Vlogs, installs & reviews of my 2022 Hyundai Kona N as well as Hyundai N performance lifestyle content!
These are Some of the Major Issues with the Kona N
It's another recall for the 2022 - 2023 Hyundai Kona N as well as the Veloster N, Elantra N and the Genesis GV70. This recall affects the HPFP which could lead to limp mode before shutting down.
Definitely a scary situation, but in this video I'm also going to highlight some of the known major issues for the Kona N and N platform overall. No manufacturer is perfect including Hyundai.

In this video I install the @torconpowerlab5919 exhaust valve spring to help fix some exhaust rattle (although now after watching the video my valve might just be open all the time lol). But def can hear the difference. Afterwards I buy a new family daily driver with the 2020 Honda Odyssey Minivan and then head to the @SoCalNClub end of summer Cars N Coffee, one of California's largest Hyundai ...

Upgrading the Intercooler on My 2022 Hyundai Kona N

In this video I install the @SXTHElementEngineering Upgraded Intercooler for the 2022-2023 Hyundai Kona N. But, it wasn't without it's struggles. I had to modify a few pieces in order for it to fit around my other aftermarket parts such as my Forge Oil Cooler as well as larger diameter aFe charge pipes. After a few cuts on my hands I was able to successfully install the intercooler. Shoutout to...

Testing Fitting the Takeda Turbo Inlet on the Kona N at aFe
Very nice piece fellas, my Kona definitely needs it! I do have a question though, when are y’all gonna make a lower grill with a larger opening for the intercooler? I’m not sure why they chose to make the opening so small but I’m sure it would help keep IAT’s down and would also benefit the Forge intercooler I’m running. Keep up the great work and I look forward to seeing more product development!👍👍
Loving the Kona N content. Take a look at rinseless washing. I use it in my ceramic coating/wrap business, so I know It'll work wonders for enthusiast use. I use McKee's 37, but any brand will work wonders. Cheers.
Exactly the Kona N content I'm looking for. Thank you.
Great comparison video! They dont give those away do they? Im still unsure about volume levels too
Are you still on eibach pro kit lowering springs? Also, where can i order the peaches sticker?
Why is there this many red KNs in Cali lol I got no love over here in Florida
Japan invaded Korea, killed thousands and performed horrific experiments on people and now they promote Hyundai 😂😂😂, how random
I like the sound and size of the tips on the X-Force. Thanks this was very helpful
What's up Gavin!! I got my 22 KN on the 3rd and I absolutely love it. You and NDriverKG were the reasons I wanted a N car for my next car. A little worried about this recent hpfp recall but I'm going to schedule it with them when I go for my oil change service this weekend. I've never been so excited to daily drive a car until I got the KN. Thanks for all the KN content you do!!
I've had my '22 for about a month and a half now, so the DCT recall was completed before I bought it. The software update was completed for the fuel pump recall today and everything seems to be ok. Hoping I don't have to have the pump replaced. But my only gripe with the car so far is the octane learning. It's not a huge issue though, because it's my daily and I do a lot of highway driving.
Cali question, do you know any Downpipe that fit in w/o any modifications required for the 2023 Kona N? Or it just doesnt exists?
Have they fixed it?
love how the xforce system sounds!! Definitely going with that exhaust for my Kona N!!
Hell yeah! ✊🏾 let us know how it turns out
Do you remap ecu ?
For the intake no, haven’t done any ECU tuning yet!
Currently looking at a Kona N but waiting for the dealer to get back to me on it because of the fuel pump recall.
Ah hopefully it gets all sorted out!
Does this effect the adaptive dampers?
Nope! Active dampers will still work!
I have a issue where the car does not turn off fully in some circumstances. I then need to restart the car and stop it again to get the infotainment system to go off. Also can't lock car during the issue.
Oh interesting (and scary)! Have you been able to figure out or have a guess why? Faulty fuse somewhere? Or wiring issue?
@@CaliforniaKonaN there are 2 circumstances. One I can reproduce, but the other is random. 1. Stop the car in neutral, then move to park. The car goes into accessory mode. Infotainment stays on, but you can't turn the car off or lock up. Easy workaround is to stop in park, but I some circumstances you might already be in neutral while talking or waiting. 2. Similar but turning off when already in park. Videos sent to Hyundai but the dealer doesn't seem to care
Did you carbon caps for the sides mirrors left an uncover spot by the end?
You mean by where the blinker area is?
