Adapting the Canon Ef 100-400mm F/4.5-5.6 to the Canon R6
Thank Youuuuuu
Hope it can be of any help. I was new myself when I made this video but once you get the basics, it's so fun to edit. Thanks for watching!
Amazing pics… which reciprocity value chart you use?
None. I usually use the in-camera metering and occasionally the exposure composition dial if I feel like it's going to read incorrectly due to it being dark out. Thanks for watching!
I've had one for 6 years and used it on hundreds of jobs. Its very sharp wide open and focuses extremely quickly adapted on R6 ii or R3. The RF 100-500 is sharper no doubt, but the max aperture of f/7.1 is just too slow. I'd rather have a slightly bigger and heavier 100-500 f/5.6.
Yeah, it really is a solid lens and the focal range is great for so many things!
Just to let you know, that is an excellent lens, and I am a Canon shooter using the R3 and the R1, but right now, I don't have the $9,500 it takes to buy that. But a great alternative is the Sigma 120-300 mm F/2.8, which I do have and I use it all the time. I use it in conjunction with my Canon R1 and R3.
I hear ya on the sigma. I used to have the 120-300 f2.8 years ago when I was a Nikon shooter getting into sports and I loved it! Which version of the 120-300 f2.8 do you use? Is it fully supported when adapted to the canon? Do you get the full FPS is burst mode? That is my biggest issue right now is some lenses are not supported when adapting so I have been holding back on any Non Canon Lenses.
@DLivingston It's 100% compatible with the Canon R1 and Canon R3. I have the latest version. To answer your question, I get the full 30 frames per second burst in full auto. You can still pick one up used or brand new. But I think for people who now have them, they're probably not going to give them up just because if you're a cannon shooter, that 100-300 is very expensive. But at some point, I will get one. My version is the sports version. All of my sports lenses are made by Canon, and Sigma is the only non Canon lens that I own. I never purchased third-party lenses. But the Sigma was worth the money.
Great to hear that. I’ll def be renting one sometime soon and give it a shot for sure! I do miss having that zoom range and I find myself shelving the 300mm more and more as time goes on.
@DLivingston I got it because sometimes my EF 400 f/2.8L cuts off everything when it gets to close.
Hey Derek nicr video. I have a question, ijust bought my first Kodak vision 3 500T and i dont know what iso set up should i use. Some say 50 to 150 others 500 to 800. What do you recommend? (My camera is a minolta x-700) Thanks in advance!
If it’s not expired, I always shot it at 500 with no issues.
@DLivingston it's my first time. I have a 500 and an 800 one. Sorry forgot to mention that both of them are expired since 2005. Any recommendation on the iso for both?
@@pamouzz428 It's really going to depend on how expired and how it's been stored. Assuming it's not super old/expired I would suggest shooting the 500 at 400 and the 800 at 640. I usually just go one stop when I shoot expired film that isn't too old.
You could be good to shoot at box speed as well if it's newly expired film.
What a best of a lens, definitely need to give a try at some point. Hope all is well!
It really is and all good here! Hope all is well with you Nuno! Picked up a Pentax 645 again so hopefully some more film content coming soon if I can find the time!
I love using the f/1.8 lens in the gym as well. My primary volleyball lens is the 85mm f/1.8, which works well when I am situated close to the court and the extra light (vs my 70-200 f/2.8) makes a huge difference allowing for 1/1000 shutter speeds and acceptable ISO. I am looking at the 135mm f/1.8 for situations where I need more range (and more light than my f/2.8) but I probably need to be about 30 feet back to get full body in frame which is somewhat limiting in some of the gyms I shoot in. Great video, thanks
Thanks for watching and glad or hope this helped a bit!
Anything you’re looking to add to your gear in 2025? Or any gaps you have found with your current set up?
I don't really feel any gaps as of now. The few things that do stick out to me is the 300mm being the older non Image Stabilized version, it doesn't get the fill FPS in mechanical shutter. Which really isn't an issue until Baseball Season. So, upgrading to a supported 300mm would be nice but I got this one so cheap and I am trying to pay other things off in 2025 so no big lens purchases this year. Other than that, Canon keeps releasing new camera so often, I sometimes wonder if I should sell one of the R6 bodies and upgrade to the R3 or r6 mkii to just stay ahead of the curve. I try not to think about it too much because I make it work and I don't feel like my R6s dont get the job done so..
@@DLivingstonI was told by someone with 2 R3s and an R5 that the R6 gets the job done just as well. Love my R6 mkII, would like to upgrade my R8 to another at some point
First of all happy new year for you! Nice to see what’s in your bag for 2025!
