This video is incredibly helpful. Does he have one showing how to mount a collet like this (is it called a rex collet?) onto a band/bridge?
@JJ-gm1mk I've done another video that is a two partner that shows it all. Including making the shank and rex collet. I can't remember how many video after this one it was though. Not many.
@@metalofhonour Ok, I'll track those down. Thank you!
Nice one Ydna. What a great idea for a clasp! Never seen this type before, but so simple and effective. Thanks for sharing this.
@phillbearman359 cheers mate. Simple is often the best and longer lasting option.
Thx for this simple video explaining a thing that I'm scared to do as an amateur! Definitely going to give it a try now. Love that you actually put in the effort to make vids like this, that explain basics, to help folks like me out! keep up the great work!
This style of clasp can be seen on old brass flag shackles, it didn't matter which way the wind blew it was nigh on impossible for the shackle to come open accidentally. Thanks for a very clear video,
@nj40100 sure. It's always the oldest ideas that are the best. I didn't actually know this or ever seen this. Thanks for that. I love learning new stuff too.
That is a beautiful clasp! I look forward to trying it! Thank you, Ydna❤
@jeannem413 thank you. It's a great one to make.
So glad you’re back! Your tutorials are the most informative and helpful of all the ones I watch. I just used the bezel setting technique you demonstrated in the stacking rings video and it’s the easiest and fastest way I’ve ever done. Thank you!
@lauramcfalls434 thanks for watching and listening. Really pleased they helped you out. Feel free to share video links on Facebook groups etc to spread the channel further. 👍🏼👍🏼
great soldering, it makes the piece. I will use this clasp for bracelets, thanks much.

@@tanglethebeast5446 thank you. 👍🏼👍🏼
Brilliant Andy, thanks for the tutorial your efforts and knowledge appreciated. I'm 5 months in smithing and I'm obsessed and hooked! I've made byzantine chains and bracelets in copper, but now going to attempt in 925 for sons 14th birthday. Was going to attempt a box clasp but now giving serious consideration to a C clasp. BTW, do you have an insta account? Or email address, would love your professional opinion on a couple of things. Damien.
@damienolive2185 sure. It's a lot to learn in one go. So much missguided info out there. This clasp is much easier than a box snap for sure. I will be doing a video on that at some stage. I have released my insta and website on a previous video, but my wife deals with all those messages. And it would take too many hours out my day to answer everyone. I do have a Discord server page setup that I was slowly building up. Pics can be added on there and I can answer when I get a chance. discord.gg/jaSqAkPS Thats a Discord invite link. My insta though, if you want to have a nose and see my actual business, is @Lawley_design These clasps can be really good for lads jewellery too. So strong too. 👍🏼
Never seen this kind of clasp before, looks great. Thanks for sharing and have a great week.
Sorry I have been away since June 30th. I moved and it took almost 3 months to get my studio setup.. plus the U-haul truck wrecked my car while it was being towed behind the U-Haul, anyway I’m glad to be back. I have my UA-cam channel setup now… I just need to start putting up my videos. I have some catching up to do and watch your videos. Great idea I love this clasp. Another great video. 👏👏👏Michelle
@aumi.jewels thanks Michelle. I was wondering how your move went, and I hadn't seen a comment for a while. Hope you've settled in now. Also hope insurances have covered any wrong doing by now. Sounds like a nightmare. Pleased to see you back 👍🏼

I am just learning but you make me want to learn more faster. I know this is a time consuming thing but I will learn it. Your videos are great as far as I am concerned. Thank you for putting them up. Now I am off to find another one of yours. Take care man.
@jimconacher104 cheers fella. Appreciate you watching the vids. My master plan was to teach people properly. I checked before I started and so many others cut so much out, that I could see their mistakes and how they've fixed them off camera. Keep the camera rolling I say 👍🏼

Im going to try doing this for my current engagement ring project. I will definitely be working this in silver first…. Ive been making jewelry for about 15 years. I took a fine jewelry diploma course based out of London… Im curious to see if I can do this. I think I can.
You've just got to think positive and relax. Don't get disheartened if it doesn't go to plan and willing to start again. The more chilled you are, you'll find you'll be happier with the result each time. When I teach people, they generally pick it up fast. There's a diploma course called jewellery academy that costs a fortune and pointless projects. That's the worst one. I've met a few people that have done this particular course and none of them are happy with their progress. Good solid teaching from the beginning and I'd get someone to make this perfectly after a two week solid course. There are good courses around too from what I've heard. Good luck with the jewellery.
@ thank you. I think you’re right. Just stay chill. I’ve learned about of good tips from Jewelers Academy and made a few good jeweler friends. So far the project of the endgames ring is going well. I’ve watched this video on making a shank to fit a setting about 100 times. It’s so helpful. I broke down the process into days and took my time. It seems to be going well. I’m setting the stone on Friday. I really enjoy the way you teach. It’s super chill, simple and I feel like I can easily practice the techniques. Thank you for doing these videos. If you open a school or offer a course… I would do it. Thank you again.
@Jennifer_Tabick cheers. I was shocked when a friends showed me how much the jewellery academy course was, and so many pointless projects that aren't needed. I was just so shocked with the cost. And she showed me the video links of the person making the piece and it was worse than youtube videos and I could tell all the work done off camera. Just wasn't fair. Really pleased their helping and thanks for watching so much.
@ I could see that happening .. but for me it wasn’t about the cost it was about the community and needing the education in something I couldn’t get in person help with. This included zoom classes & personal help albeit on zoom. On the flip side I’m super encouraged you are answering me here. I also am thankful for your insight on this topic, lessons you record and lots of priceless information you share to help me and a lot of others in this business. If you had a zoom class I’d for sure sign up even for just one. You’ve got a loyal viewer in me… 👍🏼
Hola, maravilloso trabajo, yo use un collar con ese trabajo pero más delgado todo, es muy lindo❤, pregunta: como se llama la herramienta que ocupas para cortar y limar recto las piezas ?

