Into the Wild is a 2007 film directed by Sean Penn, based on the best-seller of the same name by Jon Krauker. The protagonist of the story is Christopher McCandless (Emile Hirsch), a young and wealthy university student who makes an unconventional decision: to leave his studies to escape the corrupt and consumerist society.
Complicating his relationship with reality is the twisted bond with his family and the ideas suggested by the heterodox works of London and Thoreau.
After asking his parents to donate his university funds to a non-profit organization, Christopher sets out with a backpack across America, under the pseudonym Alexander Supertramp. His journey will be punctuated by various encounters that will fuel his ideal of freedom and give shape to his thoughts on the world.
After meeting the hippie couple, Jan and Rainey, Christopher spends time in the pay of the thresher Wayne Westerberg (Vince Vaughn) from whom he learns fundamental information for his trip to Alaska. Christopher will also confront the singer-songwriter Tracy (Kristen Stuart) and the grumpy veteran (Hal Holbrook), preparing as best he can for his adventure in the wilderness.
Having arrived in the endless lands, far from any human contact, Christopher builds his new life around an old abandoned bus. The harshness of the earth, however, will lead him to make a fatal mistake. Isolated from the world, the young man finally comes to conceive his personal thoughts on life and happiness, contained in the phrase "Happiness is authentic only if shared".