Happy new year to you as well. Thanks for watching!
Been waiting for this
thanks for swinging through and watching
Can you make a ton of money doing freelance
It depends on what a ton is, but if you're in the right location, willing to freelance, and be busy, I am sure it can make a livable wage. Being in a smaller town, I have to work a full-time job alongside this.
Great images and video
Thanks for this. I’m struggling with my per game rate.
Thanks for watching. Just go with what you think your value is. It’s going to vary per client sometimes as well.
Not with the uv filter on
Yeah, I don’t remove filters if they come on the rental.
I love my copy, the AF is quite fast, not silent and instant like the new 24-105 f/2.8, but fast enough. The 85mm f/1.2 DS is a little bit more of a noisy AF and a bit slower but images are amazing from it. A lot of my colleagues just use the 24-105 f/4 for everything and are very happy. So don't feel any pressure to run out and pick this thing up. It does replace a 35mm, 50mm and 85mm for a number of my colleagues too. In fact for weddings they use this lens and the 135mm for 95%, and then the 15-35mm for the 5%. And rare occasion pull the 85mm f/1.2 in the lowest of light situations.
I have the 24-105 f4 at work and I’m not a fan at all. But it’s being a f4 isn’t the greatest in low light but yeah. No pressure on me to get this lens really. Was very fun to use though. Thanks for watching and giving me your thoughts!
@@DLivingston Yeah the 24-105 f/4 is not a lens that is like "wow" by any means, but they use it for pretty much everything, including corporate events, school portraits, high end corporate headshots, family portraits, studio portraits, senior portraits, sports, general parties and events and it just holds up even in low light the R5 does okay at ISO 8000 and up with that lens and on camera flash. Are the more expensive ones better, heck yeah, but the 24-105 f/4 is light in comparison and does just about everything well enough that it really is a practical lens for general photography...and yes, most could literally run their entire photography business with just that lens. The other one they use extensively is the 70-200 f/2.8. Sorry not trying to be contrary as I have invested in the expensive lenses, but have clearly seen that those f/4's do just fine in most of the work we do. I just recently sold my 24-105 f/4 and got the 24-105 f/2.8, because I also shoot a lot of video and wanted the hybrid capability, and don't really feel comfortable hanging the 28-70 f/2 in front while on a tripod (turns out canon rep said most the damage to that lens was folks trying to balance that sucker on a tripod), you need heavy duty gear to hold it up (like real video tripods).
I understand where you are coming from. I use the 24-104 for all my corporate and government work. Not saying it’s a bad lens. I just prefer the 2.8
Derek, thanks for sharing. How do you set up focus for basketball on your R6?
Question answered. 😳 😀
Awesome, thanks for watchin as usual.
The weight normally never bothers me for the 28-70…except for basketball. Raising the camera + lens vertically, you’ll be feeling that weight in no time. I reverted back to the 85 because of it.
I can def tell that going vertical would add up quick. I do love an 85 prime as well. I would probably go that rough vs selling or trading in for this over the 24-70. Thanks for watching!
Doesn’t the 85 weight about the same?
@@davidmpoliveira1 I think it’s the extra weight plus the length making it “heavier” (center of gravity I think) trying to go vertical quickly and you don’t have your sides help support. It’s definitely more difficult for me. I’m fine with the 28-70 in normal events, etc
@@danidah Oh okay, I understand. I own the 28-70, but not the 85, and I’ve never tried the RF 85 L specifically👍
My 85 f2 is much lighter. I’m sure the 85 L are heavy as well.
It is cool lens. How was your hit rate compared to a normal 24-70 f2.8 IS L?
Pretty much the same but the 24-70 is a great lens so it would be hard to miss a shot with either.
Those are fantastic. It’s a fantastic lens for bball
Thank you and it really is! Thanks for watching!
This lens was my Xmas present to myself. So far I have used it for volleyball and ice skating, and I am so used to shooting with primes indoor that I am struggling a little with using the zoom ring effectively. But it is a very nice (and heavy!) lens, and all the fears I had about its AF speed are gone.
Heck of a self gift, I love it! Luckily this zoom isn't much so shouldn't take long to get used to. I used to be all prime as well but over time found that the zooms come in handy in many situations.
I love renting this lens. I’ve been using for events I get hired for. I rented it again for an event tomorrow but I’m definitely going to take it to a high school basketball game tonight!! Thanks for this 📷
Such a solid lens! Happy shooting and thanks for watching!
