Hello 👋 I'm Katie, wife to Simon and mum to teenagers Hannah and Rebecca. I am 38 and have a degenerative eye condition called Retinitis Pigmentosa. I am legally blind, but still have a little bit of sight left.
We bought a family house in 2023 and will be making a few videos to document what we do to our house.
I'll also be making other videos like reviews and shopping hauls etc to keep myself busy and because I enjoy doing it (I just find it very difficult and it often takes me a long time to edit, with my sight problems).
Hopefully, we can put a few videos out that you'll enjoy. Thanks for dropping by :)

GCSE exam care package for Hannah

I put together a little care package for Hannah to help motivate, encourage, and give her hope and good luck for her GCSE exams. It can feel really daunting, and like there's a lot of pressure on you to "get the grades." And I just want Hannah to know that there are ways to help yourself stat focused and calm and that your exams are not the be-all and end all. She will do well and no matter wha...

Hello to you all! Here's my weekly family grocery haul and even meal planner from Tesco. I didn't buy too much today, luckily, and it came in at about £88. The sun came out after I had filmed, so it's been a lovely day here and quite warm. Please do let me know what I can do to solve my garlic salt problem! It's been driving me bonkers for years! Thanks so much for watching again and I'll see y...

Hello! Hope you're having a great Friday! We had a builder around to remove the old boiler cupboard and sort the floor out where the old boiler had leaked. The builder also built a new stud wall and sorted us out with a couple of electrical sockets in the bedrooms and even put a wire in the attic for us to put a light up there later on. He also battened, plaster-boarded, and plastered the back ...

Hi everyone, Welcome, if you're new here and hello again, if you've watched my videos before. Apologies for the video quality. I had to turn the lights off and work with what I had. I find it difficult sometimes to remember all of the prices as I film, so I hope it's OK to pop them up on screen as I go. I hope you've enjoyed the video and come back on Friday for another! See you then x

Hello everyone! Welcome back, I hope you're all having a lovely week so far. This has very much muddled me this week, having my shopping come on a different day. I'll get used to it in a couple of weeks. I hope you enjoy my video and it gives you an idea for a meal or for some of the offers on at the moment. Have a lovely rest of the week and see you very soon x

Hi everyone ☺️ This video was a few weeks in the making. We've had such bad weather recently, making the job harder, but we're so happy it's finally done. No more leaks in the front bedroom, and it looks so much cleaner. Thank you so much for watching! I hope you all enjoy and I'll see you next time x

Hello everyone! I hope you're all doing well and have had a good day so far. It's very windy again, here where we live! I had a big shop to do this week, and the girls are going to be trying steak for the first time. Hannah probably won't like it, as like me, she's not a big meat fan. I hope you enjoy the video and come back again next Wednesday for the next shopping video. 😊x

