Time to make a small change, as plants in the garden borders mature it pays to re evaluate.

As we move into Autumn it pays to walk through the borders, things change rapidly, plants that looked good last month may not be working so good now, my garden is in a constant stage of renewal. keeping it right is easy to do and change in any form is the way to keep your garden looking good. I've already had to move plants to make the border look better, left to themselves the plants will run ...

Hi Richard from West Cornwall, garden is looking great 😊
Hello there! And thanks
I just love your garden and always enjoy the tours and talks. It looks great as usual.
Thank you lisa
❤❤❤привет от канала ДАЧНИКИ с Германии 😊🎉❤
Hello and thank you
I'm American but I've been living in Europe for over a decade. I lived in Germany for many years and now I live in Switzerland.
Wow that's great,
@@upatgrassybottom9859 I was only saying that in answer to your question at the end of the video by the way, not just so! lol. And don't ask me about the grasses of those countries, unfortunately I have no idea about grasses.
I won't ask about grasses😅@@brocktoon8
Hello from America. Beautiful garden. I love ornamental grasses. I too have ornamental grasses all over my garden also.
Hello, yes, ornamental grasses are great. Do you grow miscanthus?
@ Yes I do but, I don’t remember the varieties of hand. I grow them all in large containers so I can move them around my garden.
They do well in pots
Loved this video- I’d already earmarked buying Goldtau for next year, but hadn’t really come across a video showing how it looked in situ. It’s fabulous- and exactly what I’m after Thank you for this, and the excellent care advice I’m certainly giving them a go! Gonna buy a couple and see how I go - hopefully they’ll like my Brum garden! 😄
It's my favourite Deschampsia, it'll do well in brum.
I'm jealous that you can enjoy the autumn colors in your garden. A lot of snow is coming soon where I live so I have to cut most of the plants in my garden.
Wouldn't it be better to leave them to help protect the plant and cut down in spring
Thank you for your suggestion. Some plants are cut in the spring, but I cut tall plants before the snow falls because they will break and be crushed under the weight of the snow. Also, once the snow piles up it protects the plants from the cold.
@つぴつぴ-x3g what country are you in?
I live in Sapporo, in the north of Japan. I recently got into grasses and started watching your channel.
@つぴつぴ-x3g your country has superb grasses, I'm pleased you like grasses now.
❤❤❤здравствуйте 😊🎉 Привет от канала ДАЧНИКИ с Германии 😊🎉❤ Очень красиво у вас 😊 СУПЕР 🎉
Thank you
Are euphoria beneficial to bees and hummingbirds ?
I'm in the UK so I can't answer the hummingbird one, but yes to bees and flies etc.
Took some 3 inch cuttings in coco coir from a plant growing from under my neighbours fence. Hopefully they take and I can plant them out this spring.
Is the coir washed in ordinary water, not salt water, as some coir is
how do u keep the beds free of weeds? i keep getting dandelions and all sorts of other weeds growing on my flowerbeds all the time.
I have to tolerate some weeds , regular hoeing helps as does planting heavily, which helps to keep them down. I used to be obsessive about removing them, but I now don't let them run my garden life. Mulching your borders helps, but it is not a cheap option.
It’s a lovely garden. Lots of ornamental grasses. I really like ornamental grasses. I have them all over my yard.
Yes, I'm a massive ornamental grass fan
GLORIOUS!!!
Thanks
What a beautiful ginger cat!
He really is a looker. He uses it to his advantage, too. 😄
It’s good that you mention the name of the plants often throughout the year, helps us get to know them thoroughly in each season.
I feel that if I repeat them, it makes it easier for those who are interested in getting one
What is the rose with all the great orangish hips? Thank you!
Ironically, I never mentioned the rose name. It's called Rosa 'Starlight Symphony', and a bonus is it's practically disease free.
@@upatgrassybottom9859 thanks, I’ll look for it, I really like rose hips, orange, doesn’t matter. I think your garden looks great this season!
@YarrowPressburg try online at david Austin roses, they may have it.
Gorgeous flowers 💐 Like 51 My friend thank you for good sharing. Have a good relationship
Thanks
It does not look at all shady where you have it
It takes most of the sites , I think the point I'm making is it'll take shade,
Your garden always amazes me . Beautiful
Thank you, hard work, but it's beginning to pay off.
very nice! lots of room for more Acers 😬😍
Always
❤❤❤привет от канала ДАЧНИКИ с Германии 😊❤❤❤ 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🤝🤝🤝
Not sure what that says , but thanks 😀
You have a stunning collection of ornamental grasses and you are very knowledgeable about the varieties. I don’t have many areas in sun, I garden mostly in shade but anywhere I can I’m going to add some of the varieties you have.
Give it a go , although some grasses are listed as sun they often take shade, Hackonechloa macra take shade as does calamagrostis brachytricha.
Thank you so much for your videos. As you asked for comments: please recommend companion plants when you feel so. Thank you again
I'll try remember to include companion planting, I have done a couple of videos recommending companion plants, but I can't remember which videos, I've done a few!
Stunning garden fantastic early autumn colours
Thank you
I really like your bird house at the end of the video. Did you build it?
Yes, I did build it, I used old reclaimed pine, and the finial was found on an old post that was abandoned, I've made a few over the years but this was a challenge as it was fairly complex.
@@upatgrassybottom9859 You did a great job. It looks amazing. I'm looking to build a similar one.
That's great. I hope it goes well @sonjag.1511
Thank you, very enjoyable and informative. I like the way each plant has room to breathe and be appreciated and not crowded in. I also like you have so many view points and structure. Please could you give more names as you go round. Could you now and again say what aspect and soil type they like too. Again thank you, always enjoy your walk rounds.
I'll do my best to accommodate your request
@@upatgrassybottom9859 thank you. I have learnt a lot from following your videos and some of my prejudices to certain plants have been eradicated. 😊
Sounds interesting @@helenyoung8012
Beautiful garden. Excellent structure.
Thanks
That's not giganteus.
Are you referring to miscanthus, jubilaris?
@@upatgrassybottom9859 giganteus
Lovely garden. Just curious what zone you live in the UK? Seems you like to collect more dry loving plants. Here in my zone 7, I grow little bit of everything🪴
I think it's zone 6 to 9, I grow plants for different soil requirements, and the ones for dry are in the gravel garden as its south facing all day
Glorious captivating gardens, your own personal taste is unique and very pleasing! Just a quick question, what do you consider the best of the earlier flowering miscanthus? BTW, you do give very good commentary! :)
Thank you for your kind words, with regards to the best early miscanthus. For me, it's definitely miscanthus samurai , it has a great leaf colour, which comes in early and is the first to send up its seed heads, it's relatively short making around 3 feet at best.
@@upatgrassybottom9859 'Samurai' is ideal perfect what I'm looking for! I saw the Andropogon in your video, there's a new one called 'Karl's Cousin' ... Hoffman Nursery shows two photos upon their website, I'm eager to obtain this new selection when made available!
@TRguy64 just checked it out, it looks great.
Are you the author of "A Garden for all Seasons" by any chance? Your garden is so nicely picked and combined! Everything works together as pieces of a puzzle.
I had to look up the mentioned book, I can say it's not me that wrote it, my garden is a culmination of previous gardens I've made, and my love of gardens and design in general , I just love what I do, I don't garden as a job , it's my hobby but a hobby I wouldn't be without.
Love, love, love your garden! I would definitely come to visit one day, but now live in USA. Thank you for your podcast. All the best, Nelly
Thanks Nelly, maybe one day you'll visit.
You've always said it...grasses are what your garden is all about. This season shows them off beautifully.
It's a great time for my garden, I'm already planning to add more grasses
Dare I say it . . . ? I think your garden is at its best in Autumn!
Yes, it really is at its best
Great gresses . Have you seen polish grasses like Lady U or Lady in RED - I can tell you would LOVE them :)
I've not seen those two, but I've seen some great Polish grasses on line, I'm not sure if miscanthus fire dragon is Polish, but I have miscanthus megadot which I believe is Polish
Voles (not moles) eat roots of my ornamental grass so I have to plant it in pots or wire mesh bags, Your grasses look amazing!
I don't think I've ever suffered attacks from voles. Are you in a cold country?
Wont work in canada
Probably not
Thanks for your beautiful tour, I enjoyed them so much! Always been a fan of the grasses, moved to a wet cooler climate three years ago after living in the desert southwest for 30yrs now I have to learn what grasses do well here. Thanks again your garden is inspiring!
There will be plenty of grasses that suit your climate, but yes, you'll need to try a few out as you may have a micro climate to deal with.
Tfs! Got two Euphorbia Tobias yesterday from B&Q, while reporting today instinctively I put on gloves only to see the white sap turn almost neon blue?! 😅😅😅 phew
Yes, it can appear like that. Always wear gloves , I only wear them when cutting back the spent flowers, but it's good practice to wear them always.
I have had a problem with something eating (? slugs) my Astrantia Hadspun Blood - any ideas what could be causing the damage ?
It's likely to be slugs or snails. My own plants suffer too, but they usually grow away after a month or so, making them less tasty. They prefer to go for new growth.
Lietus nuostabiame sode😊👍

