Dick Plotz and Robert Foster chat from Tolkien Reading Day 2022

On March 25th, 2022, we had a wonderful day of celebrating Tolkien's books and those who love them. One of the highlights of our event on that day was having Richard (Dick) Plotz and Robert Foster join us for almost half an hour. Their friendship,and their mutual love of Tolkien, was almost 60 years long. Sadly, Dick passed away earlier this week, and we are all saddened at this loss. Here we a...

    The West needs to teach Beowulf more. It should be as known and influential on our upcoming generations as all other myth and religious documents. I want my kid to study Semitic, Greco-Roman, Norse and Old English myths.. then add Egyptian, South American, East Asian.. etc. But Beowulf must be a priority. I would say equal to or right after the Torah and New Testament.

      They are plentiful still (huge print run), but finding a copy in fine condition can still be a fun challenge. I'd say in the $10-20 range is still doable. -Urulókë

    I got here from tom's chanel and saw the post with the question if books are a good investment. In my opinion; Short answer yes. Long answer no. Because the books that are, are getting harder and harder to find and often or mostly are way out of people's price range. I was in a archive run by volunteers and they had a book from 1636 listing stores in that city. It was in Dutch. And cost € 300. And a similair book for way less but it had mold in it. I was tempted but what market is there for a book about shops in a language not a lot speak. Big investment with a limited market for interested buyers.

    • @TolkienGuide
      @TolkienGuide 5 місяців тому

      That 1636 dutch book is a great example of something that has had huge ups and downs in value over time - it was probably very useful when it came out, then it was out of date, then it was collectible and/or a good source for research, and now the contents are public domain (and if google or the internet archive haven't scanned it already, someone will eventually) and it's back to just a physical object that likely few people have any attachment to.

    These Remington works were my introduction to Tolkien way back when--These covers, along with W. Carlos' Switched-on-Bach synthesizer music have colored my impression of the entire story ever since. I see it as an impressionistic/surreal/psychodelic feast of dark-sharp colorful angles of danger and a return to home--somewhat scoured. It is mystery and a journey to the unknowable, and unfortunately the more recent covers kinda remove the mystical bits of mystery. I still must be listening to Carlos' synthesizer improv of the 2nd movement of Brandenburg No. 3 in G major when reading the chapter on Shelob. (from the original LP, not the later release).

    I have to agree that the quality of Folio's new LOTR LE set seems right but I'm underwhelmed with the design choices and look/aesthetics. Although it may have become cliche (for good reason), I associate Tolkien, esp,. The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, with an earthier and more organic style/design and feel; lots of various browns, dark reds, forest greens, blacks. Red & blue as the primary color motif doesn't feel or look right to me. I do like Alan Lee's artwork and it fits with my imaginings, but only inside the books, not on the covers. At this price level the books should be completely leather bound, not quarter. I'd like to see the trilogy designed in the manner of ancient tomes in embossed brown leather with Smyth-sewn bindings. And like the standard Folio Tolkien series (which I have and enjoy), matching bindings and design of The Hobbit and Silmarillion, with all books in slipcases per usual (can't really store a trilogy in a clamshell or Solander box). Perhaps have the LOTR trilogy in dark brown leather (with embossed runes and sigils), The Hobbit in forest green leather, and the Silmarillion in a dark red or burgundy leather. And then perhaps different shades of brown for Unfinished Tales, black for the separate book of maps, etc. Don't over-design the books, either; keep things clean and simple. No writing along the edges or overdoing the graphics, etc. Promote the gravitas and mystery of the books.

    I had to have these.. I missed the initial offering and I saw they're selling for north of $4000... upwards of $5000... I managed to find a set in fine condition at a local independent used book store that apparently was out of touch with the outside market prices ... he was happy to part with them for $1900! I couldn't pull out my credit card fast enough. As for the price, it's going to be high... the amount of work that goes into this, and the fact that they can only sell 1000... the gross proceeds are 1,000,000 pounds, but the net after all expenses is likely 10% of that.. For example the Harper Colins version is likely printed and bound in China where costs are a fraction of what they are run the UK. Keeping it real.
