“Twice Thrown” The design of the Double Wall Bowl calls, for it to be thrown Inverted (Upside down). The plane of the wheel head determining the placement of the shoulder. Creating what I term the “Wheel Head Design Horizon”. I have overcome this by leaving a mass of clay captured by the inverted Inner Bowl to be later thrown once the vessel is cut off. how much clay are you using here?
Sorry for the late reply about 7.5 lbs
I don't get what this is.
Hi Laura Sorry for the late response I designed the Multi center batt, to allow me to begin exploring what opportunities can be found by throwing on different centers on the same piece. The video was my first go by giving the inner bowl a differnet center than the outer walls of a double wall bowl. Have a great holiday jaimeSeason
Hey Jaime, congratulations on your excellent work. I have been thinking a long time about the possibility of dual or multiple centres on the wheel, and this is amazing. Is possible to purchase the doble axis batt system? I am excited to try this kinds of possibilities and keep growing on my sculptural work. I’m looking forward to your response Joseph
Joseph Thank You, I engineered and built the multicenter bat, from two wooden batts and a 10" C clamp. Unfortunately, do to unavoidable life events (taking care of two 96 year old Inlaws and a 92 and 87 year old parents, just for starters). I have not been able to get back to creating/continuing this line of exploration. But hope to get back to clay this winter. If you want a simpler approach and can predetermine the distance of the desired centers you could simply approach it by attaching 2 pins to one batt on the wheel head, corresponding row of holes on a second upper batt. If people would like. I could create a video showing the internal workings of this batt design. And a tutorial on the Pin idea. Jaime
Jaime Thanks for your kind response. I hope the life events will developed in the best way possible and that all of your relatives count with good health. Also I hope that you can return with no problema to your work and this line of exploration in the winter. I don’t get entirely the idea of the two batts with the corresponding pins and holes, so the tutorial regarding the pin hole idea will be grate. Regarding the design of the multi center batt a tutorial on the internal working would be wonderful. Furthermore, if you can send me some sketches or blueprints on the design of the double axial batt system I will be more than grateful. In case this is posible if you can send my that information in some way that will be great. Thanks for all the information and valuable inputs on clay investigation.
I will work on that. Can't promise how soon. But it will be my next video. @@rodriguezchoche
How much clay was that? Thanks.
Hi Foyforhand Sorry for taking so long to answer. I used about 6.5 to 7 lb of clay. Jaime
@@BeyondtheClayWall Thanks. After I asked, I had seen you answer on a different video that you used about 5 lbs. So that’s what I tried.
very cool @@foyforehand5057 how did it work out?
@@BeyondtheClayWall Ok. Honestly, this is probably a bit beyond my current skill level. but, your videos were just too cool not to try. I tried to reinforce the bowl/wall seem when it was still too wet and completely lost the bottom of the bowl. So, threw another inverted bowl, put it in the hole and saved it. It's been trimmed and is slow drying. We'll see if it survives bisque.
Excellent!! There are a few videos where my plans go awry. It is in stumbling and creatively responding that I learn the most and open up ideas, directions of exploration. Kudos keep pushing yourself, you are on the right track. Jaime

These are amazing and even when I’m watching you I don’t quite understand what you’re doing, but it turns out so awesome. In the videos it looks like you throw them and then immediately trim them. How long do you wait between when you throw them and when you’re trimming them?
Julianne Thanks so much! I am considering a format that will hopefully explain the thinking and theory behind my process. Stay tuned😊 So much of clay work is water management. When executing a twice thrown piece a balance must be reached between the outer clay and the inner clay. The primary throw is set aside until the exposed clay is in a medium to late leather hard state. I need to be able to cut off the piece with minimal deflection but at the same time, where the inner newly exposed clay caches are still plastic. To arrive at this state, drying depends on the overall humidity in the environment and the complexity of the exposed piece. This also can be managed be covering the piece or sections of the piece to arrive at the optimum state. This can take 1-3 days depending on many factors. There have been occasions where I have cut off the primary throw and need to set aside for further drying. Or when I want to cut off the piece from a nonabsorbent batt to place on an absorbent batt. There are time where I will trim (true) the outer edge to better recenter the piece. When I twice throw there are section that I can trim and sections that I can throw. In this stage the final piece (profile) is executed. On many pieces that is it. On few Occasions I will trim and alter piece. Jaime Salles
Damn! I hope you take this in a nice way. You are one crazy guy!!! Im inspired!
Dana, Great and Thanks! YES I'm one crazy guy! Jaime
@@BeyondtheClayWall You're very welcome. Im right there with you on the crazy. 😊 Thank you for the inspiration. Im not inspired to do what you do. Im inspired by your tenacity to do more of what my creative soul wants to do. Thats true inspiration. Im doing flameware clay body experiments. The two companies who manufactured flameware clay are no longer making it because of the price of minerals with lithium in the used to make the body low thermal expansion. I was just about ready to market my cookware when I found this out.
Dana How frustrating, forgive me if I’m overstepping, with some brainstorming. Which clay bodies/ Manufacturers where you using? Some will do a run of any clay formulary on a minimum volume (1ton). I know Tucker in Canada would. You may be able to find other ceramicist in need of it and split the cost of the run. I know of a ceramist in mid-west that does renaissance style flame ware that mixes her own clays. Wonderful work you make

