Collings I-30 LC - Gibson ES-330 (1960)
Messing around with my Collings I-30 from 2019 and my on-loan ES-330 from 1960.
What a difference 59 years makes. Or maybe not really?
Both played through a Strymon Iridium into Ableton Live. Same settings.

Taking a crack at Frederick Loewe's classic composition from "My Fair Lady." The guitar is a Gibson ES-330 from 1960. It belongs to some relatives of mine who were kind enough to let me keep an eye on it for a little while. Going through a Henriksen Bud as usual.
Collings City Limits vs I-35LC

This video is really for my own curiosity and self indulgence. Earlier this year, I was fortunate enough to find a used Collings City Limits for a good price. I've had my I-35 for several years now and it is no doubt one of my favorite instruments I've ever played. It's been curious to go between these two instruments these past few months. At first I though there would be a lot of overlap betw...

From the 1938 movie Romance in the Dark. It's not the pale moon that excites me That thrills and delights me, oh no It's just the nearness of you It isn't your sweet conversation That brings this sensation, oh no It's just the nearness of you When you're in my arms and I feel you so close to me All my wildest dreams come true I need no soft lights to enchant me If you'll only grant me the right...

I first heard these two tunes from a duo concert with Reinier Baas a while ago. I was struck by the melody and felt compelled to learn it. Up until this point, I had assumed the entire tune was named "First Steps, Born Again" until Jesse pointed out to me that the "intro" was in fact a separate tune entitled "Memorabilia." This tune hasn't been recorded on an album yet, but if you want to hear ...

nice use of running 3rds and 4ths however - i would use an uppre partial sharp 11th in the finishing chord just as an echo of the melody statement

the chord at the start of the second phrase with the dissonant intervals doesnt work for me as listener - somethings sounds out of key or weird in the bottom of the chord - this is just what i hear as a listener - otherwise a nice rendition

I loved the sound of the Collings, but then when you played the Gibson, I loved it even more. It sounded more like an ES-175 with P90, which is my favorite sound for clean jazz. Certainly just a subjective preference, not better-worse situation. I think it's mostly down to the size, the Collings is 15 inces lower bout, if I'm not mistaken. I'd be interested to hear their Eastside model with a P90, that would be dope! Collings seems like a great brand, I never played one, but I own a Waterloo acoustic (their somewhat cheaper subbrand of Depression era-like acoustics) and it's pretty dope.

This is so great. Emily has been and will be one of my favorites because every time I listen to it, it takes me to the time when I loved a woman I thought was meant to be with me. Actually, for some reason, we broke up, and I am not going to be able to see her ever again. Anyway, your play brought me to the happy memory of us being together. Thank you. Keep up the good work, young man!
