)
Sorry to hear that mate unfortunate Any thoughts on what could have caused it
Not 100% sure. Cast pistons not suite for the job, ring gap slightly too small combined with some detonation on a dyno run did it I'm guessing.
Nice set up What valve springs did you use
Thanks mate. Running COMP cams springs part number 941-26. No machining required and have 130lbs on the seat and 365lbs on the nose no float issues 👍
@@com-mod304 thanks mate I am looking into a cam as well but don't really know what to get .. I am glad I come across your Chanel as I am doing everything my self had lt1 ready for mine so glad I seen this.. good to see someone else keeping the 304 alive appreciate any tips
Most likely broken ring land between the two piston rings.
Yeah maybe. I'm hoping to pull the motor out/down next weekend and will post a video as soon as I find the issue 👍
Were those rings gapped for boost?
I can't remember exactly what I gapped them at but I do remember giving them a few extra thou. I will measure a couple when I pull the motor down.
Compressed air via spark plug hole will seat the valves and make it easier to drop your collets in.. Like the $35 LS compressor tool 👍🏼
Hi thanks for the video,I'm looking at putting the same cam in my Vn 304 and have not done it before so this was a good help to see how to change the springs....can I just ask to put new valve stem seals in can you do it like this while you have the springs out do they just slide out and slide down the new one? or is there more to it? Cheers
Hi Mate, if your heads are already machined for positive stem seals then yes you can just slide them off and replace them at the same time as switching out the springs.
@@com-mod304 thanks but they are just standard heads
Spewing mate unlucky
Subbed mate , just started doing this to my VQ
I have a VT roller in my HZ Premier, wouldn't mind beefing it up a bit, ill check out your other videos
Thanks mate.
Was it a head gasket?
Nope! At least not the passenger head, thinking I've broken the rings on #2. Will post an update video shortly mate.
Ahh yes…
Nice mate 👍🏻
Good video mate, fingers crossed it’s just a head head gasket.
Thanks mate. Will post an update video shortly
These old 5 litter 304 don't have enough clamping force on heads they use to blow on small shots of nitrous years ago even when not old best of luck hopefully just Head gasket
Thanks Neil. Pushing the good old 5litres is the challenge that's why I love them, if I wanted an easy project I'd build an LS lol.
Very solid build mate, cannot really fault the combo on paper.. don't know much about the oring gaskets but aren't you also meant to cut both block and head mating surfaces? Ihave read people running standard felpros in ls1s etc over 15psi for years..
Thanks Geoff, I believe copper gaskets are used when you machine the block & install O'rings then machine a receiver groove into the head. I've removed the passenger head and found no issues with the Felpro gasket so I'm thinking its worse like broke rings on #2. Will post a video shorty.