Thanks for the video. Mine is only half this height. Hoping for better growth in the coming years.
It can often take a couple of years for it to settle in, give it a nitrogen feed in spring once new growth starts. Which one do you have?
@@upatgrassybottom9859 Thanks I will do ! I have a few varieties, but think the mistake that I made with the giganteus is that I split it up early this year and didn't plant until May. I Need to leave it in the groundfor next year to get the height increase i believe.
I stay in Cape Town and this is now one of my favourite plants, mine are so beautiful at the moment, full in flower
That's great, I'd love to see the gardens over there.
Great grass to grow.
It certainly is
First time seeing your garden and it is absolutly beautiful! Totally my style, but hard to find, most people on YT have nice Gardens but not my style, lots of annuals and stuff. Yours is stunning!❤
@RedCoin91 thanks, I hope you enjoy future videos.
@@upatgrassybottom9859 I'm going to binch watch your videos. May In ask what soil type you have? and PH? In which zone do you garden? Sorry, lots of questions.
@RedCoin91 I'm in the uk , I garden on a chalk base, but it has a good moisture, retentive soil, with clay in one part, I never test pH as most plants we can get hold of are good for us.
@@upatgrassybottom9859 Thank you 😉
@@RedCoin91 you're welcome
This is beautiful. The garden looks huge. Is it?
It's bigger than the average garden, but quite manageable.
