      yes that's correct , one has transistor and one is valve I think the letter on the end changed but they are basically the same

    Repaired one of these for a scaffolder - it's a new controller jobby - New bare unit is £180 with a 3 year warranty though - only because I got a spares and repair off ebay and the controller was good.

      no because the tempriture probe in the iron was open circut and you cannot get them thhe chap that owns it just wanted a usable iron , the board will be ok , its in my box of parts , i have a lot of thease irons with faulty tempriture probes so this can show you how you can re purpose a othherwise junk iron ,

      @@selfmadeRepair it may be the triac on the pcb that's failed , gone short circuit , I have had this happen in the past

      if it gets hot the heater is good , you need to check the probe the resistance will change as it gets hot you can heat it with your hands

    Love seeing these stations being kept alive! I inherited mine, it was built in 1979. So its a good 20years older then me ^^ I need to get new tips though, and since I do mostly SMD soldering. Am considering the PT-LT adapter. Do you have any experience with that?

      @@dark1stu got the PT8-LT adapter a week ago. Together with the "LT-1X" tip, which is a 30° bend. And I am LOVING it! Soldering 0605 bicolor SMD leds was a blast :D. And the temperature seemed high for me at first. But it worked great with lead free solder!

    The not-so-secret secret of these projectors is their imager: it's an LCD that was originally meant for mobile phone use, and repurposed for projector. These projectors are cheap because every essential part in it is off-shelf: repurposed LCD, white LED light source, plastic lens. That person who originally thought of repurposing mobile phone LCDs to use in cheap projectors is very creative. Who knew?

    Just got one of these in 2024 to play some 40+ year old tapes of family talking. I couldn't find any drivers on the Ion website and the usb input to my Windows 11 laptop sounded awful, you couldn't make out what anyone was saying. I swapped to the line-out and took it into a Haupage usb tv interface and the recordings came alive!

      it will be a fault with the output transistor on the board inside the power supply or the temperature probe in the iron i will post a video in the next few days, showing the correct readings from a working Iron for you to compare

      ​@@ukefan9it's got 2 x 1/8" inputs in front and rca ins/outs in back. You don't want to plug a guitar straight into it, you'll want to use a mixer with rca tape outs with a mic'd amplifier, or if you're using a modeler make sure you have a cabinet impulse response or else you just have a can of bees tone from the preamp. Hope this helps.

    I have one of these units, and they are great! Interesting video and fault finding/repair. Are you gonna repair the globe on channel 2? I have one out on mine, I have some replacement globes, but have not been adventurous enough to try and tackle it yet. Nobody on UA-cam shows replacing them and I'm looking for 'inspiration'. :) Thanks for the video!

      Purely and simply I was in there, replacing capacitors trying to get rid of a hum and for the couple of seconds, it took to change them it made sense , had I not been doing other work on the amplifier? I probably wouldn't of changed them

      not necessarily, depends if hums at all setting of volume control or not

      The hum continues when you turn the power off , it does increase and decrease with the volume setting

      @@dark1stu hmm, would need to see the circuit to see what could cause it...i've had a look in my rtvs books and a search on the internet and so far cant find it .. just out of interest check grounding continuity to the metal casings of the control pots, especially the volume one , i had issues with that type pot in a Gould oscilloscope i had to solder grounding connections directly to the outer 'cans', they only get a connection normally via the lugs holding the cans to the mounting bushes, and that relies on spring pressure, and its dissimilar metal so can develop poor contact.....

      @@andygozzo72 it's odd and the cartridge being faulty is the most likely contender. It's possible something on my bench was causing it , if it was magnetic cartridge, I would be looking at if the screen cable was disconnected, but it's not , I think it's gonna end up on eBay for parts , I've got that many projects, I've got to get through to try and make some space for new toys

      For a start, it's not a drill it's on low power screwdriver design for working on small electronic equipment after working in the electronics industry for over 30+ years, I would agree that I don't have a clue what I'm doing , perhaps you can do with better job , I look forward to watching your video on how to repair one of these.     I Also noticed the incoming live Cable was connected to the ring on the fuse holder not the base meaning you could get electrocuted as you unscrewing the fuse the green wire should be the incoming so when you remove the fuse there is not an exposed live conductor

    Great effort. Using flux will help you flow the solder. Watch Joey Does Tech to see the technique. But bravo for your new SMD skills

      Yes it will but what I was aiming with this video was to do this without using the specialist tools that were sitting to the right of me . Normally I would use flux, solder paste and a hot air station, but my aim with this video was to build it with tools that the average amateur might have to hand , I believe it's important for new people to get into this trade of electronics at the amateur level and do you understand it's not a scary or difficult as it may come across when you see somebody using all the fancy tools .
