Dang! I bought another GS! Couldn't wait..
I ordered a brand new 2024 new motorcycle from Cycle Spots on the 31 May. They said 3 weeks.. it's now 7 August! I couldn't wait, so in the interim I pulled the trigger on another old goodie.. a 2004 BMW R1200GS .. a new Gus!

    If anyone is considering buying this... Don't bother (A3526). I ended up returning it, after just a few hours of usage. It's so slow and unresponsive. The text is so small when using Android auto, which makes it very hard to read. The touch functionality is also 50/50. Sometimes it registers, sometimes it does not. Save your money and buy a quality product like Carpuride or Chigee AIO Play.

    Money argument is a little bit off in my opinion. Is it a lot of money you need to spend at once ? Maybe. It depends on how much money you make. Is it expensive ? Don't think so, considering that this tech can save your life or mitigate major injury. If you are going to have an accident and won't be able to work for couple of months (at best) than that's very expensive. Much more than 1000 bucks. In my opinion. This year a also bought airbag system. I choose in&motion and vest from french company Furygan. Evolution+ is thier latest airbag that allows you to wear it under or on top of your jacket. I combined this with Pandomoto AA shell.

    All of these airbag systems have their pros and cons. After looking around, I went with the Klim A1 Rally vest because it’s stretchy, least bulky and most breathable, In&Motion is a proven algorithm, and I can replace the gas cannister. I wear it 100% of the time when I ride.

    I have the same Tech Air 5 and never ride without it. It is now three years old and has never deployed. I want to keep it that way. In summer it can add to the heat as the airbag does not flow air to the skin, but I get by wearing it under a Revit Sand 4 adventure jacket, which flows a lot of air if all the linings are removed and vents opened. In summer I am wearing only a T shirt under the airbag and jacket and its fine as long as I am moving. The one downside not mentioned is that the long back protector gets in the way of zipping the Sand 4 pants to the jacket, but I figure that it I come off, the inflated air bag inside the jacket will keep it in place on my body with no chance of riding up while sliding down the road. Cheers, Alan.

    It's good that you are looking for additional crash protection and having purchased it, it will be justified if/when you happen to come off. I went through the same decision making process, though it wasn't an impulse buy. The reason I went with a Helite Turtle 2 jacked as that when it was set-off, I could replace the cartridge myself and be back on the bike in a few minutes, avoiding having to send the jacket back for inspection, as it works off a lanyard and not an electronic inertia sensor. The other point was that it is worn external to my textile jacket and not inside leathers which might be damaged by the inflation or compress you further with the leathers restraining it's expansion. The Moto GP rider's leathers are designed to allow an internal airbag function, I'm not so sure about their off the seld leathers. One word of caution with the Helite lanyard activated vests, make sure there is sufficient slack that it doesn't go off simply because you start to dismount forgetting to disconnect the lanyard. The vest going off scares the crap out of you, as well as taking your breath away momentarily.

    • @smackbikeNZ
      @smackbikeNZ Місяць тому

      Yes I did pause between the Tech Air and Helite, eventually went with Tech Air for the reasons stated. But regardless, any airbag adds that safety factor and glad you have one!

    Buy the Helite airbag vest you are better protected because of bigger air cartouche, no expensive checkups needed, no worries about the electronics and cheeper. There is not one reason for me why should go with Alpinestars. Here in Europe they did some testing with different vests and came to the same conclusion. My vest had been activated once and the impact on the ground was so smooth that I didn’t feel it with my back, airbag vests are a important step forward for riders.

    The lunchbox is not so bad. Do never use petrolium, like white spirit of any sort. The ventholes on the backside are stupid. Plugg them total. A small hole in the bottom with a house for compressed air into the glovesbox or something dry. Change the rubberseal between the parts if it bad Change the lightbulbs if it is opened. Look out for the wireing of the bike. Germans cant wire electrics. Change to better quality cabels. Change cabels for ignitionlock to a quality can resist bending better. Take away the plastic surounding cables and replace with a plastic spiral . Water ! If ABS. Change capacitors in the controlbox. Take photos and make drawings. Not difficult but takes time. A helpful trick in damp climates. A deciliter 2stroke oil in the tank can help injectors in ther spring. Drive about 100 km . In the forks good hydraulic oli ISO VG 32 (the most common) . To oilfilter . If it rotates in the tool, try 5cm cardboard between it and the filter. Both the oilfilter and the fuelfilter are the same as same some cars.

    Being from the US I found it odd that you didn't wave to the other bikers you passed on the road. We lower our left hand. Is that just a thing here? I would say it would be hard to do so being on the left side of the road. If you don't know what I mean by wave do a search for biker wave on UA-cam.

      Given we ride on the left, you can'r easily raise your right throttle hand, so some people raise a left hand. Whats more common is to tip your head/helmet and nod at the rider. With the stabilisation you probably wouldn't notice. Do it every time I pass fellow rider. Without fail. I get a 50% hit rate on a friendly reply.

    what are the rules in NZ about shortening the rear of the frame? i am looking to do a café or bobber build but don't want to hit low volume cert issues. i figure if you change you front forks and that changes you calipers you will need cert for the brake modification, but just wasn't sure about after market rear subframes, or shortening frames and adding rear loops for under the seat.

      I got lucky, and my guy didnt worry about the small change I made to the frame. So I didnt need to recert.

    Wow, yet ANOTHER video showing that you can navigate with it. Is that all people use it for?!! AA is also for hands free calling and hands free texting. Would you PLEASE do a video showing if this works without having to touch anything, just like you would on a car stereo? Thanks.

      Yeah, good idea. It does work with voice recognition... but I have zero patience for having to repeat myself, so generally i turn it off, and just try not to touch the screen very :-)