I just came across your channel, the house looks like it is spacious and a lovely, big garden, it has alot of potential 😊. Can i just ask is it a ex- council house in London?. Also i dont want to sound like im asking too much questions but if you don't mind me asking what is the square foot of house and the garden?. The reason is i'm interested to know is because im buying a 2 bedroom house, smaller but similar layout to your home and the offer has been accepted, im a first time buyer buying on my own. Originally i wanted a Victorian house but ex local authority houses are solid build and have big gardens. I'm enjoying looking at your videos as i will have to do alot of work on my house once everything gets accepted.
Hi, thank you so much for watching and for your comment! We moved last May. It is an ex council house, but not in London. We're in the South-west West of England. The previous owners must have bought it a long time ago from the council, I think. I've just looked at a listing down the road from us, and it says it's 76 square metres. Hopefully, that's accurate?! Congratulations on your purchase! It's a really good feeling to own your own house. We've got so much to do, but it's hard still saving money to get it all done. Good luck with it all, and keep me posted on how it's going. I started this channel, partly so we've got memories to look back on in years to come and see the difference. It's all good fun 😁 x
@@mercerfamily4444 Your very welcome, I subscribed to your channel so I can see future videos and get some tips😊. That is a very good size house. Thank you, it's been one year I've been going on viewings and finally decided to accept, congratulations to you as well. I think I will feel a big relief once I get the keys to my house, I'm just praying that everything runs smoothly as I've still got alot of steps to take. Although I know it is hard work and I need alot of money to save up, I'm actually very excited with decorating and actually doing work on the house, it gives me something to look forward to and focus on. Also the gardening I'm going to love because at the moment I live in a private flat and it's a shared garden so having my own private garden is going to be like a peaceful oasis to me that I can come home to after work. The day that I move into my own home, I will definitely take photos and videos, the first time for anything in life feels like a precious, proud moment. Its definitely nice to do videos and then look back at them with your family for the memories. Will give updates on my journey and hope my experiences can help others, as I've learnt alot😊.
@moila04 It can be a long process, can't it? I take it you're buying in London? I hope it all goes smoothly for you. This was my first time going through the process, too, but luckily, the solicitors pretty much guide you and tell you what to do and when (thank goodness!). You are going to absolutely love having a garden of your own. I want to grow some fruit and veg when we get the chance to sort the garden out. X
@moila04 It'll be great to hear about how things are going with you and what you've got planned. We're trying to fit us all 4 of us in a 2 bed house, so have got some plans that some people might think are odd, but hopefully, it'll work for us while our girls are living at home.
Hi! This is so kind! My SATs started this week and my mum got me something kind of like these
That's really nice of her! I hope your SATS go really well. Good luck 🍀
Good luck to Hannah. ❤ A lovely idea. Xx

Add a fee grains of rice into your salt to stop the moisture clumping it up. It works with regular salt ❤❤❤
Thanks! I've done that with normal salt before, so I will give it a try 👍 ☺️

I absolutely love your down to earth meal plan. I’ve started copying it !
Ah, that's great to hear 😊 Thanks! I try to be realistic and always honest about what I buy and what we eat. I'm no chef, either, but like to have a go at something new now and again. Anything you've tried and liked that you haven't had before? X

I pick online orders at a supermarket, sometimes the barcode doesn't quite match the one that you ordered even though its the same product. This is why the item will be substituted for itself, its just a way around the problem.
Ah, thanks for that. It seemed really strange as it's the same thing 😂 I'll know for the future, now.
@mercerfamily4444 no problem, I know it must seem strange. Unfortunately the technology doesn't always work 🤣

