I got The YoraHome Mandrill for my kids to learn how to use a CNC. Lets see if they can put it together. The Mandrill has a 30x36x5cm (approx. 12x14") work area, which is perfect for small projects and learning how to use a CNC. We built a CNC! Well, we put it together. We assembled a YoraHome 6060 Silverback. It has a 24"x24" work area, ball screw drive on all 3 axis, and an air cooled spindle. I enlisted Jessica's help to put it together and it went pretty smoothly. Jessica was even able to do her very first CNC carve with the silverback and Easel. Here's the problem. EVERYTHING is made in China nowadays. However, there is made in China but to proper specifications (after all, iPhones and many branded tools are all made in China too), vs made in China by lookalikes but low quality. It really makes it hard for consumers. Now if the branded products don't charge like wounded bulls, then we the consumer are less tempted to go for el-cheapo clones. But take for example phones - if a working and not-too-bad phone can be 1/8th the price of iPhone or Samsung, guess which one we buy?

    I’ve noticed something that the sellers do who sell the cheap units: Instead of saying what the lifting capacity is of their units, they’ll use words or phrases like load bearing capacity or support capacity. A lot of us can hold a 200 lb person on our shoulders. It’s quite another thing to lift an unconscious 200 lb person that’s laying down and put them on our shoulders. Cool that you actually show the difference here between load bearing capacity and lifting capacity. Great video!

      It seems they all have their own twist on the scam, except quality product, I have never seen that twist on the scams

  • @FrankATracy
    @FrankATracy 4 місяці тому

    Hi Chris. Not only are there scam units available, but also low and mid quality units available. And furthermore, Stanley, DeWalt and Irwin have also come out with their own versions. Of course DeWalt and Irwin are owned by Stanley so all three of those units are basically the same. Last I heard the Viking Arm is patent PENDING in the U.S. and that’s why all these knockoffs can be sold here. I have some cheap ones. I didn’t even know that the original Viking Arm existed at the time. Mine are ok for small home jobs but nowhere near the quality of the Viking Arm. It’s seems as though the U.S. government is slow to issue patents for nefarious reasons.

    • @CustomCreativeCarvings
      @CustomCreativeCarvings 4 місяці тому

      Thanks, I am interested in seeing how the Stanley arms hold up. As I understand it, a pending patient gives full protection, but China does not honor that protection. What I do know is that Viking Arm makes an awesome product.

    • @FrankATracy
      @FrankATracy 4 місяці тому

      @@CustomCreativeCarvings if that’s true, then that’s why the Stanley, DeWalt and Irwin units are be sold here as well. I know that the Irwin unit is made in China from another video I watched. So I’m sure the Stanley and DeWalt units probably also come from China. And more than likely from the same factory in China. All three units are enclosed so don’t know if they use any plastic or other cheap materials. Would be great if you could show the inside workings of the Stanley units.

      Not that you can totally trust Wikipedia, but in the article about Patent Pending, it mentions that in the United States, patent pending “does not protect an invention until the actual patent is published and/or issued.” However, in the beginning of the article it says that patent pending “serves to notify…potential infringers…that they may be liable for damages (including back-dated royalties)…once a patent is issued.” In any case it sure seems like the U.S. patent office sure drags their feet with patents, sometimes for years or decades. Sounds suspicious to me.

    • @CustomCreativeCarvings
      @CustomCreativeCarvings 4 місяці тому

      That is true, it only protects if the patient is issued. It is suspicious how long they take sometimes.

    • @CustomCreativeCarvings
      @CustomCreativeCarvings 4 місяці тому

      I just looked into the others a little. Just watching how they are used, it looks like they are safe from the patent claim. Patents can not protect the concept, only the mechanism. The way the stanley functions is different enough to distinguish it from the Viking. I do think I need to do a hands-on evaluation and comparison to see if they are worth it and how they compare.

    Now that you've done a review of Cubitron II, would you consider doing a review based on grit type i.e. garnet, flint, aluminum oxide, zirconia, ceramic alumina, ceramic zirconia, and silicone carbide. Having been a fan of 3M Cubitron II, I was appalled that the price has more than doubled in 2 years since I started buying and using it so I started looking for something as durable or more durable. I've so far settled on silicone carbide imported from China because I do a lot of sanding of various oak and elm species and because the longevity is significant. A hard wood like Post Oak or Winged Elm can be very time consuming with the wrong sandpapers. Cost is significant as well as Cubitron II costs about 85 cents per disc (5" 8 hole) but I've found silicone carbide sourced through Amazon to be only about 19 cents per disc and the longevity is better than the Cubitron II. Thanks!

