How To Create and Share Google Docs in Google Drive
This is a short introduction to creating and sharing Google Docs in Google Drive. I made it because some of my adult ESOL students have not used Google Drive or Google Docs before and are not confident about creating, sharing, and working with documents.

Get all the images out of office documents
Переглядів 79Місяць тому
TLDR: modern office suite files are just zip files. Unzip to get the pics. Ever need to get all of the images out of a document or slide deck? If you are lucky, the software you are using has a right click "Save image" option. But, even if it does, do you really want to do that to save 30 images? Or, what if your slide deck is too big for Google Translate because of the huge images a teacher in...

Recording a Reading Passage with Audacity

In this video, I show you how to record yourself reading a passage for your students, and then 1) edit it to get rid of pauses and errors; 2) apply some effects to make it sound better; and 3) export it as an mp3 file. I record many reading passages for my adult ESOL students, and some for my k-12 students, depending on their level. Listening and reading is very helpful for developing both read...

      Ouch, that is a lot of work. I'll do some digging to see if there is an easier way. Do you have a lot of families in those 10 languages? That is, is it a significant amount compared with the total number of families? It might be worth looking at a paid service - such as SurveyMonkey or SurveyLab that can do multilingual forms. But, I've never used either for multilingual forms, so can't promise they would be any easier than Google Forms to make multilingual.

      Glad it helped. I'm hoping to make an updated video during winter break about translating forms. I'm now using an AppScript in the Form to translate. It isn't perfect, but it is a lot faster and easier for most Forms. So, I guess I'm saying check back in a few weeks for maybe an improved method. (Or just email me.)

    How would you add more languages to translate in the App script?

    • @TokugawaIemitsu
      @TokugawaIemitsu 2 місяці тому

      Great question. I sort of went right past that in the video. To add or remove languages, open the Apps Script (from Extensions => Apps Script). In the sidebar.html file, find this section: const languages = { ar: 'Arabic', zh: 'Chinese', en: 'English', fr: 'French', de: 'German', hi: 'Hindi', ja: 'Japanese', pl: 'Polish', es: 'Spanish', ru: 'Russian' }; Add or remove languages you want or don't want, but be careful with the formatting. It must be: [two-letter language code]: '[Language Name]', notice the colon, the single quotes, and then the comma at the end of each line, but NOT the final line. The [Language Name] can be anything, in any language, but the [two-letter language code] MUST be correct. Find the language codes at: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ISO_639_language_codes We only use the two-letter codes from that page. We don't need the other, longer codes. Be sure to save, and you might have to reload the slide deck.

    There's no way to make this a quiz like in google forms quizzes, correct? Meaning getting it to show the correct answers after the test is submitted with a score.

    • @TokugawaIemitsu
      @TokugawaIemitsu 3 роки тому

      No, not that I am aware of. Not sure if maybe you could have Google Classroom share a doc *after* students submitted the assigned document? Or maybe someone has an add on that adds quiz-like features to docs?

    Good to see another active fluxbox user. Personally not a big fan of tabbing yet glad it works for you. I would love to have an option not to compile this function in but there isn't one.

    • @TokugawaIemitsu

      I think of tabbing as sort of tiled (but fullscreen) window management made easy. I used i3 for a while on a laptop (a while back) and loved it. Didn't love not being able to easily have gaps or dealing with things like gimp that open multiple windows. For me, tabs on fluxbox are close, but much easier to deal with because they are still just floating windows. But, yeah, I used Fluxbox for years and years before I started using tabs. Now, my work flow and tabbing have sort of merged. I have browsers on desktop 1 (all usually tabbed), instant messaging on 2, not tabbed, editors and misc on 3 (tabbed), misc on 4 (usually not tabbed), 7 terminals for email (long story) on 5 (all tabbed), etc. So, sometimes tabbed, sometimes not.

    Man, I wish you would have shown HOW you got the windows grouped together. I've installed Fluxbox and can't seem to figure it out so far even after reading some of the tab documentation. It isn't working for me yet. Your video was no help for my objective!

    • @TokugawaIemitsu
      @TokugawaIemitsu 3 роки тому

      Good point about showing how to group the windows. The settings for this are in your $HOME/.fluxbox/keys file. The line for tabbing / grouping looks like: OnTitlebar Mod4 Mouse1 :StartTabbing "OnTitlebar" means this line has to do with events involving the titlebar - so you could have more than one line starting with this. "Mod4" is the Windows / Super key. I don't recall the default - it might be Alt, which is Mod1 on my machine. "Mouse1" is a left mouse button. :StartTabbing is the command to Fluxbox to tab the windows involved To use it, press the appropriate Mod key (Mod4 for me), then click and hold on the titlebar of the window you want to tab with another window. Drag to the other window's titlebar and release. The window you moved will take the size of the window you dropped it on. The windows are now tab grouped. To ungroup, just do the same and drop the window anywhere that isn't a window titlebar.
