You go where your eyes go.
I drive slow cars fast. I run track days, autocross, and time trials generally in a Honda CRX or Mazda Miata. I'm trying to get better and have fun… maybe sometime I’ll go racing.

Still chasing my PB from last year :shakes-fists: time to go to the garage and upgrade more parts, right? Good day instructing and driving with CSCC!
TNIA best lap

Advanced Group at Track Night in America Got held back a bit through T10-12. It's tricky to balance traffic with faster cars that brake so much sooner. Braking zones and corners are where this car gains time.

Got a new PB by .070s, on the lap where I popped out of gear into T1. 1:36.53 Now that I'm more used to the wing, I'm pushing the car harder and feeling the increased understeer at speed. Time for a front splitter? Honda CRX ZC motor ~110hp Hankook RS4 Portland International Raceway
First time at the Ridge Motorsports Park

My first time at the Ridge. This is a seriously awesome track, I had a lot of fun with the elevation changes. I have *lots* to learn and improve on here, but these were my two best consecutive laps: 2:06.51, 2:06.64. I prepared by watching other folks' on-board videos, including: @mikereed1231, @karltaht2370 (great walkthrough!), and @AHS_motorsport. I also put in some laps in RFactor2, to memo...

Took a friend out for zooms over lunch during an instructor day. Not my best lap time, but we had fun and maniacal laughter.
Autocross in a Ford Transit Van

I think Sabine Schmitz would be proud. Driver: Valerie Bradley (Palatov builder/driver, instructor, general driving badass) If anyone says their car isn't modified enough for doing autocross... just show them this?

Knocked out a new PB, almost a second faster than my last one! Sorry about the visor blocking some of the video, will figure out a better setup next time. 1:36.60 Portland International Raceway (chicane layout) SCCA Track Night in America Honda CRX Hankook RS4 tires ~110HP ZC motor Something that helped me: I listened to one of Ross Bentley's talks about braking zones. PIR non-chicane April 2023 - CRX 1:31.015

First PIR laps of the year! A busy day as I was both instructing and running laps with the advanced group. Couldn't quite beat my PB on the non-chicane layout sadly. If I had a few more laps, maybe I could've worked up more speed through 7 and 10. I started the day with a more aggressive rear wing setting leftover from ORP. Dialing it back helped keep my top speed identical (to the tenth of a m...

Awesome work! You look so relaxed on both of these laps.
@@notbenh thanks! I consciously try to remember to breathe and stay loose. It’s a forever practice.
🎉👏👏🏆👏👏🎉 Awesome work!
Nice run, very composed
Awesome run, really making those tires work!
Thanks! Might be time to start playing with a front splitter or adjusting the rear sway bar. Understeer was more of a challenge at this track.
c n'est pas le même angle de vue tu triche
oui, c'est vrai
Who cares? It's a van, not a race car!
It wants to be a race car so bad
...drive everything, right? EPIC!!!
Definitely agree on your braking comment. I used to brake really early off the back straight and go through 10/11 slower than I needed. What used to be one hard braking at 10 has now become a much shorter brake to bleed off a tiny bit of speed at 10 and a second short brake near the hot pit exit road to setup for 12. Also changing my entry angle and braking through 1/2 has picked up a little time there as well.
Sounds like you’re making awesome improvements! The entry to the chicane is a fascinating area of the track - one of my favorite spots to spectate. I believe Ross said that he thinks T10 is the most underdriven corner at PIR, and that’s probably accurate. Every time I drive it, I feel there’s more potential.
What's interesting is to go sit at 10 when a bunch of different classes of cars are racing. I occasionally work flags & comm during races and was stationed at 10 during Nascar. Interesting weekend as Friday was the Arca (junior Nascar drivers) and a Spec Miata Race. Sat was Spec Miata and the Nascar Xfinity folks. Most all of them tend to completely cut the curb on the left and drive through dirt (wouldn't recommend that on a street car) About 4-5 of the Spec Miata lead drivers would enter into 10 side by side and pound through 10,11,12 in that same position (sometimes one of them would end up in the tire wall at 12). Most of the other drivers would setup for 10 side by side but one of them would hard brake and give up the line. Its pretty easy to see a small puff of smoke when the miatas brake and i feel like pretty consistently Im not seeing that at all until about the 100ft marker. The Arca and Xfinity drivers were easily carrying 30-40mph+ over what I would normally even consider. They also had many offs in the grass at 11 because of carrying too much speed (and or getting tapped by another driver). Similar problem with them at 4. The chicane was a constant source of contact with the Xfinity folks given they kept trying to squeeze way too many cars through there at a time. ;) I would totally recommend sitting back there on the hill during Rose Cup, Indy, OR any of the Cascade events.
@@matthewcastor1298 love it, thanks for sharing the notes. Working flags and comms sure gives you some incredible views. I honestly never get sick of watching and analyzing other drivers out on track, I oughta spend more time at T10. The more you look, the more there is to learn. See ya out there!
Making those tires work!
Just gettin' my money's worth
!! Woo !! indeed
Nice run, super smooth
Thanks! I definitely could’ve used the kerbs more, and been braver through 4 and 9.
@@trackcrx there's always room for improvement but you got out there and made it happen
floppy cowl, best cowl. Congrats on getting everything dialed in just when it mattered most 🏁
Floppy cowl creates dirty air for following karts, right? Is that how aero works? 😅
great run! the giggles are a great touch.
An essential part of the experience 🤌
Nice dodge on that last cone, I thought it was a gonner for sure.
Luckily it jumped out of the way just in time
Great catch in T6! Thanks for bringing us along for the ride.
Accidentally engaged drift mode for a hot minute
Nice run!
nicely done!