@@CaliforniaKonaN no not the blinkers but towards the back kinda where the red arrow on the thumbnail you have on the video on the side mirror
@@symphonynilvalen5263 Ah yeah, it stops around a .25in or so. So IT DOESNT cover to the edge of the mirror!
Would you be able to make a video on how to install the K&N intake. I know you have since switched to the Takeda intake but is there any video. I have looked around for a while and can't find one. Only reason i'm asking is because I would like to do it myself and not pay the shop fees but the K&N directions aren't very good. Love your videos!🐼
Ah I’m thinking of switching back to K&N for the fall cause love the noise better but not sure when I can find the time to record or even just to install. But if you search “intake install Veloster N” it’s pretty similar in approach. I’m not mechanically inclined but able to do. What helps too is too see how the stock one is put on and reverse engineer it sorta. I’ll see if I can do a how too tho when I can find the time to put the K&N intake back on!
@@CaliforniaKonaN Gotcha, I appreciate it so much! Can’t wait to see what you do in the future!
I’ve been reading that this bov is illegal, is that true?
Not 100% sure but yeah most of them list as “for off-road use only”
It is generally illegal for a car manufacturer to completely void a warranty solely because of modifications made to a vehicle, thanks to the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, which requires them to prove that the modification directly caused the problem requiring repair before denying warranty coverage; meaning they can't simply deny a claim just because aftermarket parts are installed. The Magnuson Moss Warranty Act requires manufacturers to honor the original warranty unless they can prove that the aftermarket modification (either the parts or installation) was responsible for the failure that caused warranty repairs.
Do they all void the warranty though?? I just bought my daughter a 23 Kona N and she wants a exhaust
I mean technically they can void your warranty but the exhaust has to be the cause of the issue. But again depends on your dealer. Safest bet is to put the stock exhaust back if you’re going in for warranty work!
When are you coming out with more merchandise? Need something for my Elantra n 👍
Ah got the EN corner rascal shirt / hoodie and I got some N car plushies coming soon!
@@CaliforniaKonaN on the website? I didn’t see them
@@MrMajinbu coming soon! Just gotta prep and review the samples etc it’ll be on the website but also follow @cali_kona_n and @tigerspeedshop I drop updates there too
I like to have this master of the Kona N to help learn from 👍
Hah I still gotta ways to go, I gotta learn more myself! 🙏🏾
My 2020 Veloster N does not have this "new" octane learning. I can vary my octane and when I go from 87 to 93 it seems to take about 1/4 tank until I get full boost and better throttle response. No special driving needed. Glad I do not have this octane learning. The OEM brake pads are semi-metallic and that is why they are so dirty. I will eventually go to EBC Red Stuff too. BTW, I like my P Zero tires, but they are nearly spent. I have a second set of wheels and tires for off season (18" wheels with Pilot Sport All Seasons). I love my Veloster N which has been flawless for over four years.
And it comes in a manual! Man hopefully look to own a VN in the future if the funds can allow me lol but sounds like an awesome platform based on your comment!
Also the front end suspension noises when going up inclines, dips in a driveway, etc.
Ah is this with the stock springs?
@@CaliforniaKonaN Yup
Mine does this when the temperature goes down. Im going mention it to the dealership on the next oil change.
@@punemax I live in FL where it's always hot and mine does it all the time. I went to 1 dealer and they tried to tell me it was because of my aftermarket wheels (which is bs) so I swapped the stock one back on and went back but then I couldn't get it to replicate the sound on the roads by the dealer so I'm gonna end up taking it to a different dealer
I haven't had any problems with my kona n, i did replace the hpfp tho and i also a stage 2 tune from sxth, i upgraded my brake pods too . I received a letter about the hpfp but im gonna take it in, one thing i want to mention i do all my services myself oil change every 2500 mile since i bought the car over 2 years now the dealer never see it again.
Yeah i started doing my oil changes myself now! How is the tune for sxth? Hoping to get a tune in the future!
@@CaliforniaKonaN the car comes alive, totally worth it
I’ve had it all, knock sensor, horn, squeaky breaks and I’m at 30,000km. It still goes 😭
Oh nooooo :( hopefully the issues settle down that sucks to hear
My cars on the recall list, I got my letter. Waiting for the fix.
hope it comes through soon!
The tire and brake pad issues you mentioned are simply characteristics of that product. BMW vehicles also have the same characteristics. You shouldn’t call that an issue. Also, don’t raise the PSI in such a way. It’s a major cause of engine damage. If you uses regular fuel, and raise the PSI to 20, it puts significant strain on the engine. Then, are you planning to file a lawsuit claiming there’s an engine problem? If that happens, Hyundai might stop the N division altogether.