@justinemajewelry7908 so pleased to hear that. Makes it more worthwhile for me too, just knowing they help.
Thanks for another great vid, really enjoyed it. If I have to make more than 5 jump rings I use a cordless drill, mainly because my left arm does'nt work very well these days.
Great bracelet. Great how you make the jump rings. Surprising how difficult it can be getting good quality, neat jump rings with a good join. If you’re making a bearing for a single or double gallery claw setting, it soon shows up if you don’t get it right. I’ve made loads of them and had to start again as it’s just not right. Thanks for the vide and guidance.
@phillbearman359 thanks for supporting Phil, by watching more vids and commenting. You're more than welcome. For double gallery stuff, I always find it best to try and hide them behind the claws.
Thank you for sharing exactly what nobody else shears good tips! including how learning and using your engraving skills gave you scars.

I’m going to do this to some felts tomorrow!
@jeannem413 these ones from Fischer in Germany are the best ones to do it with. Most of the normal ones I used to buy here in the UK are generally trash. But these felts help so much.
That bracelet is beautiful! I appreciate watching you solder the rings to the ends of the links-I wasn’t sure how to stabilize the pieces to solder them, but you gave me a great technique to try. Many thanks!!❤

@metalofhonour for sure! It's so spot on for me so I'll probably watch you for a long time to come and learn as much as I can. Been a plasterer 15 years but if you ever want a apprentice I'll work for free round the clock.
@nicberardino1087 cheers. I've had a lot of people offer before. I took someone on 3 years ago and after 3 weeks, my normal work work got months behind. Please do keep watching. Another video coming soon. Appreciate you watching and comments always help the channel.
@metalofhonour yes it actually costs to teach people that's what they don't realise. There's a grandiosity that comes with being a student after so long....it's the same with what I do for my work. But yeah. awesome man can't wait to see this new content. You have a real nice way about you man.
I used a copper rod to clean my files it would reach all the way down and take out the dirt.
Great tip, will definitely give this a try. Clogged up files are a real pain.
Thank you. It's really doesn't take long to keep on top of it. And it helps so much.
Thanks very much for this and all your videos. I will definitely try this on my course files. I use a 6mm x 20mm thin copper scrap sheet. I use the rolling mill to pinch the narrow end very thin and it works great on my fine cut files when it gets little groves along the long edge and pushes all those little bits out very well. Thanks again. Great content. Always learn something new from you.
I still use thicker sheet offcuts on my fine files, as it takes the shape of the grooves still. 👍🏼 Thanks for watching and commenting. It really helps the channel.
Pferd has better brass brushes that actually work well. For the smaller files I use a no name 0.08mm brass brush.
@Coconut7403 I've tried various wire steel and brass brushes. This is always my favourite. Someone else on here suggested a type of chalk that I'll try and find and give that a try. 👍🏼
Great tips! Have you tried using french chalk to stop the softer metals from sticking to your file?
@Gazz_R I think you may have suggested that before, or maybe someone else. I forgot about that or I would have given you a mention. I'll have to get some and try. Thanks 👍🏼
@@metalofhonour I tell that many people, I could'nt remember if I mentioned it or not. 🤣

great video as always! was curious what flux and "pickle" solution are you using for soldering
@kisslory thank you. Pickle at the money is the standard safety pickle. And the flux has many names, it's the bright yellow liquid flux. this bottle is called Auflux. The last one was called Soldar. All the same though. 👍🏼
I just found you on UA-cam. I am enjoying your videos and find them vert helpful! Thanks 😊
@@jeannem413 pleased you found me, thank you.
The best assistant a man could ask for!
@samplum4150 yes mate. For sure. 👍🏼
Hi Ydna. Just watched this through again, and it looks like the small piece of solder is sandwiched between the metal inside the join. Am I seeing that right? If so, lm really interested in this approach, as know most jewellers and books tell you to put the solder under the join or on the join and heat it, which is what I do. However, one jeweller I know recommended I always put the solder in the join as you get a better solder join. I’ve not tried it, but really interested in your thoughts. Thanks again. Phill
That's the question I had too... Thanks for asking!
@phillbearman359 both ways work perfectly. You'll see me do it in many styles, but I do like to rolling mill down the solder like H has done here, so it's really thin and just about squeeze in. All ways are fine as long as the solder is the opposite the heat source it will flow through the gap. Another good reason to do this is that the solder piece won't pop or fly off into the abyss 😂. If anyone else reading doesn't have a rolling mill, you can hammer solder on steel flat plate or anvil to make thinner.
@@metalofhonour Thanks very much for the advice. I can definitely see the benefits and will give it a go next time. I’m guessing that method probably works well on thick rings. I’ve made a few 7 - 8mm wide and 3mm thick rings in the past, and can see putting a piece of solder in the join would probably help here. Thanks again. And H did a great job - cracking ring!
@@phillbearman359 yeah, works for everything. H always does a good job. I'll probably get her to do more stuff on the channel as I go.
