Blacksmithing : TEXTURES OF STEEL
How do you forge textures into the surface of a steel plate ? This video explores the two principle ways that I create some of my tableware pieces - hand forging and the use of a hydraulic press. Starting in 1996 at art college , where I began to explore the plasticity of hot steel and ending with some of my most recent pieces forged for Michelin star restaurants. This is a very personal film and maps the progression of an idea and the course of my craft over 30 years.
I hope you enjoy watching the processes and feel free to ask me any questions.

what size steel are u using?
Really high Quality cookware. Im planning to buy several frying pans. I was wondering: In the video you said the steel sheet is 3 mm thick. When looking at the sides, the sides are smaller than 3 mm. Is the cooking surface 3 mm and the sides thinner? What are the different thickness dimensions of the finished pan? Thanks in advance. 👍👍
Give your head a wobble
I've seen a few different ways making nails and how you put it in the vice and hit the top and its done it a quick and efficient way thanks heaps appreciated the video
Parabéns pela forjaria é tudo para mim a arte milenar. ...
Great stuff. 👍👍
Thanks 👍
You got into recommended to a soon gonna be engineer so the algorithm has got your back
glad to hear it
This type of precise patterning is exactly why I bought a flypress Very cool and really attractive work Thanksyou for sharing
Very nicely edited, great topic that moves you... thanks for sharing... the peace, quiet and your thoughts are very well conveyed. ... I have a feeling ... ❤️🔥🔨
Thank you and I'm glad you enjoyed. A very personal subject for me .
Lovely. ❤
Love nail making videos. Shows people that blacksmithing is not always just knife/sword making
AWESOME 👍
thanks
Texture is life.
I agree ...
About time.
I just watched Alex steele's video where he made 500 nails in just over 12 hours now he did several thing differently to you his nail were smaller about an inch and he used a tool to hold the nail while shaping the head. He showed a film of an old blacksmith making nails they used under 30 or 40 strikes to shape it, the used a tool where after shaping the nail they dropped it into this tool and formed the head and they did it in one heat
That's correct and certainly the most traditional way to forge nails . I haven't watched the film but he probably used a 'nail header' . I have been forging nails in a less traditional way using a leg vice as it was always much easier to teach beginners that way. On average I can make 25-30 an hour of the 3" nails. Thanks for watching and new film coming soon
Neat video and process. Music on the video was a bit loud compared to the vocals.
Thank you for the feed back ... I'll take a look and work on it . Cheers
Fantastic work Alex & Team. Inspiring ❤️🔥
thanks man ... next film coming up soon. I Think you will like it
what a gorgeous work!!!
Que bruto son los hijos de vulcano.
What is the whait pen? I'm ruky blacksmith😅
Thanks for a great video depicting some great craftsmanship and care given to an otherwise overlooked tool.
👍✌️⚒️
👍✌️⚒️
What sort of variation do you get piece to piece?
we try to get as little as possible but of course each piece is slightly different . All part of the beauty I think
@@alexpoleblacksmith yeah, that slight variation is a nice aspect of hand made things. Also when the same person tries the same idea repeatedly and you see the evolution in their execution of the idea
So what is a two tine fork then, a bident?
Yeah.
Beautiful pans. The handle shape is so important to the daily enjoyment of using a pan. But so often done poorly.
Amazing work as always 👍👍
"Three tines is not a fork. Three tines is a trident. Forks are for eating, tridents are for ruling the seven seas." (Sheldon Cooper)
So very glad to see you back, sir!! I love the work you put into your videos. Your craftsmanship is exquisite! I would love to see and learn from you working in person. One can dream.
Thanks for watching … 👍
J'aime vraiment votre travail et le fait que vous préserviez les techniques traditionnelles tout comme moi. ❤
Looks great! I've never had much luck with stainless/keeping it from rusting.
Have you tried Passivation in phosphoric or critic acid? Really necessary for this craft shown here.
@@stevefarley7014 I bought a citric acid spray to test. Same issue. I must be doing something wrong.
hi. We don't seem to get any issues as long as the forged piece is cleaned properly and isn't left in contact with mild/carbon steel. Very piece is put through the vibe and then dried and oiled. Works for us ok - I'm using 304 . Happy to give any tips if you want as it's a great material to use
Thank you for sharing! Love your guys' work!
Very nice, job well done. They probably make the food taste great.
Thank you
Amazing! Glad to see more films coming out on the UA-cam.

Как получить такую книгу?
Beautiful video and awesome message. Thanks for sharing it with the world.
Thank you for watching and your kind words
Beautiful video! It gives this wonderful feeling of mindfulness and awe with the world around us. Like a deep breath of fresh, cool air at dawn.
What a wonderful mouth watering and thought provoking video - I would have loved to have been one of the participants enjoying that magnificent feast. I really enjoyed the dialogue and I feel that as modern day blacksmiths we all help to maintain a craft that could have easily disappeared into the ether. Thank you
it certainly was a great feast. Thanks for watching
Пердець, це те що бажає душа кожного чоловіка! Десь трішечки брутально аутентично грубо звичайно знайоме та цікаве! Гарно подане!
So so so cool. I want one. I want to make one.
do it ...
Here because of Adam Smith, really a humble and creative art. Well done Alex, quite the blacksmith.
Like the Vice technique, first I've seen. Just made first nails today, my tool design needs work but first attempt with tools i had already. Making small square hole is difficult
