Haunted House Pumpkin Ale - Grain to Glass Brew Day
Personally, i think washing that yeast is overkill. That trub is dead yeast, but also strong (stronger than before) bilions of alive yeast, alive yeast uses dead yeast as a nutrients, so in europe we always just take that trub, and we make really strong beer using that, or sometimes if we make lighter beer, we just add few spoons to wort, It pretty much always start with no trouble.
Yep, I usually reuse the whole trub as well. I wanted to show the washing portion for those that want to use it for a very different beer style
@@CityscapeBrewing 1 thing i see people not talking about in US made beer videos, is that they do not talk about yeast being stronger, after they fermented something, and its not accually the same as starter. Sadly i see most of videos talking about trub, as mostly useless mess, than big big colony of way more stronger yeast strain.
@dodobird4155 agreed
Nice !!!
Thank you! Cheers!
This is a great video. Thank you!
Thanks for creating this video. I started a thread on BeerAdvocate which includes an embed of your video. Hopefully this will increase hits. Na Zdravi
Thanks man!! 🍻
Very interesting they open top ferment, quite crazy what you said about us home brewers wanting to keep everything sealed and contained when they ferment like that. Great Video
Yeah this was common a long time ago but not as common today... It is really neat to see that in person and it surprised me a lot.
That trip seems like it was a lot of fun. Great video
This was definitely a highlight! Awesome place to visit! 🍻
You know you're watching a real red-blooded American when he says, "just a couple drops" and proceeds to put at least a dozen in there. Enjoyed this one a lot, thanks!
😂
Sorry I missed it Dennis. Busy time of year for me. Congrats to all !
i can never catch it in the videol haha but for the escorbic acid do you add it in the main mash or... i rewatched the video again and i seen the escorbic acid addition. i guess lagering a beer for so long its a good idea.
I add 4 g of ascorbic acid in the mash, after stirring in the grains, for most beers. It helps preservation and prevents oxidation. Does it matter if it's a lager or ale, but very important for a certain styles like hazy IPAs and West Coast IPAs that are very hoppy.
@@CityscapeBrewing ok thank you. ill remember that. and yes i know about the hoppy ipa. ive done a few and more then enough times they get oxidized and brown. once i made an ipa and when it was time to drink i opened it up just to smell dead rotting fruit smell it was bad!!
well im off soon to making another pilsner. the long journey of waiting ive got some extras stashed in the freezer i need to use. weyermann pilsner malt and weyermann floor malted and a dash and a half of that. using magnum, hallertau, and spalt. never used spalt before so here goes nothing! also 34/70 the first time ever using it.
Love 34/70 yeast. It's a beast and does a great job. Sounds like a good recipe to me! Let me know how it turns out! 🍻
@@CityscapeBrewing will do! give me a few months hahah. my mexican lager i recently made will be ready friday.
Here are a few suggestions. I would used a large empty coffee can/ plastic type. And use a step drill , to drill out the hole. You may even drill out some of the holes in the screen if it's running a little slow for you. But over all you did a great job. Thanks for sharing. 😊
I have the spring in my faucet and all I get is foam with the spring in if I take the spring out, I don’t get any foam why?.
I am not sure... All I can think of is that you might not have it tightened down all the way because you only get foam when it's getting air or over pressured. I use about 10 ft of serving line in order to slow the beer down and prevent foam, but that is for any faucet, spring or not.
Your videos will help a lot of people thank you Btw. What you call vorloff is actually a German word and is Vorlauf meaning forerun. Chem: bei Destillation) forerun
I have a eleven gram package of dry Kveik, Lutra that I'd like to do a starter with as to get more yeast from. What's your thoughts on this? Thanks, Jim
Kveik Yeast is one that you don't need to worry about making a starter for as much. It actually likes being underpitched to give some more desirable flavors. Most yeast strains give negative or undesirable off flavors, but kveik Yeast is the exception. Some people even pitch low on purpose.
How about freezing?
I have not done that, but brulosophy did a video on that a while ago. I should try that soon.
Did you struggle with that gas one brew kettle? Mine arrived this week and I cannot fix a leak coming from the connections.
No I haven't had an issue. The important thing is to put the washers in the correct places, and use Teflon tape on the threads to stop any leaks. The white silicone washer on the inside of the kettle and red one on the outside.
@CityscapeBrewing Thanks for the quick response. I love your channel as I am brand new to home brewing. I wanted to give a quick update. My model came with a very short strand of Teflon tape so I definitely realize now that I did a very poor job of wrapping, probably only one time around and not covering it completely. Today I went to a hardware store and got more Teflon tape (99¢) and I gave it a much better job wrapping probably going around 6 times and fully covered. This completely fixed my leakage. In case anyone has the same issue.
@BigAl2918 awesome. Glad you got it fixed! 🍻🤘
If there already is a one-way check valve, do i still need the co2 captured ballon. When it Suck Back the valve will stop any fluid or oxygen coming through. No offend buddy i just want to stick with the cheapest gear. Cheers mate.
Good question but no, because when you take off the tubing, or go to transfer it, it will suck oxygen into the tank because of the reverse pressure. The bag keeps the pressure even.
Thank you great infomation. One more question that is i normally use blow-off tube and when bottling i dont take off the tube but fill it with a little sanitizer, allow a bit oxygen being suck in to let beer flow out the spigot (basic pressure stuff). So its my first time using these coldcrashguardian, would i remove this setup and connect the normal tubing when transfer?
@milkcoffee4124 yes you can but won't have the suck back, so minimum oxygen getting in with the quick change
You are a godsend and saved my beer!. The video was simple and easy to follow worked exactly as you said. Thank you 🤙🏽 from New Zealand 🇳🇿
Sweet! 👍 🍻
Have a question. I cold crash in the keg, it has always worked good for me . I have always hooked up the CO2 when cold crashing. Is the ok or should I wait till after CC to apply CO2.
