Oil Painting: Liquin vs Walnut Alkyd Mediums
Переглядів 1 тис.5 місяців тому
Oil painting can be a frustrating endeavour, add to that slow drying times and you could be tempted to switch to acrylics! In this video, I discuss how alkyd mediums can significantly speed up the drying time when oil painting and compare the Winsor and Newton Liquin Original with M.Graham's Walnut Alkyd Medium. M.Graham did reply to my email a few days after I did this video. They said when th...

    "Both mediums claim to be solvent-free" I don't know if I've ever seen claims that liquin's solvent-free. The MSDS from W&N's website says it contains petroleum distillates, which might explain the smell and the headaches. (I wish it _was_ solvent-free. You can get it everywhere over here, and I wouldn't have to scour youtube for info about the M. Graham and Gamblin media!)

    There you are! I was wondering where you were and what you have available. It’s me your fan, Suzanne‼️ I’ve heard described your research and preparations as “ productive procrastination”. This video and narration is amusing and entertaining! You’re a wonderful artist and totally relatable. I’m working on building my volitional skills.

    If you want something like the M. Graham Walnut Alkyd Medium but in a jellied consistency and no petroleum smell, Gamblin makes a solvent-free gel. Gamblin Neo-Megilp is also an alkyd gel, and is much lighter on the petroleum smell, but is not solvent-free.

    Thank you for reviewing this Holly. I just picked up a starter set of M.Graham that includes this medium. I'm pretty intrigued by it as an alternative to the linseed based stand oil that I've always used.

      @stevechmilar1215 I think you'll like it. Slightly thicker than regular linseed oil but not as thick as stand oil. Gives a nice gloss finish like stand oil 🤗

    How many continuous wet paint workable hours does one get when using walnut alkyd medium

    • @hollyhartwell77
      @hollyhartwell77 3 місяці тому

      Anywhere from 4 to 6 hours, depending on your climate. As soon as it starts to get tacky, I know I need to stop playing with it and let it dry completely. You can also extend this time slightly by oiling out with regular linseed oil, then using the alkyd in your paint mixes.

      @@hollyhartwell77 - After some thought that's a fantastic help! The best I've had so far! At last I know how long I can depend on working in one area with wet paint to get that particular area right. Your information will also cause me to mentally focus better during that open wet paint time I can depend on. Here's a zillion "than you's!"

    I don't know about the alkid version but I do know that the regular walnut oil from m Graham, is recommended to keep it in the refrigerator and that it can go rancid. Supposedly it's still good when rancid it just smells but I don't know if that's true

    • @hollyhartwell77
      @hollyhartwell77 5 місяців тому

      M. Graham did reach out to me and said not to put it in the fridge as it will separate, but to keep it in a dark cupboard. They also said the rancid smell may be just at the neck of the bottle where it's oxidised, and to just wipe around the neck to prevent the smell from occurring.

      Thanks for the fridge (and not) tip. I was wondering if I needed to do anything to keep the oil smelling nice. Mine smells like mild salad dressing which makes painting a hungry endeavour. Especially when painting vegetable still life.

    How'd you go with this one, and did you end up getting second one like you mentioned? I got 4 of the little i300's (300 watt) and 2 100 watt solar panels when they were on special, and they are absolutely fantastic and I've done things with them I never thought I could do. Got from iTechworld too, and you're right - their staff are unreal - really helpful, and really fast to answer questions. I tried talking to 2 other companies when making my decision and the customer service was not good, so I chose to go with iTechworld. I've just purchased one of these 1300 watt ones. Again, grabbed it when it was on special and used the discount codes on some videos here to get it cheaper). I am looking forward to being able to use higher draw appliances soon. It was good as I can use my same solar panels as I got with the i300's to charge this one too, so no more solar panels - although I will probably get some more so I can have everything charging at once. It's good how you mentioned the environmental impact too, as it's something no one thinks about until you have to think about - like you did - the wattages for example the breadmaker you said you chose. For the 300 watt i300's I got this cute little nostalgia mini skillet from Target (for $20 - well free essentially, as I used Flybuys points) and have been able to cook chicken pieces, steak, eggs, and boil water. That same brand has a mini sandwich press and cake maker which I picked up even though they were higher than the 300 watts I knew I had to work with at the time (560 watts I think?) which will come in handy as another way to cook (even though I'll be getting an induction cooker as well that the watts you can change so they don't go over the 1300. I've also discovered MRE's and also dehydrated food (non-refrigerated stuff as I don't currently have refrigeration, and they're amazing. I'm going to make some proper videos with them when I get my next shipment of food from Survival Supplies Australia (also based in Perth, and excellent customer service too). Posts the same day usually as the orders done. All those cords and plugs and powerbanks made me nervous though. Did they go alright? I meant to ask iTechworld about whether doing that was safe (as long as it's under the total watts) and you have reminded me to ask that very question.

      Thank you for letting me know! I just rewatched it and you are correct, at the 3 minute mark the music goes way too loud! It wasn't this loud when I edited it :( Unfortunately (or fortunately) I no longer use that editing software so I either delete the entire video or the other option is you could turn on CC (captions)? 273 views and you're the first person to bother to tell me!! Thank you.
