The Allegheny Woodrat Release
The Allegheny woodrat, also known as “packrat” or “rock rat”, is only found in the Northeastern corner of the state. These mammals are native to the Appalachian Mountains and Interior Highlands and have historically been found from New York to Alabama. They are now listed as extirpated, endangered, species of concern or vulnerable across most of that range. They pose no threat to humans, require rocky habitat, and have a diet of plants and fungi. The next closest woodrat population is over 150 miles away in Pennsylvania, so this population is very isolated.
NJDEP Fish & Wildlife’s Endangered and Nongame Species Program staff set out this summer to release two woodrats from Virginia into the only known area in New Jersey where Allegheny woodrats still exist. This effort was made to help boost the population and was made possible by the collaboration of a regional woodrat working group: www.nationalgeographic.com/animals/article/allegheny-wild-rat-is-mysteriously-disappearing
Read about a previous “genetic rescue” effort with woodrats from Pennsylvania that was very successful for this NJ population: dep.nj.gov/wp-content/uploads/njfw/allegheny-woodrat-population.pdf

Did you know the peregrine falcon is the planet’s fastest bird? When hunting, they can attain dive speeds over 200 M.P.H.! They typically live on cliff sites and tall man-made structures like bridges and buildings. The peregrine falcon is an endangered species in New Jersey. They were extirpated east of the Mississippi River by the 1960s because of the pesticide DDT. During the 1970s and ‘80s, ...

Did you know that NJ Fish & Wildlife’s Endangered and Nongame Species Program (ENSP) has a wildlife detection dog on its team? Fly, a cattle dog mix originally from Wyoming, has been with the ENSP for the past four years helping biologists study rare and elusive species. Specifically, she finds them (Eastern box turtles and Wood turtles) or their scat (in the case of Bobcats), and alerts her ha...

Barn Owls are a widespread species, but their populations are declining in parts of their range, including New Jersey. The NJ Coastal Barn Owl Project began in 2021 as a collaborative effort between Conservation Science Global, Natural Lands, NJDEP Fish & Wildlife, and the Conserve Wildlife Foundation of New Jersey to provide nesting sites for Barn Owls in our coastal marshes. I grew up in NJ, and the wildlife is beautiful out there. When my Dad was a kid, he told me there were box turtles almost everywhere. Now they’re rare to see due to land development and new roads. I was lucky to see a few during my teenage years when helping them safely cross the street. You never know what type of wild creatures you’ll see or help when you’re outdoors.