That is totally fine just the way you do it.
Sounds to me like you need another keezer
Hate that I keep missing the lives. Brewed your base porter recipe from your vanilla porter. Delicious!
if you wanted to start a yeast bank, what starter size would you step up from here after your 1000ml has fermented through? Is there a specific formula or do you just rinse and repeat the 1000ml starter process to multiply more yeast?
If you have a large enough eldermeyer flask then you could ramp up to 2-3L from there. I haven't had a need to go larger for a 5 gallon batch, and I don't have any yeast stored, but I imagine a 2L starter would make about 8-10 Yeast banks you could use to make new starters in the future.
@ thank you!
Nope 👎
What’s Happening? Sorry about the turkey.
Looks like a helluva trip man! Now I want to go back!
It was awesome. We were talking about a new trip on the plane home! Haha. Can't wait to hear about yours too! 🍻👍
Nice trip, thanks for sharing. I'm from France no so far from Germany. I went to the same place as a neighboor. You should definitely go to Prague. And you can go to Nuremberg home of the Rotebier there's some nice visit of the brewing sewer's too.
Thanks and good advice! 🍻
Cool idea. But if you’re making content and telling people to spend any amount of money, you should test this yourself. Maybe next time, don’t just upload a video for the sake of needing to release a video. Instead, wait until you can ferment in your modded fermentation vessel/lid. Show the actual process during an actual fermentation, instead of just saying it’s gonna work. You already spent the money on the items just show how it actually works, instead of using 10 cents worth of popcorn. Not trying to be negative, you already did most of the work just follow through with it.
I have used this on several other videos now, so you can definitely check them out to see that it does in fact work, so long as you don't jam the whole thing full of hops. Using one or two oz works perfect, as intended. I appreciate the feedback, at the time I had three other beers fermenting, and didn't have plans to brew for over a month. I plan to do a second version of this in the future, but it's more or less intended to get people thinking about making homemade devices, rather than spending hundreds of dollars.
Awesome trip! I was there a week after you. Our honeymoon trip. We did munich, vienna, prague and berlin. Oktoberfest was amazing. I already want to be back (for the beer, of course)
Awesome! That sounds like an amazing trip as well! Prost! 🍻
Dude the UK - great beers in the UK !!!
That will likely be one of our next trips, with my son this time. He wants to see Big Ben lol.
@@CityscapeBrewing Bermondsey Mile is where you want to head - all the craft breweries - but get ready to spend some decent cash - London isn't cheap !
What an amazing tour you've done. I recently went to Prague and Berlin. If you enjoy big cities, I recommend Berlin. It's not as busy as Paris and you can have a lot of fun there. I've loved Prague. For what I saw about Pilsen, in your video, Prague is quite similar. Prost!
Great suggestion! Definitely on my next trip! 🤘🍻
I agree and highly recommend you head to Prague. It is an amazing city with amazing beers and food. Make sure to head to Green Devil for some absinthe as well when you are there. Super worth it.
Definitely going back! I think I'd love it. Thanks for the tip! I'll look into green devil
Wow, that looks like an epic beer trip. Great video.
It was awesome. Definitely going back!
Glad you had the opportunity to do that! Sounds like a lot of fun. Definitely on my bucket list!!! Did you come across any amber/dark German beers? What was your favorite beer in Brussels?
I did have an amber beer but not a dark lager.. wish I would have found one. In Brussels that would be hard to choose a favorite. Probably a Trappist dubbel.
Thanks!
Thanks! You rock! 🤘🍻
Fantastic video. We plan on going next year and this helps a lot. Thank you
Absolutely! Let me know if you have any questions! 🤘🍻
It is my dream to go to Prague and Pilsen one day. Dennis did you ever consider being a tour guide?
That would be fun! Definitely list to go back! 🍻
Nice video. But don't tell me that I missed the video where you talk about your Clawhammer Supply brewing system in the back. Cheers from Phoenix, AZ 🍻
You didn't. Plenty more videos coming in the future! 😉
@@CityscapeBrewing 😆 I thought I was drunk. Thx God. I run a 3 Vessel HERMS on Propane because butane is a bastard gas (Hank Hill) and I'm skeptical about ⚡️. But you never know.
@ELRORRITO1 I got you... The next few will be all about it And what to expect.
Very cool, Dennis. I'm jealous 😮
It was an amazing trip!! 👍🍻
Prost!
🤘🍻
Hey Dennis, thanks for the video. In your recipe description you have the SRM at 19.3. Can I assume you meant 9.3? 19.3 seems a bit dark for Sierra Pale Ale. Thanks
Yes... That was a typo. I will correct that now!
so before a yeast starter i have to drain the liquid off the top but use the sludge material in the bottom? ill be using cellar science german lager yeast from a batch i just did last week. im not sure how long the lager yeast will stay good for in the fridge i was planning to reuse it in december sometime
Yes, the trub is good for about 4 weeks, but you can also make a starter if it is longer than that.
@@CityscapeBrewing ok cool it will be my first time making one. so maybe like a 1,500 something starter
how many packets of yeast?
I used 1 packet of yeast. You can see that at the 4:20 minute mark in the video! 👍🍻
I've brewed around 10 batches but it has been a few years since I brewed. I recently bought a larger kettle, random that it is the exact same kettle you are using, and wanted to do a full boil to try and gain a better quality beer versus doing the 3.5 gallons like i've done before. Thank you for the informative video!
Nice! Good job! Let me know if you have any questions! 🍻
Nice! One of my favorite brews
Mine too! 🍻🤘