Ginger beer is nice but i dont blame anyone who doesn't like it, its hot. Haha jellybellyverycherry. I really like dandelion and burdock, strange to use two wild plants for a taste. Yes I did appreciate your joke Hannah.😐 sound of wind. Come on Rebecca stop hiding.Good editing Katie. Next you'll have to do alcohol. Great video. Thanks.
Those tastes are probably something your generation grew up with, so it would seem normal to you (I'm guessing?). They're very much an acquired taste! I don't think we'll do alcohol 😂 I wouldn't be able to cope with that, let alone the girls 😂
That was fun. X
I'm from Seattle USA when you write tea?? What meal is that?
Hi 👋 We do an easy, sometimes cold tea once a week. Can be anything from sandwiches, crumpets, sausage rolls, or soup, to party food bits like cocktail sausages, cheese and pineapple chunks, crisps with dip (small finger foods) or something like nachos. We're often in a rush Thursday evenings, so it's just something I can make quickly 😃
3ft or so. It really depends on how cold it is when it rains. We grow a lot of corn and soybean and moisture year round necessary.
That must be lovely. (Well, it would be for me, as we're not used to getting snow in the south-west of England anymore.)
@@mercerfamily4444 not really. Makes driving difficult.
@kristinesharp6286 I can imagine! I suppose you'd get fed up with it quickly if you had it regularly.
@@mercerfamily4444 a heavy snow is considered heart attack snow since people have them trying to shovel. Heavy I mean wet. Sometimes the snow is very light and dry. Because it gets so cold the snow can turn into ice and some temps the snow melt does not work. If it well known in advance couple inches to fall over the day with the salt trucks out and near freezing weather it’s fine. The trees look beautiful with the snow on bare limbs. If we get 14 inches in a day it’s a mess. School may be cancelled. Some have to work in it anyway. This past January were meant to have a wake/funeral but it was postponed last minute. Many already en route to the event as people were mostly traveling over an hour, in good weather. People should not have started the drive. We were not meant to join the deceased. Some roads closed meaning people stuck. Fortunately not northeast coast on other side of Great Lakes. They really get the snow. They get feet several weeks in succession. We can have a snow storm on Halloween last of October. Or a snowfall in April. There can be an odd one after that. We can also have a day of 70F in February. Because we are in the middle of hot and cold air systems we get a lot of wind. Cause it can be 20 in the morning and 50 later in the day sometimes the result is wind. Windy City was nicknamed cause of politicians at city hall full of hot air. But we really are windy in weather. Fair few tornadoes and hail storms. Very hot in summer.
@kristinesharp6286 That's really interesting information. Thanks for sharing that 😀 I can't even imagine that much snow! It seems crazy to me to think of. I live on the southwest coast of England, so we can get a lot of bad weather and wind. It always seems to be raining and stormy here. We get down to minus 6 Celsius, but not generally any lower than that anymore. And up to about 30 Celsius when we have a heat wave. It's becoming more and more often this temp in the summer now, though, which I really can't cope with. South East England seems to get the better drier weather, but I do love the west. Ah, I didn't know that was why it's actually called the windy city! So interesting! I love Calamity Jane and always thought it was just super windy.
What’s bubble and squeek ?
It's just mashed potatoes and a bit of whatever veg leftovers you have, like broccoli, cabbage, carrots, etc, and mash it all together, form into patties and fry. Maybe you know it by a different name? It's delicious 😋
@@mercerfamily4444 In Ireland we would probably call it potato cakes. I’m definitely going to try it this week !
@marianraftery Ah, good, let me know if you like them. I always do it on the day after our roast dinner so I can make extra mash, etc. I've heard of potato cakes, but here they are doughy-bread type things.
we also had 4 ceilings and some walls plastered it makes so much difference to the look of the rooms we are nearly there we are having the carpets fitted this friday and we can start moving back in whoppee ! hope yours all goes well x
Ah, wow! Yours is really coming along quickly! It'll be so nice for you to get back in to freshly decorated rooms. What colours are you going for? Thank you x
we have mist in our room which is white with hint of colour and willow tree which is pale green both by Dulux x
@traceyjane4288 That sounds lovely and calming. I can't decide on a colour for the living room. I thought I knew what I wanted, but I have since changed my idea for kitchen colours, and they'd be very similar.
we have just had two new radiators in our bedroom and i love it as well it will make all the difference :) x
It's amazing, isn't it? None of us will be shivering next winter, now 😃 It looks more homely to me as well, now. Hope all your work is going well in your new house x
Excellent. ❤ X
Thanks ☺️ x
I wonder why the newspaper?
I grew up in the 50s and 60s in Ireland, and newspaper was always used as underlay back then !
I wondered as well. Thanks, Marian, for that information. My dad has just told me the same as you have said.
It didn't even cross my mind that there was no such thing as underlay. I suppose I just grew up with it existing, so I never questioned it. I love getting to learn these little things along the way 😁
@@mercerfamily4444 in U.S. there is padding under carpet. Then plywood under that.
Yeah, there is in the UK too, mostly. It has been used here since at least the 80s when I was born, but I'm not sure about before. Lots of people here still don't use it, though, especially landlords. Our old house that we rented didn't have any to save the landlord money.
That’s a big job done ! You won’t know yourselves come Winter with the comfort !
I (almost) can't wait for winter again now, haha. It'll be lovely and cosy. Although I don't like having it too hot anyway.