    So the cheap ones will 'hold' but not lift much. But a block of wood will hold, too. So, basically, the cheap knockoff is not as useful as a block of wood.

    • @CustomCreativeCarvings
      @CustomCreativeCarvings 7 місяців тому

      Yeah, of the 2 sets of cheap that I ordered, the first was drone parts, which had no use at all, the second could work for light duty work. They were clumsy and harder to use, but they were probably worth the price (except one came broken). I definitely recommend the real thing, but for occasional light use, the cheapo could work (as long as they send you a lift). Just be ready to call your credit card company. Thanks for watching, I appreciate the comment as well.

    Evidently, your presentation is NOT for absolute beginners, as there are many steps/ assumptions which, in the making, omit steps that beginners would miss. As an example, if I was sending you a recipe and omitted spices, assuming that you knew about using specific spices, you would never cook a meal, as would I. Consequently, leaving out the software used, etcetera, and the picture is not sharp left me asking more questions about the value of the presentation too. However, from a struggling CNC owner, have a great 2024.

    I'm fully behind using CNC to make something more complex! 🙂However: as a beekeeper, this is possibly the worst of all worlds. In foundationless frames, the idea is to let the bees draw out comb *as they need to, in the pattern they need*, noting that bees will make larger and smaller comb depending on the use. You can then *cut the entire frame out* to harvest it. In this design, it needless restricts how the bees can draw comb, while making it extremely difficult to harvest. It may be possible to put these frames in a spinner because of the extra support, but you'd have a hell of a time uncapping first. So 10/10 for creativity! But maybe not in practice... ;-)

    • @CustomCreativeCarvings
      @CustomCreativeCarvings 11 місяців тому

      I agree with you 100%. If you are looking to extract, then this is not the way to go. This works great for a very specific niche, display, and use. When full, it makes a beautiful display piece that provides an easy way to cut out a hex of comb for use. While not for everyone, it provides a 1 of a kind useable display. The last one I sold, I built a wood stand and an acrylic display cover for.

    What a perspective change, my wood shop is a hobby, fishing, and watching sunsets on the boat is a hobby, but somehow drawing up plans to switch my gas 305 with diesel with a 10k-15k budget wasn't even fazing me (despite only hitting the boat on weekends at most) while I am in the shop almost every day, and agonizing over a 3-4k versus 5k plus CNC is driving me nuts on pulling the trigger. After your video, I have realized I just need to raise my budget on both, and maybe find a CNC that can slab out yellow tail and halibut for me.

      I am glad I was able to help. In my opinion, the best value for a CNC to get started with is in used machines. Do your research, figure out what your needs are and what CNC features fill those needs, then find that CNC. P.S. I have already paid for my next trip, I'll get a tuna this time!

  • @jclar3565
    @jclar3565 Рік тому

    The real issue is in the event of a small, sawdust fire. You’re going to get a concussion, and that will knock more sawdust off of rafters or equipment, which within a fraction of a second will also add to the fuel of the sawdust fire, this will create a second concussion. That’s even larger, and can knock sawdust out of corners from every nook and cranny that might have been accumulating for years resulting in a catastrophic explosion that can literally blow up a building. There are OSHA videos about this.

    Ok boss I’m sorry I had to comment. This was an absolutely waste of my time and others. You compared it to a single item. I thought how big of a spectacle to made this to be with 4 different parts I was going to spend 220.00 on this item. I actually think I need to do more research now. You should have just made 1 video unboxing and very small comparison review would have been a better title just so I was not upset and let down by the end. Hopefully if you make more in the future you do a real showdown like I watch people do with their tool videos. Thanks for trying. Good luck.

      I found 4 over 100.00 that claim to be all steel I am comparing to decide. But I saw like 25 on amazon alone.

      I appreciate the comment. My original intent was to do it more like you suggested, but with shipping delays and other issues it didn't work out. I probably should have been more patient and waited until everything had made it in. I would definitely recommend doing a lot more research before buying any other brand. I will say that to this day I am glad that I have a Viking Arm, it is handy and dependable. I do apologize for the wasted time, I try to continuously improve my content.

      Thanks, I have considered redoing this one now that I have a lot more experience, but I think there is value in my naiveté. And the kids were cuter back then 😉

    Excellent video Chris. I really enjoyed doing this collaboration. It's crazy that we both used the lathe when it's not our norm. It was nice to step out if my comfort zone. I would definitely do another collaboration. Merry Christmas to you and your family.
