Drilling Deeper episode 21 The Frasch Process
#DYK one of the problems that the early Canadian oil industry had to contend with smelly high sulfur oil. People referred to it as the "skunk oil" and really didn't want to burn it in their oil lamps. Hermann Frasch was hired by Imperial Oil to find a solution to the smell and by 1885 he discovered that if you add lead oxide or copper oxide to the distillation process you will get a less smelly Kerosene product. This was a major break through in the process of petroleum manufacture and distillation.

In many ways, the early oil drillers and their descendants used their faith supported by biblical scriptures to justify the industry and its profits. They truly felt that petroleum was a blessing and used the proceeds from oil to install these magnificent stained gla...

    It wasn't Howard Hughes Jnr who patented the drill bit, it was his father Howard Hughes senior. He patented it as soon as he invented it and then refused to sell a single one. Instead he leased them out for a fortune and thus retained full control. If someone was drilling for oil he'd know whether they'd paid his lease fee and if not, they were almost certainly breaching his patent by copying the design. As he put it: "This does not give me a monopoly of the oil drilling business, people can always use a pick and shovel."

      He was just a good business man. Hughes Jr. financed the building of his empire with that drill bit money. He took a wealthy family business and turned it into a massive empire that made him the richest man in the world until his death in the 70's. He was the first billionaire. Not bad for a kid who had big shoes to fill.

    I loved the old wells . We used to take care of an old oilfield in PA that was pumped by a central power. They had masts and granddad had a truck with the winch on it. We could pull up to the well, hang the snatch block on the mast and take the line over it and be pulling wells in about a half hour. Though I only seem to remember a very few times pulling wells on a nice day !!! Mostly seemed to be raining or snowing ??? I would not trade those days with my grandfather working on the wells or drilling with the National Machine for all the tea in China ! Today they would be arrested for child labor violations ! I absolutely loved each and every minute and he taught me so much more than a good work ethic ! He amassed a small fortune in the oil and gas business with an 8th grade education ! The most intelligent people I ever knew only went to 8th grade !

      You are correct. Jerker Lines were used in the past and continue to be used today to pump oil out of the shallow wells in Oil Springs. This technique for harvesting oil fit in with the overall theme of Oil Drilling Techniques when we made this original series several years ago.

    • @oilmuseumofcanada
      @oilmuseumofcanada 3 роки тому

      The gears are lubricated by a trough of oil at the bottom. With every rotation, the gears will self-lubricate by passing through the trough. Other friction points can be manually greased with a grease gun, oil can, or oil cups. With proper maintenance, these machines have been running for years.
