High Altitude STOL - Plane Lands in 65mph Wind + Surprise Award
#stol #bushplane #maule
We go to Rocky Mountain STOL in Pinedale, WY where we compete at 9000ft density altitude in my Maule M5. Massive wind storm comes in and damages planes, while a pilot lands in 65 mph winds. Plus I won a surprise award.

Yeah that GlasStar pilot also deserved some kind of award! I was 80 miles away in my S-7, coming back from near the Canadian border, on a 5 hour non stop flight, when that gust front almost got me, just 20 minutes from my strip, I got down in only 20 mph winds, got it tied down just before it got REAL windy. It was a real quick moving SOB!
welcome to the neighborhood, its a great area with great neighbors. we have one of the properties adjacent to the east of you. havent caught you out there yet, but next time you are around if we dont see you, swing by. would love to meet.

What supercharger do you have on your plane? Is it a Forced Areomotive Technologies STC? If you're not getting good climb you may want to have that looked at. I had the FAT on my Cessna 182Q it was amazing, however it did have a small problem that manifested it's self in reduced power / Climb, once that was repaired by Rod Sage our of Denver it was a rocket ship.
I can climb, but the engine gets too hot, so I have to pull the power back.
@@John_McCardle well in my experience that's pointing to something not being right. I'd have that checked out for sure.
@@HookedOnUtah It's in annual right now seeing if we can do something about it. The issue is with the turbo it makes the engine run hotter than most.
Dude your just 10 minutes from my house?
They make an extended flap arm. Would that help??
Probably, but I'm building a Bearhawk 5 that I should have done in November, so I'm not doing any upgrades to my plane.
@@John_McCardle would you do a walk around when you get it done??
Yessir! I should have a lot of content on it coming up
Dear Dilraj Bhai and Team, I am writing to bring to your attention the incredible work of Mr. Bajrang Jat from Churu, who has single-handedly built a real-size, two-seater airplane. Mr. Jat, despite leaving formal education after the 6th grade, dedicated eight years and significant personal investment (approximately 15 lakh rupees, including a bank loan and support from friends) to his passion for aviation. This dedication culminated in the creation of this impressive aircraft. His accomplishment has already garnered media attention, as evidenced by this UA-cam video:ua-cam.com/video/B3oVtIlgw6s/v-deo.htmlsi=YUBuLhrOrkrXaBg7 We believe Mr. Jat's story and achievement hold immense potential to inspire and motivate others. We kindly request your support in helping him take the next step: testing and flying his creation. Currently, Mr. Jat works at the CCL MPCOST Science Center in Bhopal. We firmly believe that collaborating with him could contribute significantly to the advancement of scientific and technological pursuits in India. Furthermore, your involvement could not only provide valuable guidance and resources to Mr. Jat but also serve as an inspiration to countless individuals across the country, demonstrating the power of dedication and perseverance in achieving one's dreams. We would be honored to connect you directly with Mr. Jat to discuss his story and explore potential collaboration opportunities. You can reach him at 9461797942, and I am also available at 9602141444. We eagerly await your positive response and look forward to exploring how we can work together to support Mr. Jat and his remarkable invention. Thank you for your time and consideration. Sincerely, Pankaj Godara Program coordinator Centre for creative learning Bhopal
Love this! Congratulations!
Awesome video
Oh my God that was the worst music ever. Unbelievably annoying that's for sure
BEARHAWK for the Win!!!!
Great video! You planning on selling the maule when the bearhawk is finished?
Yes I am. You looking for one?
@@John_McCardle depends on timing…
Likely be around November
Fellow 5 builder here. Keep the vids coming man!
Great content. Maule guy myself and considering a bearhawk in the future too.
So awesome to see you taking part in the builder assist program. What a great opportunity, thanks for sharing!
Heck yeah. Another great video. Can't wait to see that Bearhawk finished.
Congrats! I was there on Sat, and got your channel name from the side of your aircraft.
Good to know people actually pay attention to that stuff, LOL
I love watching these contests!.... QUESTION: Do these planes have reversible pitch props to help them stop?
There are a couple Huskies that do, but they land so quickly it normally doesn't kick on in time to help them stop.
Precision technique, inspiring. In the simulator, landing a taildragger and hitting the brakes too hard can easily wheel barrow forward and tip the prop into the ground. How do they set up the brakes?
Brakes aren't set up any differently. You just need to be sure not to hit them so hard you nose over.
No need to mention it’s a turbo at this altitude. Perhaps they should hold this competition in Leadville.
You'd be surprised ;)
What do you get for cruise speed on your maule?
Usually 120 knots, can get it up to 125
Yea, 30+headwind.
Round 20
B. E. A. UTIFUL PLANE!!!!
Cool content! Looks like 19
Years ago a friend that I worked for in a glider ride business and I would have a short field landing contest at the end of the day in an old Franklin M4. We started out doing it with both of us in the airplane,,, that didn't last long. We then went one at a time. It was for who was buying drinks and supper that night. We got pretty good at it. One evening we just went straight to the die-down. Nothing really needed to be said, We both knew we were getting close to doing some damage to the airplane.
Ive been trying to make liver palatable for the last 5 years. Next deer i get ill give your recipe a go!
Looking like a pro!
Not to be an ass, but 300 hours seems pretty low to be competing in this type of format when most pilots are thinking speed is life. Best of luck in your competition and stay safe sir. BTW, cool video and beautiful tail dragger.
I’m a similar hour pilot, very little TW time so, full disclosure, I’m not qualified to comment here, but here goes.. As far as drag goes your “fan” effect has no justification. In fact negative. If you were actually pitching about a fixed axis, and therefore relying only on inertia in rotation, then I agree entirely.. but seeing as the lift created by the wings is based on airspeed/angle of attack, you can’t pitch about this axis until it’s flying. Therefore your nosedive just before rotation is adding nothing but drag..🤷🏻♂️ I’m sure someone with more experience can explain/disprove what I’m trying to articulate far more efficiently..? Either way, I’ve enjoyed the thought process thus far! (Great vid!)
Maybe, but I feel like with the flaps down you are trapping air under the wing as you pull the tail down, which should give you an extra pop off the ground in addition to the aoa/speed. I've tried to both ways and this way seems to produce the best results and so far I've had the best takeoff in the last 2 competitions.
Good luck in Louisiana @ Swamp Stol!!
The Turbo M5 is a great performer
Let me show you how I got into the Maule 235 in those days if I was out there
Cool video shocked to hear Nebraska weather I was just looking around and this was the first video I watched about being a pilot cool stuff Live near Omaha too
Not joking, I'd eat that in ONE BITE. god damn!
I was really liking your stuff.....until.....all the F-bombs..... Stay classy San Diego!
I have two aircraft Kitfox SS7 and RV 14A and have Elk hunted 25 times. Always wanted to use my plane for hunting but needed to much gear. Based out of KFZY. It would be nice to hunt together some day with our aircraft. Where are you based out of. Tom
My mission from the start was using my plane to hunt, everything else is just gravy! I'm out of Omaha, NE. Where do you elk hunt?
Mostly Colorado but I am going to Wyoming this year unit 117 if I get drawn
very cool .
what engine?

Nice! It is good to see maules being flown well in Competition. Keep at it.
i love this video but bgm is too loud for me
Thank you so much for sharing! Especially the issue you had with the mound. Looking good for a first timer. I will soon have my Bearhawk finished and will be joining in on the fun! (also a first timer to off airport ops) I am following your journey for sure.
What Bearhawk are you building? I will be having a BH5 built in 2025.
