The Bridge of Ghosts - The story of the St Justinian lifeboat tragedy
The St Justinian lifeboat station is on the St Davids Peninsular in Pembrokeshire, Wales. It is on the shore of a waterway called Ramsey Sound as it is in the shadow of Ramsey Island.
This story is generally remembered as a tragedy, as three men lost their lives that day. But to me it is also a story very much about resilience and ingenuity as the odds of anyone surviving what these men went through must have been zero.
The St Justinian Lifeboat Station dates back to 1897 and over 360 souls owe it their lives.
These are the events of 13th of October 1910 when a storm battered the Pembrokeshire Coastline and a boat called The Democrat got into trouble. The lifeboat called The Gem was launched to go to their aid.
This video tells the story of what happened next on Ramsey Sound. And how 18 lives were nearly dashed on the rocks known as “The Bitches”.
This video is written, presented and produced by Welsh author and historian; Graham Loveluck-Edwards. Author of 'Monica', 'Historic Pubs of Wales' and the 'Legends and Folklore of Bridgend and the Vale' series of books, published by Candy Jar Books LTD (Cardiff). I hope you enjoy it.