Thank you for the insight and will def be looking to get the bench or seat that will save my knees! Very cool that you found this video and I appreciate all the feedback. If I ever make it that way, I will def reach out! Also, if you have a photography page on FB or Instagram, id love to follow. Thanks!
Do you get vignetting in the viewfinder with the use of that 20mm on your F4? I get it with the 28 and it drives me bananas. I can't get a definitive answer on whether or not that's a normal thing.
I never noticed it but on a recent film I did. So, I would say yes. I just didn't notice it until years after owning it!
@ the 50mm is crystal clear from edge to edge. Obviously you get the wide angle vignetting in the image especially wide open but it throws me off when it’s in my field of view. Other than that the F4 is perfect in every way.
Great idea!
Thanks!
Glad you liked it!
never thought to use this for sports great idea
Its usable in the right situations!
On my R7 I end up with yellow waves of light in my photos sometimes at indoor tracks due to the frequency of the artificial lighting. Have you any suggestions for dealing with this?
Anti flicker would be the best route but is going to really kill your frame rate on the burst.
@@DLivingston thank you yes I did notice my fps on burst suffered. Oddly enough I didn't have a problem at all with it yesterday-a modern facility- i believe that one indoor track I mentionined had actual old flourescent tube lighting. I appreciate your help!
@ great to hear!
Now if I can just get the focus tracking to stick to the right person......😂
man, it was exactly the video I was looking for. Thanks you !
Hey, glad it can be of some help or enjoyment. I come back to this one often because I miss shooting expired film but havn't at the time to buy any or get out and shoot it!
@DLivingston yeah I can understand that. I'm beginning film photography (and photography in general) and shooting on expired film for my first roll was kind of scary for me, but the results are not that bad, except the scans that I got from the lab were not as good as I expected, I will try to redo it myself once I will have the required tools to do DSLR scanning.
Thanks for this succinct overview. I need to reconsider this camera as not super happy with the Fujifilm GFX system
Well, I only got to spend like 4 days with this camera and def didn't get to test it as much as I had hoped. So take this video as just a sprinkle of what it may have to offer. Thanks for swinging through!
Am enjoying your work and saving up for an RF 100-300mm f/2.8L IS USM... every little bit helps so I hope I win!
I photograph high school sports -- football, volleyball, basketball, baseball (and hockey and rugby but those aren't KSHSAA recognized sports) -- and am deliberating between using some inheritance money to either get the RF 100-300 or upgrade from the EF to the RF 70 - 200 (Z model) and possibly upgrade my R6m1 and/or my R5m1 to an R3. What would you recommend? (I do have an RF 100-500 which is great for daylight field sports.)
I would choose to upgrade on the glass if it was me. You can make camera bodies go a long way and feel that getting the better glass is a better option! Happy shooting and thanks for watching!
Spikers, as you are naming, are the right and outside hitters, but any of the front-line players can spike or kill the ball, such as the middle-blockers or middle hitters. The libero and other defensive players position further back. Volleyball is one of the harder sports to photograph. I have had better shots now that I have two Canon R5 m2 45 MP cameras with faster sticky focus, pre-shoot capturing, and sports action priority. The Canon R1 has similar features but with a lower 24 MP sensor.
I agree, one of the tougher sports I cover. Tried hockey the other day and it made volleyball seem like a breeze! Pre Capture would be a game changer for sure. Someday Ill make the upgrade for sure probably to the r3 or r1. We shall see. Thanks for swinging by!
I started my photojournalism and sports photography journey in 1986 using Kodak Tri-X pushed two stops to 1600. Life got so much better when T-Max 3200 came along and we could push that two stops to 12,800. Luckily, I was shooting D1 college sports and the lighting was pretty decent for the time, as they often televised the events. I have to say, I don't miss those days. Manually focusing lenses, praying to get one or two good action shots in focus, burning through 10 rolls of 36 for a typical football game, spending hours in the darkroom, chemical stains on all my clothes - you can have it! If I want an old school look, I can easily create it in Lightroom.
Oh I get it, some of you had to walk up hill both ways before you got to the digital realm, haa! I on the other hand, came in on a Nikon D3s and never looked back, until I got burnt out. This is why I dabble in film, I need the speed bump to slow me down. Between the college and my full-time job, all I see digital bursts and lightroom editing.
3:20 I shoot high school basketball. I stand straight in line, center court with the players at the opening tip off and use the vertical focusing zone to capture the tip off. Works great.
Oh solid idea!!
And I thought just a manual lenses adapted to modern was tricky haha
Diggin the old skool grain in the images! Fun project, look forward to seeing more of the older film equipment 👊🏼
Yeah, it's a nice change from time to time and I just love to shoot film regardless. More to come for sure! Thanks for watching!
