    That kind of training is about as hard as it gets. Particularly running alone. Not sure how much recovery you gave yourself between the 200 & 400? I’d have thought 10-15 minutes at least!

      Hi Michael. Yes. Dooneen meet at UL track every Tuesday evening around 6.15 with upto 40 runners. The sessions vary but you will get to meet alot of runners who run other days including weekend long runs, sometimes in Cratloe woods for a change of terrain. That would be a great starting point for you. Also the park runs in UL and Mungret Park every Saturday morning at 9.30 are a great way of meeting runners.

    Nice video Dermot. A sub-3 is a major goal for me. My current PB is 3:23 from Dublin back in 2019, but I think I can go faster with the right approach to training. Right now I'm in a training block for Dublin 2022, but once that is done would I be best off trying to focus exclusively on getting my 10K time down near that 38 minutes?

    That's a super time for a training session. I'm looking to break 75 minutes in a 10 miler in 4 weeks. Only took up running about 3 years ago (I'm 52) but played soccer up until I was 46. I smoked for 35 years until I got menieres disease about 4 years ago which seriously interferes with training when I get an attack but the running has helped in some way to keep them at bay for longer.

      Best of luck with the race Paul. So you are looking at running 7.28 per mile to run 74.40. So what I find the most important is getting really comfortable running this pace. To do this I recommend shorter tempo runs faster than race pace. For example a 20 mins tempo run at 7 minute mile pace..and then another good session would be 4/5 x 1km @ 6.15/6.30 mile pace.. Any advice you need Paul feel free to ask..

    He's a nice guy but he's starting to relegate himself to being a one-trick pony (PPM). The "tummy ache" excuse for his poor performance always seemed a bit off to me, like he was covering up for a major bonk/blowup. Normally I wouldn't care, but when someone acts like an authority on running, and throws out goals like finishing top 3 American (which would've required him to run 2:12 in NYC this year LOL), it really makes him look like a doofus. Hopefully he'll do well in his next marathon and stick to saner strategy.

    The race went bad for GI issues. A guy with his level of fitness and aerobic base simply doesn’t bonk at marathon distance. He didn’t run 3 hours because of lack of threshold pace lmao GI issues have nothing to do with too little speed work. Vast majority of marathon runners over emphasize speed work and under emphasize aerobic engine. Using an unrelated on course issue as evidence for a unsubstantiated argument is really silly.

    • @dermotkearnstheemeraldisle4078
      @dermotkearnstheemeraldisle4078 3 роки тому

      Hi Daniel. I am not stating that he ran 3hrs because of lack of speed workouts. I am staying that he was not in the shape to run a sub 2.20 marathon based on his effort in Detroit. Intake of too many gels during a really hard effort can bring on stomach issues and I appreciate that I would still have the same perspective whether Seth ran 2.30..

  • @TGoesOutside

    Dermot, completely agree with everything you said! I don’t even know if I’d count a true rest after PPM, with the crazy, sleepless travel and filming for UTMB. And with how he was recovering so slowly after a HARD effort at Detroit half, no way to maintain that same pace for an entire hilly marathon. I’m sure nutrition played a major factor, but also wondering if the stomach wouldn’t have been so awful had he gone out in a more reasonable pace. Even someone running 100s of miles a week during training wouldn’t do a 20+ mi run during race week, i think that could’ve taken more out of him. Do we know how many Maurten caff he consumed before and during? Any more than 2 could really cause nausea.

    • @dermotkearnstheemeraldisle4078
      @dermotkearnstheemeraldisle4078 3 роки тому

      I remember that morning in the vlog he downed one and maybe one before the start. Then one at mile 5 and one at mile 10...He did say he took the Maurten gels for PPM so who knows...All I am saying is that even without stomach issues in my opinion he wouldn't have sustained the pace he went out at. This pace was within a minute of his Detroit half...Based on how hard he worked in Detroit half he was not in the shape to run 70ish back to back...End of story🤔😊

      It sure looks to me like he would have been damn close to his time without the GI issues and it seems really unscientific to try to pin GI issues on high mileage training. He went through the first half in just over 1:10 so he had the turnover speed and the biggest point of high mileage is not that it makes you go faster but that you don't have to slow down. All of the arguments that people put forth for reducing mileage are really based around the issues of overuse injuries, which are a legitimate risk but given that that didn't happen its hard to fault Seth for seeing what happened when he pushed his mileage. It's completely backwards to assert that high mileage training would lead to someone slowing down later in a race as opposed to doing speedwork which doesn't increase endurance but the top end speed. If someone's 1/2 marathon pace puts them close to their marathon goals, it makes way more sense to figure out how to keep that pace longer than to put effort into increasing their mile time. Dermot doesn't have any reason whatsoever for supposing that Seth would have slowed down.

      @dermotkearnstheemeraldisle4078 3 роки тому

      @@franklehouillier8865 Hi Frank. All I am saying is that it wasn't a normal training block as you know. 16 weeks is a standard for the perfect training block which includes the very important taper. Remember as Seth says arrive fit,fresh and healthy. My argument was that he wasn't fresh for this race and the he hadn't recovered from the high mileage weeks as there wasn't a proper taper. He already had a huge aerobic base. I take on board your sentiment but from my calculations he would have needed to run 65 or faster to be primed for a sub 2.20...Just my opinion..

    He did 5 140 mile weeks btw, not 4. And it was almost all on singles, so essentially a 20 miler a day. And only added some basic, non Marathon-specific track workouts in what was essentially a 4 week taper afterwards. He has the talent to go maybe 2:16-17 but really needs to reevaluate his training for the roads.

      Apologies Robin... It was 5, my mistake. I agree with your sentiment. I just think he was being unrealistic trying to run a sub 2.20 marathon, especially in New York. I ran New York twice and it is a really challenging course especially the last 4 miles.