I can't go through a car wash without cel coming on in my 22 kona n. 25k miles, dealership just replaces knock sensor over and over. Ordered a replacement undercarriage splash guard that I'm going to cover all gaps with material and try the car wash again. This by far most annoying thing owning my kona n.
Ugh dang, its crazy cause I've been in some heavy rain for long periods and haven't had the knock sensor issue. Hopefully that splash guard replacements helps for your KN!
I've been having a strange issue on my Kona N. When i first engage drive or reverse the car won't move until I give it some gas then a clunk sound the car then jolts forward or back. The cars perfectly normal after that. I don't have a clue whats causing that to happen as i have checked my brake pads and they are fine.
I getcthat too sometimes on my 22 kona n
I’ve got the same think on my Kona N
Ha dang I've noticed this on mine too. I've kinda had to stop and give it a second when I throw it in Reverse, and try to go as slow as possible. Damn might have to do a part 2 to include this and the horn issue!
Hyundai just released a software update today. Was it for audio? Just curious if you got it.
LOL tbh I haven't done any OTA software updates for the infotainment.
Drama Sturing....LOL just kidding. I have had no issues but the info on the octane learning is helpful, I will have to check that. I have not got my recall notice yet but it is noted on my registration renewal notice.
Haha was going to be more click-baity next time! Yeah I wonder when the VN EN letters roll out, keep us updated!
Ive never seen anything over 18psi. I keep hearing people saying they get 19-20. Wonder what I'm missing here. Octane learning limits to 15psi for me and then unlocks to 18. Have never seen more than that. Also just got the recall papers. The letter still states they have no fix yet.
Yeah got my letter too, mine said it wasn't ready but they did have a remedy which was to update the ECM and worst case replace the HPFP. But def still a waiting game so knock on wood nothin happens between now and the next letter! Interesting that you're capped at 18 psi. Do you have any supporting mods? I've hit 20 but rarely ever have it octane learned so mostly 15-16 psi most of the time.
"less" that optimal in cold/snow is an understatement with the summer ties. I have winters on my Kona I swap, but I waited too long last year and it was just miserable driving on those summers when it was getting down in the low 40's.
Dang, hopefully the winters helped! I think just lucky to have warm climate all around here but also swapping tires early on helped me avoid longer use of the Pzeros!
@@CaliforniaKonaN The winters are a huge help. I welcome snow once I swap them yearly.
Yea, I hate my brakes, cleaning brake dust every f...ng day off my superspeeds............. THIS HAS TO BE MOST ANNOYING THING EVER!!!
hah yes! thought my wheel color was brake dust brown for the longest time.
These are mostly minor issues for a niche performance car.
facts!
I noticed the brake issue when running the Dragon and surrounding roads back in 2022 when the car was 9 monthes old. It went away after I was done and heading back home👈 The knock sensor issue hit me TWICE in 1.5 yrs, using the touch-free wash for 1 year on the 1st one, 6 monthes for the 2nd one, now I don't even use the touch-free wash anymore, kinda pathetic IMO🙄
I've noticed a dip in hp numbers when measuring the numbers using the onboard dyno, so I'm wondering if my HPFP is getting "weaker"🤷♂️ I'm hoping they replace my HPFP. I mean the perf seems good but when I had my N75 Stage 1 tune installed I'd get this "partial throttle" issue but when stock ECU went back in this issue went away....so "possibly" the tune exposed the issue with the HPFP 🤷♂️ I guess we'll see...stay "tuned"🤔
Ah, I was thinking of going stage 2 with a tune from N75. Did you do the upgraded HPFP or did you have stock one when you got the tune? Did you do any data logging? Hopefully it gets worked out!
@CaliforniaKonaN no data logging but I had/have Stage 1, so no need for the upgraded HPFP
Damn, I forgot about the Horns that stop working!
I've been in THREE times for the horns in 2.5 yrs🤷♂️
@@klasseact6663 Damn thats crazy!
I've had 2 new horns now.
@@scottbronder dang I really dropped the ball not putting the horn issue!
Yep, my horns had to be replaced injector also. I don't see octane learning if you're only running 91 all the time.Do you think the EBC pads are better than the stock ones for everyday driving?
Thank you for posting this video! Currently looking for to replace the current exhaust! And these video breakdown really helped!
Ah that’s awesome glad the video helped!