Those are really sweet looking. I've got a film camera that I've had loaded and shot random for about a year and haven't developed yet. Where do you have your film developed? Appreciate the content!
I get my film developed and scanned at The Darkroom Lab. I’ve been using them for years and they’re great
Thanks for swinging by. Last video of the year is here. Soon we will be back into sports and I will have more film videos coming as well. Kentmere 400: amzn.to/4iSMNFK
I just purchased the EF 50mm 1.8 for my T7. Like many others the EF 70-200 2.8 was just too much lens for basketball. Just received the lens today and finding that I get almost constant lens focus chatter when in AI Servo mode. I'lll will buying the R6 within the next few weeks with EF adapter. Do you have any issues with AI Servo chatter on the R6? I assume not.
I don't have that issue but there is a setting that might help. Under the AF menu there is a option called "Continuous AF" Make sure that is Disabled. This will stop the lens from focusing when you're not holding the af button or shutter half way down.
@@DLivingston Thanks for the reply, I think I'll return this EF 50mm and just get the RF 50mm when I order my R7. About another $75 but might help me some with the issue. I'll check that setting when getting the R7, thanks. And just to be clear, I only get the chatter with the shutter button pressed halfway down in focus mode.
Oh thats my bad, it could easily be a EF lens issue and I would suggest getting the RF 50mm. Not to pricey and is a very good lens! I would say it's just an age thing and the AF in some of the EF lenses are not too quite at time.
@@DLivingston Thanks, if you don't mind telling me, what AF area mode do you use when shooting basketball or any sports I guess for that matter. My T7 is limited on options but I usually use single point mode but sometimes end up with a blurry shot from not tracking my subject very well.
@@markmershon1348 I use One Spot, Expand AF and Facial. I bounce around depending on the sport and how well the AF is working. I also use SPOT AF when I need to precise.
Great video!
Appreciate it!
I love love love the 85mm for shooting volleyball or basketball under the basket. It’s perfect for both in my opinion and I love the fact that you are bringing it to light. Thank you
I agree! It's so versatile!
On my second body I love to have a wide angle prime. Comes in clutch when the action is right in front of you on the glass.
I thought the same after thinking back. I’ll probably take the 16mm on the second body. Super small and light setup could be good for the close stuff.
Man I fkn love your videos
I appreciate it 🤘 thank you
Awesome photos Derek!! Especially for your first time covering the sport! It can be tough at first because hockey is so fast, you can't get everything if you just follow the puck. I find trying to anticipate where the action is going can help you get some great images. It can be a bit tricky if you don't know the sport too well, but the more you watch it and shoot the easier it becomes. Stuff like a guy is open on the opposite side, he might be setting up for a one timer so it might be better to track him as opposed to the guy with the puck. Best of luck at future games! Really interested to see how you progress!!
Yeah, I def did start playing the anticipated route by watching the open passes and a couple of times, I just followed a guy as he moved around and just waiting for something to happen and that helped a ton! Thanks for watching!
Good stuff! I have shot a lot of hockey, if you used the 70-200 rf v1 did the extended feature bother you against the glass? Been team photog for several ncaa D1 schools over the last decade, that comes with unlimited rink access all 3 periods so location is easier than what you faced. Your comments were good, I use 70-200 rf v2 ( no extend, prior the ef iii with adapter) all game, & have 24-70 and 10-20 (now) with me & USA as needed
I would say, It def would be easier without the extending of the lens with the rf v1 70-200. It's the only time since getting this lens where the extending barrel was a pain. I also didn't have the lens hood on and I bet it would be much better with it on. It would let me know where I had the lens. I found a work around by keeping my hand on the front of the lens to keep an idea of where it was.
@ I’d recommend rubber sleave for lens hood, one that aligns to the threads will also give you some protection, court side nba requires them also. The rubber hoods typically collapse for several lengths if that makes sense…. Look forward to more hockey images from you in the future 👍
Great photos. Would you say that the camera settings are similar to your typical basketball/volleyball games? Was the ice helpful in lighting up the players a little more?
The light was def better since it bounced off the white ice. Shutter was slightly above 1/1250th most the night and iso was around 1000. So overall better lighting. For autofocus, I bounced from Facial Recognition to Expand AF occasionally. With them wearing black and moving super fast, AF was having a blast.
That’s awesome. The glass is definitely challenging etc. it’s super fun sport to watch. Good video and great photos
Super fun to watch so def was different shooting it. Thanks for watching, I appreciate it!
