Thanks for the video I hv done a bunch of those outside trims . I thought 5/4 was an 1 1/4” & 4/4 was an inch ? What am I missing ?

I’ve looked at them but have told myself that I could use my multi-router to do those with the Hoffman bit and keys. I may try that sooner or later. I’m going to share your video with my son in law. He’s an evangelist in South Alabama and is also doing some renovations in their home. He will enjoy. Thanks again.

Gary I know what you said and I hv replaced and fixed the door with cedar shims directly behind the hinge ? Always broken, moved around and impossible to fix w/ o just ripping the jam off ? I am sure you’re aware your friend Gary Katz says that’s a “ NO, NO”! I go above and or below for the middle and after I undo the middle hinge leaf or top and put in a nice 3” construction grade screw to prevent sag of the jam. That way when the painter removes the door he/ she does not mess with your screw placement . I find ppl will not call you back after a couple yrs hv gone by ? The cedar shim deal is ok for quick & easy to learn trust I did it, my dad did it , even marked his level ? But better system are here my friend and I think Gary is being a little stubborn? I still say your my brother in Christ!😀!

Gary as a finish carpenter I hv never done a Murphy bed ? I would enjoy from selecting hardware, wood, to building it so I hv a reference from a pro carpenter! Plenty of DIY stuff however I avoid DIY ? Because it’s not bent towards solving problems to save time & money taking it with you to the next becoming more profitable! DIY is not made for that and can bake in bad habits !

I will give you a tip, take it of leave it. Set frame in hole. Shoot two 2-1/2 finish nails in top middle and bottom of both sides. Than set door. This way you can move/ pry around door until gabs & in and out are right (the nails will hold jamb in place) . Than shim and shoot in nails thru shims. Cut off shims, install. No need for screws. Installed hundreds of doors when i was younger. Cut off shime with Oscillating Multi-Tool.

What type of contractor should I look for to do this type of work?

What a heartfelt Holy Spirit driven testimony Gary. Thank you for sharing this very personal message with folks whom you might not have ever met, however, you obviously know. I have been a builder/ carpenter, inventor for my whole adult life. I just turned 63 2 weeks ago. I had major spine surgery on April 15th, and knee replacement 4 days ago. Without my faith and the unyielding support from Jesus, my life would be in shambles. In today's society and political spectrum, CHRISTians must stand together, spread the word, and raise one another up. Gary Katz, and you have shared so much knowledge with me over the decades and that has helped me become a better builder. May we continue to serve God, take JOY in what we do, and the glory be our LORD'S GOD BLESS you and yours! Glenn

I have seen you wear your nail apron on many occasions during the construction of our two homes. Nice job! For me, an old farmer, a pair of pliers and some baling wire were the essential items to have at all times!