I find mangoes very messy to prepare and eat. To prepare, i cut it in half or close to the large seed. Then i dice it, and slice the dice bits out. I hope this makes sense. Love your you tube contents

It is pretty exhausting! And poor Summer (our Collie) doesn't understand what's going on. She's been very good, though. It'll be nice when we've got a few jobs done.
I think you might have been charged for two broccoli, and only received one.
I think you might be right. I'll have to check and contact them. Their website has been playing up a bit.
Interested to hear was ‘tea’ is on the menu? Haven’t seen those choc orange cookies in Tesco - they look good!
Sorry, I should really remember to say it in every video, but Thursday evenings are always busy for us, so I just generalise with 'tea', which usually means things like crumpets, something on toast, soup, soft boiled eggs and 'soldiers'. It's just something fairly quick. Those chocolate orange cookies smelled very tasty! My daughter said that they are really nice. Unfortunately, I can't have one as I can't have gluten, but she would recommend them 😊
Brilliant. I couldn't build a tiny table. Had screws in the wrong bit 😂. Im really good it dismantling things 🤣🤣 take care xx
Thank you 😊 They can be really hard! Depends on the quality of the instructions, in my opinion. It's easy to get something in the wrong place 😂 Yeah, it's much more fun to dismantle or demolish something 😃 X
That does seem expensive for what it is, but congratulations on getting it built. 😅 Don't know what prices are like now, but the last time I needed a small wardrobe, I went to a local charity shop and got one that was like new for about £30. You can get some good bargains.
Thanks 😅 This wardrobe is now £107 ish, but it is a bit smaller, depth and height wise, than their current clothes wardrobes. I think the only reason for this purchase instead of buying from a second hand or charity shop was simply the ease and speed in which I could get hold of it. I'm sure some charity shops offer delivery and we have used them in the past, but I can't easily get out on my own. Definitely would consider this option more in the future. I'm trying to make a conscious effort to stop so much waste and so on now and to try and help the environment where I can 😊
The girls bedroom is so neat and tidy. I’m very impressed !
It doesn't look like that all of the time 😂, but on the whole, they are very good. Hannah, in particular, likes to organise her things (not so much her clothes).
Well done, to Hannah too. It's good to learn how to put things together. Xx

They really did! They were pretty strong 😃
What toppings do you put on your baked potatoes ?
Usually, we only have butter, baked beans, and grated cheese. That's just my absolute favourite. Do you have any suggestions of things to try?
@@mercerfamily4444 Tuna , sweetcorn or coleslaw.
I might actually mix sweetcorn and beans on it. That sounds yummy. I do like coleslaw on the side, but don't often remember to have it. I'm not a fan of tuna, but Rebecca used to be so, that's an idea for her. 👍
Put a note buy your veg to tell the pickers not to use bags. X
I think I will, but might also email, as then they might stop wasting so much with every household, not only mine. 😃
Just found your channel and I've enjoyed watching this video with more to catch up with. We moved 18 month ago, so I can empathise with all the upheaval but you'll get things the way you want them soon and hopefully you'll be able to relax a bit. 🙂
Hi, and thank you for watching. I thought it would be fun to look back on in a few years and see what's changed and remember how it used to be. It certainly is a very stressful time, isn't it? Hopefully, this year, we'll manage to get a few things done to make it more our home. Hope you are enjoying your house 🏠 😊

It was so tall! I could hardly reach the top of it. 😊
Your old landlord did you a favour! You'll never get that rent money back, you can have a water meter installed if there isn't one already, and every penny you spend will be for the benefit of the Mercer family! ❤ XXX
Thank you 😊 Yes, exactly. It is a good, positive way to look at a difficult situation. It's such a good feeling to be able to call it ours.