beautiful shape 👌 thank you for sharing with us 😊
RelaX My Pleasure Thank You Jaime Salles
have any tips for centering bigger pieces on the wheel, tried 5lbs my last class and whoooooooo boy i was not ready
Alex Glad to hear from you! It’s great that you are pushing yourself don’t let it get you down. It is hard to directly answer your question without seeing you at the wheel. The big difference as you go forward into larger work is to focus on throwing with your whole body. Lock your legs around the wheelbase as if you are riding a horse. This will let your hips feel a stable secure point in space. Use your back shoulder and arms which are stronger than your hands and fingers. Always lean on the wheel pan with your arms and triangulate them to the center of the wheel. Conceptually don’t think of it as centering all the clay rather use your dominant hand to evenly drive up the side of the mass moving the out of center clay to the top and then the center the top. Watch this video a talk thru some of the points. Take notice of my body posture, and arm hand triangulation. ua-cam.com/video/I_C2wOvgMhc/v-deo.html Life has kept me very busy dealing with the unavoidable. I will try to make it a point to do a more basic tutorial on centering. Best Jaime Salles
I guess I just don't get what this type of vessel would be used for. Can anyone explain?
Thanks for your question. I will reply to both in your second comment. Jaime
What would be the point of this type of vessel? To have an air pocket inside it? Wouldn't that weaken the structure? Genuinely trying to understand. Maybe it went too fast for me to grasp what it is supposed to be.
Laura Those are great questions and observations. Thanks for them, I will reply to both here. What Type of vessel and use: This video is one step in a journey of exploration and discover, of new approaches and techniques, on the wheel. It’s function and form were secondary. Its present iteration would possibly fall into the category of a Chip Dip bowl. “Wouldn't that weaken the structure?” Double wall structures are much stronger. Their strength increasing as the separation or cross section increases in distance. “What would be the point of this type of vessel? To have an air pocket inside it?” By being hollow you gain in strength without the added weight of a solid. Another aspect is the insulative properties of an air pocket. From a Functional Perspective: Using these properties, one might explore this technique, in addressing the need of serving a piping hot food next to an ice-cold food in one vessel. Please feel free to comment and ask as many questions as you like. Jaime

I threw my first double-walled bowl yesterday after watching your non-narrated video, and it went perfectly! I’m glad I watched this one too, especially for the tip on drying as thrown, once taken off the bat, so the top stays level (I’ll flip it back tonight, fingers crossed). Thank you!

Judi Thank you for your support!
Do the multiple walls serve a specific purpose? Other than looking super cool! 😄
Hi Odette Thanks! They make the journey to that final form possible.
@@BeyondtheClayWall The potter forms the clay for its ultimate purpose. The clay does not dictate what it is going to be. Through the potter only, the clay gains its worth. Jamie, your response is perfect!
I love this piece. I plan to attempt to do this "challenge". my only question is how much clay did you start with in making this project?
Thanks Jeffrey, I'm excited! I used a 14" plastic batt , with around 7.5 lb clay. I would suggest 8lb. I always find when exploring more, leaves you options and you can always trim a wall shorter. The Final piece dimensions are (Measured on piece fired to 06 Bisques) 12 3/4'' Outer Diam | 5" Inner Bowl Diam | 3 5/8 Height | 8 1/2" Foot Ring Diam Please wrap around tell me how it goes or if you have any other questions. Jaime

What an impressive piece! Gorgeous! I am curious though, sometimes I get cracks on the top lip, outside wall. I throw thinner and with porcelain. Have you had any issues with the top and the outer wall, where they join, cracking?
Denise Thanx 1) When I throw the shoulder, I always compress the clay flat against the wheel head with a Rib. If the shoulder clay is less compressed it will shrink more than the walls. 2) Drying could be an Issue, the outer wall will dry faster than the inner Bowl. I normally just drape plastic sheet over a piece to help equalize evaporation. 3) If your batt is absorbent the shoulder and wall bases will dry quicker, plastic sheet helps here as well. But you should cut it off the batt as soon as you can to avoid an uneven adhesion to the batt. Then set it flat on the shoulder on an absorbent surface and cover it. Do not set it up right to dry the weight of inner Bowl will deflect the shoulder downward. 4) Porcelain Are you working cone 10 or cone 6? Porcelain being a primary clay (deposits mined in close proximity to its host parent rock). Suffer from poor particle size distribution. Which in turn imparts poor plasticity. Historically the Chinese addressed this problem by throwing a blanks 2 to 3 times the intended thickness and trimming a very dry leather hard blank to final form. You can see an example of that here: Jingdezhen, China - Trimming Porcelain Pieces ua-cam.com/video/o10UBL6oaIQ/v-deo.html Cone 10 Porcelain almost exclusively uses Calcium as it’s body flux. Cone 6 Porcelain is a modern hybrid. Very dependent on its Manufacturer. If your comfortable with your current clay, it’s firing and glaze expression. I would first look at your drying routine. If you feel it’s the clay find a thickness compromise, and embrace the path taken by Chinese Master. Hope this helps Jaime
Great save! Outstanding form. Sounds like you might be using sculptors clay?
Denise Thanx, Most of the videos are the first or second time I try a new approach so there are a few of those, near misses or pivots . Yes, the clay I use is comprised of several ^6 stoneware Tucker Clay bodies, 2/3 of which contain grog. Most of my work is sculpture in nature. It is posted on my Instagram account . The link is in the lower right of the Channel Header. Jaime

Can you share these beauties with us please? thanks for sharing your talent and knowledge with us all.
Denise I share your love of exploration. Thank you for your kind words! The inverted approach of the Multi Wall Bowl / Vessel opens the door to a world of new techniques and approaches that I only recently have begun to explore. I’ve also tasked myself to also explore a glaze palette that is less travelled in the ^06 cone range. I will be posting some of those glaze test under the “Community” Tab of the Channel. Look forward to incorporating the glazed pieces in future videos. If you have any questions, about any of my videos or techniques I welcome all questions, comments. Jaime
